still rooting for daniel craig

big name
handsome
rough and tough looking
deep voice
very suave, debonair and has a classiness about him

cant be bond without classiness

Yes, but I do believe he is crazy… I still vividly remember his call to 911 when his brother died. Plus, the Phoenix family is very strange in general.
Valid points. I guess "normal" is a relative term, lol.

As for the nationality debate, I'm American and can think of very few prominent actors I'd find as well-suited for Lex as these Brits and Aussies being discussed.

Don't get me wrong, I love all the mentions. I particularly feel Mark Strong would be great. He's debonair and grimey....

For me, I just feel like American actors (especially males) are always shafted when it comes to who is mentioned as "good" actors. Yet, there are some very good American actors with the same range as some of the British/Euro actors being discussed. However, the American actors have not been given the opportunity because American films are different. That doesn't mean they don't have the range. That's like saying Chinese actors can't act in anything except action, IMO

edit: not saying you're sayiing that...but I do feel some male American actors get the shaft in some regards.

thing with american actors of today compared to british/aussies is their looks

guys like franco,JGL,gyllenhaal, hammer, or even guys like reynolds and gosling who are canadian but raised here just tend to be more of the soft side when it comes to looks

but when you look at guys like cavill, fassbender, hardy, hemsworth they just have this natural mature toughness about them

Oh, James Franco as Lex Luthor... could work. :hmm

:o

IMO, those are the guys who Lex should look like. When have you ever seen a rugged looking Lex Luthor?

edit:

Luthor is a name not just for kicks.

True, but it doesn't automatically make them right for Lex Luthor, either. Literally the only American who instantly comes to mind for me who projects the necessary combo of suave charm and darkness I'd want to see from Lex is Jon Hamm, and he eliminated himself by playing a parody of Lex for Funny or Die. I WOULD agree with Timothy Olyphant because I love him, but his stint as a terrible villain in Die Hard pretty much kicked him off the "potential Lex Luthor" list for me.

What Americans other than Hammer would you like to see in the role?

One that I think COULD be good is Patrick Wilson. But he's pretty much my top pick for The Flash, so that's the role I'd rather see him in. I'm also not opposed to Phoenix, though he's not a top pick, either.

Also, I disagree that Lex should look so boyish as Gosling, Gyllenhaal, Reynolds, etc. He's always looked like an intimidating MAN to me. Not a man-boy like those guys.

LOL...was he in that???? I watched like five minutes of that movie and turned it off. I excluded it from the McCLane saga like I did Die Hard 2.

I love Olymphant from A Perfect Getway.

That's difficult. Though I do like Wilson, even though he has a good boy persona. The difficulty is finding an American actor who is generally agreed upon as a good actor. There are not many I can recall...unfortnuately. Yet, I do NOT think extreme acting is needed from Lex in a movie, IMO. The role could be filled by someone like Balthazar Getty, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, or strangely...Emile Hirsch.

I didn't say boyish, but I do agree he should be polished and not rugged. None of actors you mentioned look particularly boyish to me. They did...at some point, but they've all aged. I'm not saying any of them are right for Luthor, but my point again is there has to be SOME AMERICAN actors worthy of SHH's consideration. :word:

those 2 qualities usually work well together lol

easier to look menacing if you look a bit tough looking

I don't think Lex should look like a polished pretty boy at all.

He comes from a rough past. He didn't get his power handed down to him by his daddy while he messed about at some preppy school.

Yes, he should be well groomed, well dressed, and have perfected the charming smile that hides his true nature. But he should never look too 'soft'.

Depends on what incarnation of Lex you are/have been reading. I prefer 80s and 90s Lex the most. He was RUTHLESS!

lex should be the opposite of the other suit wearing bald man xavier who is a gentle and nice looking man:oldrazz:

lol....Again, depending on the incarnation you are reading. IMO, and in my lexicon, Lex became a true villian because of his ULTIMATE HATE for Superman. Nothing else. He would have a been a savior if didn't hate Superman so much. For me, that's all that's really needed for Lex Luthor. Someone who can be convincingly HATEFUL and HATE-FILLED.

So do I. In fact, I've loved him in everything I've seen him in...except the one time I saw him play a villain, so maybe I just like him playing good-guys-with-an-edge.

Hmmm...the only one of those picks I might like would be Getty. I'm not a fan of JDM, but I do like Emile Hirsch...just not for Lex.

They all still look pretty boyish to me (and their voices don't help), but to each her own. :yay:

I actually forgot that one of my favorites for the role is American...or at least American-raised: Oscar Isaac. I think he's a really underrated talent who's about to become much more well-known, being the lead in the next Coen Brothers flick. Not only was a he a standout in Agora and Balibo and made the most of an under-written villain role in Robin Hood, but he also gave the strongest performance in Snyder's Sucker Punch, imo. I think he's definitely one to watch, and has a decent look for the role:

Don't forget Drive. He brought a lot to a role that's sort of underwritten and really makes it his own.

I've already thrown him out there for Batman, but I think he might be better suited for Luthor: Nikolaj Coster Waldau

I forgot about their voices...lol....but if Bale can put on the Batman voice then everyone else should be able to improvise with their own...lol

Interesting choice....I am not familiar with him. Sucker Punch is another movie I never made it through.
