Pretty much everything about that Venom annoyed me.

Topher was physically all wrong to play 616 Eddie Brock. That's where the complaining about him comes from. His acting was fine with the little material he had to work with.

They were going for a Mix-Mash of Ultimate Eddie and 616

Appearance-wise, it was Ultimate Brock

Here's MJ's best scene in the trilogy:

:awesome:

Wasn't TAS version essentially 616 Eddie?

Not quite. 616 Eddie Brock was a reporter at the Daily Globe, were SM:TAS Eddie Brock is a rival photographer at the Daily Bugle, similar to Lance Bannon in the 616 comics, which leads me to believe he is a composite of Eddie Brock and Lance Bannon. SM:TAS Eddie Brock is Peter's workplace rival, while 616 Eddie Brock is a complete stranger to Peter Parker prior to becoming Venom.

I got to be honest I loved SM3's Venom. I was never a Venom fan untill I saw SM3. I liked the idea of Venom as an Anti Spider Man. He should be as big as Spidey and as lean as he is. The old Venom alwas looked like a Steroid monster who's tounge made him look like he belonged on a KISS album cover. (thats not to say I don't like the comic Venom though, I love him.)

I liked that Venom was muscular in the comics, because with Spider-Man, his opposite being much stronger than him is completely justified, if you think about it. It's a nice bit of Fridge Brilliance. Think about who Peter was before he received his powers: A skinny nerd, a weakling. It makes perfect sense that his opposite would be a strong, muscular man like Eddie is in the comics.

I definitely agree about Venom's look in the comics. My preference for Venom is the simple, inhuman grin of sharp teeth, like he was drawn by Todd McFarlane.

I'm not a fan of the tongue, drool, and jacked up teeth, like the Erik Larsen version. I just have a hard time taking it seriously.

That looks like a parody of Venom to me.

^^ Agreed. I mean , I LOVE Erik Larsen's art, but I don't like when the drool is over done.

He draws most of the characters fine, but his Venom is downright insulting. He didn't add the tongue and the drool because he thought that it looked good, or he thought it fit the character, it's there out of spite because he hates Venom and doesn't want to draw him. Ugh. I just have a hard time respecting that.

The tongue and the drool never made sense to me when I thought about it. Why is Eddie forming a tongue and gallons of drool?

You remember when everyone was talking about Venom being in Spider-Man 3, and what he should look like and so forth? There was even debate whether or not he should have the symbol, with a few people, including Chris Wallace, saying he shouldn't wear the symbol.

I say no symbol. If I really hate somebody I'm not gonna wear their symbol on my chest.

Venom should look like the eric larsen version only WITHOUT the symbol....I want him to be a scary MONSTER not just a dude in a costume....I want to be afraid of venom and I want to think "whoa, spidey might not get out of this one" when i'm watching it. For once, I want a scary bad guy, not a cheesy rehash of all the other bad guys who have a "master plan" in every other comic. All Venom should be is a monster obsessed with ripping spiderman apart. No symbol, no cheesy "I want to eat your brain" lines, just a pure animailistic killing machine!! SCARE ME RAIMI!!

Weird times, huh?

Speaking of Venom's look in S-M3, I thought it was perfect.

While not quite perfect, Venom is done pretty well. I definitely appreciate the more restrained design. I love the symbol they actually used in the film, and I wish that Spider-Man wore it on the symbiote costume. Indeed, of the two, I found the film's incarnation of the black costume more disappointing. They put an assload of work into making the symbiote costume look different from the red & blue costume, but changing the symbiote costume like the red-and-blue costume hides these differences, instead of bringing them out and emphasizing them.

I have a hard believing that couldn't be translated to the screen. Use the same emblem as they did on Venom, with the same texture and eye shape (but without the black rims), and perhaps black, subtle webbing, if any at all, and there you go. A great translation of the black costume for the film.

But no. We got this instead.

What the hell? If you're going to change the symbol, make it a wraparound symbol. I guess the new black costume symbol was for images like this:

Kudos dude I never thought of it that way! That does work. I do like the tongue, but sometimes its WAYYYYYYY too much.

Thing is, in the context of the movie... it doesn't really make to much sense to have his suit's symbol go from this
spiderman-3-suit-symbol.jpg
to this.

Along with having the raised webbing and texture of his suit disappear just because a black substance covered it.

Which is why it bothered me when Venom was able to get the wrap around symbol.

Venom's suit (in Spider-Man 3) was based on Spider-Man's. The symbiote was able to mimic a distorted version of Spider-Man's suit design, but it decided to give him a completely new suit symbol? lolwut

In the comics, Spidey's symbiote suit had a wrap around symbol because he was thinking about Spider-Woman's costume when the symbiote covered him, but they can't really do that in a movie without having it...y'know, not make sense.

Unless it formed a new one to mock him or something. :S

Believe me, I was disappointed too when I realized the symbiote suit was just going to be a palette swap of the regular suit.

I never had a problem with the symbiote suit in S-M3 and the main reason is because it makes more sense (in the film universe) for the Symbiote suit not to change the spider into the the wrap around one that is so famous.

Exactly.

I liked it, but I was disappointed at first when I realized (when we got the first image of black suit Spidey) that that was going to be his symbiote suit.

But it made sense, so I liked it. :)

Thanks! I'm happy to give insight to those who seek it.

In the comics, the symbiote has the ability to shapeshift, and it patterns its appearance based on the will of the host.
This is why Venom looks like this:

Carnage looks like this:

And Hybrid looks like this:

Thus, shifting into a new Spider-Man costume should be easy.

Why change the symbol at all if you're not going to use the wraparound one?
