Gotham The Official Gotham News and discussion thread - Part 1

I just watched the trailer and it seems too pretentious to me and the acting seems quite bad and ott (apart from Jim Gordon, his casting and character seems just fine).
Hopefully I'm not the only one who thinks this way.

Arkham is nailed to a tee from the gate alone but I agree the acting is something corny and leaves alot to be desired.

Arkham does indeed look great but I don't understand why a lot of villains are being introduced so early on. I'm okay with Cobblepot being in the show now and his age is justifiable but Scarecrow and Zsasz shouldn't be around.

Shoving references down our throats to that many classic villain characters just to assure fan/brand recognition is bound to harm the final product... Specially if we keep getting so many characters introduced this early on, it contradicts the mythos and forces them to rush Batman (the show oozes of their wish for the caped crusader to be ready to star)...

This seems to be this show's Achilles' heel so far, which could kill it early if they are not careful.

It seems like in every Gotham corner there's a younger version of a known villain waiting to pop out at the camera right now and that's almost annoyingly breaking the fourth wall for me...

Exactly. Can't they just create their own characters and antagonists for the show and have the odd "young" Batman villain when it's appropriate?

E.g. have the Waynes' killer as the "antagonist" for season 1 and maybe the mob too. Throw in Cobbleplot towards the end of season 1 and set him up to be a threat in season 2. After Cobbleplot's been resolved, have an original antagonist for a while and then introduce another Batman villain towards the end of season 2 or start of season 3.

They can't keep throwing out these names and classic Batman villains out there already.

I understand that a pilot has different needs and it seems obvious that one of those needs for this show was to hammer home the fact that this is "a prequel in Batman's universe" (which for good or for worse, they successfully did).

It's just the way they did it that seems tasteless. It felt like a comedian telling a joke and, right after the punchline, he stops you and explains the joke to you. This comic is a nice illustration to this point.

As a comic reader, I don't mind references and name-dropping here and there. It's just the on the nose, almost-turn-to-the-camera-and-wink, way that bothers me. I don't know if this would bother me if I didn't actually know the comics but it feels like they're aiming at the Batman unsavvy crowd and handholding them instead of dropping a few seeds and let them follow the trail on their own...

Of course, this might be premature reasoning since, like I said, it's only the pilot. But a preview of the season showing that much roster already waiting to appear makes me a bit apprehensive...

Just saw the trailer for this season. My god that looked horrible. The acting looks really corny. So Zsasz and Scarecrow are now in this? And they look and sound terrible too.

Now im not even sure if ill continue watching. Maybe the curiosity will get the best of me...well...probably. But goddamn.

Don't let it. Just give it up now.

Please.

I watched that trailer, where did Scarecrow show up?
I missed it .

'That kid never misses, he is a dead shot with a Nerf Gun' *wink*

'That kid makes me nervous, always trying on all those hats. I think he's mad' *wink*

'That kid Bruce plays with never goes anywhere without that darn coin of his, and when I confront him he is a two faced liar' *wink*

You only have to wait 10 years to see the adult versions.

You're super clever.

I guess most people believe Batman created the rogues. That his presence made them escalate their antics. This is going in the other direction of Gotham being so bad that it needed a savior.

I'm guessing that the overload of characters is partly in reaction to the first half of AOS. Producers of tv channels never get it right. If something goes right, they want their new show to double it. Same if there is criticism of a show they go too far the other way.

Get the first few episodes out of the way, it will balance itself out.

Actually,Scarecrow is one of the few that I always figured to be a good decade older than Bruce.

I wonder if they'll do the Holiday killer? That could be a good arc, he can show up for every holiday special.

I had a lot of problems with what Heller's Gotham was presenting on TV. If Heller continues writing, I don't think I'm going to like the show. He's been terrible with story elements and mystery in The Mentalist.

Sounds like you were dissatisfied withe the Red John reveal .

I don't care about all the b****ing I heard from people after the pilot, I'm loving what I'm seeing of this Alfred.
yeah so am i. this alfred is honestly shaping up to be my favorite Alfred ever.

The problem for studios is when they look at a show like AOS and see the fans railing against it for not using comic characters, what are they going to think?

And can you really say it's just for recognition? It's not like Zsaaz is a name recognized by the general audience.

I agree that Scarecrow is definitely a villain I'd presume to be at least ten years older than Bruce. Riddler as well.

And I also would like to see the Holiday Killer. Though seeing Long Halloween in an actual Batman show would be ideal, this may be the closest we get.

And lastly, I agree with the other saying that Arkham looks perfect. Hands down.

I actually wouldn't mind seeing Hush/Tommy show up.

If Bruce is going to stay in the show then he needs his storyline to be about something besides Batman. Having another kid to bounce off of would be good show his state-of-mind about other stuff.

Leslie Tompkins would be an excellent character to show up as well but not connected to Bruce so much as Alfred or Bullock.
