^^ Definitely! I thought he was great.
The only complaints I had about Topher Grace weren't really his fault. The pealing back of the symbiote to show his own face, the goofy one liners and some of his dialogue were cheesy, not calling himself "we,"...but I can blame the writers and even Sam for some of that.
I think Topher was good as Eddie, but I would
have loved to have seen what he could've done with better script and dialogue.
Tbh, I thoguht Topher was a great choice because they wanted Brock to be Peter's doppleganger. I really liked what they were going for.![]()
I never thought of that before, but I can definitely see what you mean.Is it just me or does Spider-Man 3's Venom seem to be a composite character of Eddie Brock and Lance Bannon?
I never thought of that before, but I can definitely see what you mean.
^^ Could be. I always thought of it as a combination of 616, Ultiamte, and some new ideas.
Indeed. He's a combination of most of those incarnations.
For what he was given, he did well. Would I have liked him to be a bit bulkier? Yes. Does it make or break the performance? Hell no.
The major complaints are few, such as Venom peeling his face back constantly during the climax. Topher Grace's voice and his face isn't really that menacing, which is fine with Eddie Brock, but menace is necessary when he's Venom. He's meant to be the ultimate challenge to Spider-Man. He should be scary.
He also comes off as a little too delusional in the film, such as believing Gwen is his girlfriend after having a cup of coffee with her, and not believing he needs any sort of forgiveness to the point of asking God to kill Peter Parker. Brock is a Roman Catholic, not an ancient Roman. Granted, in the original comics, Brock is delusional, blaming Spider-Man for what were clearly his own actions, but he didn't go as far as to ask God to kill Spider-Man.
If they would've cut out Sandman, fleshed out Brock more and really made him Parker's opposite, it would've been amazing. Have Brock be confident, well dressed, good with the ladies, etc...everything that Parker isn't...on the surface that is. Although Brock would have a strong exterior, his interior would be weak and the opposite for Parker. Topher Grace as a snide, "Talented Mr. Ripley" would've made the character interesting and fascinating, improving 100% on the comic book version. It doesn't even matter that he wasn't "bulky" like an exaggerated comic book drawing if the character was that improved and that much more interesting.
Topher was physically all wrong to play 616 Eddie Brock. That's where the complaining about him comes from. His acting was fine with the little material he had to work with.
