Anyone else want to see more wisecracks in the reboot? I mean, it doesn't ruin the film for me, but I loved that "smart ass superhero" aspect in the Spider-Man comics.
Yes I do. It's one of the things I like best about Spider-Man. The Raimi films were great without them, but it's good to know that he will tell jokes in this one.

Godzilla, I can take or leave a lot of wisecracks, tbh. I loved them in the comics, but film is different and it may take away from the tension of the fight scenes. That's why I had no problem with the amount of wisecracks we got in Riami's films. Could more work? we'll just have to wait and see.
I'm sure there won't be any wisecracks during the more serious fight scenes.

One thing I don't get about this whole defence against wisecracks is, why would he wisecrack in the movie when somebody's about to die, when he would never/has never done that in the comics?

Did he wisecrack when Gwen Stacy died? Nope. So why would he do that in a movie? :S

Agreed. Like I said in my above post, I'm sure he won't quip when it's not appropriate.

Exactly.

I remember that. I liked that because, let's face it...Venom is one scary looking creature! Who wouldn't be creeped out facing off against him??!!

I'd say that Venom (Eddie Brock, the original Venom) is one of Spider-Man's most dangerous and most menacing foes, on par with Norman Osborn in that regard.

^^ I think Venom is one of Spidey's greatest foes, but not on par with Norman or Doc Ock.

I was primarily talking about in terms of his menace and threat level (to Peter Parker). Overall, I think he deserves his place in the "Big Three" of Spider-Man (at least when he's written at his best).

^^ I think so as well, but he stalked Peter and knew so much about him which added to his threat level to Peter. But in terms of long terms, he never really had a massive impact on Peter's life for years to come like Norman or Ock did. However, he still is one of SPidey's greatest foes.

True, he doesn't have the long-term impact on Peter's life that Norman Osborn does, but he is great at putting Spider-Man through hell. Venom's is just about the only villain who even approaches Green Goblin's impact on Peter. What Venom lacks in making a long-term impact on Peter's life, he makes up for in danger level. He knows Peter even better than Norman, he's perfectly equipped to stalk, surprise, and ambush Peter, and he's more physically powerful than Green Goblin.

^^ That's very true, but I think something such as the death of Gwen Stacy, which weighs on Peter ofr years and years aftwards has more of an affect on Peter psychologically than fighting Venom. However, Venom, as you said, he can stalk and ambush Peter without him even knowing.

Good point about the death of Gwen Stacy. Overall, I would say that they both can make Peter's life hell, but their methods are different. Norman makes Peter suffer in the long term, because he's a patient, methodical mastermind. Venom makes life difficult in the short term, but he can really keep Peter on edge as he plays cat-and-mouse with him. Where Norman endangers Peter's family and friends, Venom makes Peter fear for his own safety, just by being out there.

Venom has done nothing to earn himself the status as one of Spidey's deadliest villains. He knows Spidey's identity and what has he done with that info? Nothing. He's never killed or seriously hurt anyone close to Spidey. At this stage he's nothing but a joke. So what use is him knowing who Peter is? At least when Norman found out he did something with the information.

Doc Ock doesn't know who Spidey really is and he's wrecked Peter's life way more than Venom ever has.

I'll admit, Eddie Brock as Venom has lost a lot of his menace over the years, and he's never killed or seriously injured anyone close to Peter Parker, but in his initial appearances, he was a ferocious badass who could cause Peter to fear for his own safety just by the sheer possibility he was coming after him. Sure, this only lasts until his defeat, but, more than any other villain, he can make Peter fear for his own personal safety. Even his Spider-Sense cannot warn Peter of Venom's attack. When Venom is at play, Peter cannot let his guard down, because Venom's perfectly equipped for a surprise attack.

Green Goblin goes after Peter's friends and family. Venom goes after Peter himself.

^^ Good point! Though, Green Goblin did take away Spider-Man's spider-sense for a little while. Still, your point stands.

Green Goblin needed a gas to do it. Venom, on the other hand, evades the Spider-Sense automatically. Plus, Green Goblin doesn't have a camouflage ability. Venom does. Green Goblin is better at tormenting Peter by targeting his family and friends to make him suffer. Venom torments Peter by keeping him on edge until he becomes a nervous wreck.

The 90's show was a great example of this.

I hope if they introduce Venom, it's not a 1 movie thing. I want to see Venom stalk Peter a little, and make him paranoid as hell.

Which is what makes them both fantastic. In the comics and in TAS, Brock goes to Aunt May's home and has his arm around Aunt MAy. It grinds Peter up inside so much. Funny thing is that Brock's hand is symbiote covered, so Peter couldn't lift it.

Agreed. As I said in the Amazing Spider-Man Sequel Villains thread Venom works best as a cat-and-mouse thriller villain who puts Spider-Man on the defensive. Venom is a predator, and Spider-Man is his prey.

Venom could make a great antagonist for a film for his sheer ability to create tension alone, such as in scenes like that. He's not a criminal running from Spider-Man, he is a predator playing with his food.

Like I said, that's one of my favorite traits about Venom and one of the things that makes him one of my favorites. Speaking of Eddie Brock, back in 2007 (before all the ANti-Veom stuff which I really enjoy), there was a story in The Sensation SPider-Man where Brock is in the hospital and he literally cuts himself thinking that he's freeing the symbiote. It's a fantastic loook into Brock's mind at the time.
It's really a look inside Borck's state of mind back before Anti-Venom.

Here's 2 random panels from the issue. These are not next to eachother in the story, just random panels as I said.

I love this. The whole Back in Black arc, along with the What if? Back in Black issue. :hrt:

I remember that story. I think it's a shame how Venom the predator got lost over the years, in lieu of Venom the Lethal Protector and Venom the brain eater. To me, eating brains or being an anti-hero/teaming up with Spider-Man to fight Carnage wasn't what made Venom cool, it was his ability to get Spider-Man on edge and keep him there. Spider-Man couldn't sleep very well at night if Venom isn't locked up.

Aguirre-Sacasa, one of the better writers pre-OMD

I was really hoping that Marvel was going to bring Venom I (Eddie Brock) back to tie into Spider-Man 3. It's a shame because there's a hole in the rogues gallery where Venom used to be. Oh well.
