It certainly does sound like something happened to the drive over the weekend. Probably just failed due to wear and tear (or somebody dropped it and tried to cover it up ;)).

Since the drive is showing up as unknown (and is presumably making normal drive sounds when something tries to access it), I wonder if the data is good, but the file allocation table was lost. Basically, everything would still be on the drive, but that data that tells the computer how to read the drive is corrupted.

I know a couple of programs for the PC that can read a drive like this so you can recover data. I'm sure there's probably some Mac programs that can do it too.

Thanks for the input. I was kind of thinking along those lines. Hopefully our tech guy can get the info off of it tomorrow or the near future. It's a lot of backed up files that have gone and of course this place is so cheap we have no other space to back up files too.

I'll have to see what the guy says tomorrow was hoping there might be something I missed. But C'est la Vie.

I downloaded a movie from Tysiphonehelp.com and am having trouble playing it on my ipod touch (2g). Ive used that website before and have had no trouble. With this one i can get it on the computer and it plays fine in itunes. however when trying to put it into my ipod touch it says this movie can not be played on the ipod. i right clicked the title and clicked create ipod/iphone version. after it converted it was able to be moved into my ipod but there is only audio. i just see a white screen but hear everything. anyone know what is wrong?

I can't get my xbox to work, guessing it's too do with my firewall settings? Thing is, what kinda of setting should the firewall be at, to low security?

Sounds like the original file was converted either improperly, or to the wrong iPod format. Not every format is compatible with all video iPod/iPhones.

You might have some luck with an independent converter like Videora.

How are you trying to connect your xbox to the internet? Not sure how a Mac would be involved.

For all iPhone/iPod Touch owners:

The new 3.0 OS has finally been released. You can download and install the update from iTunes.

Note, if you have jailbroken your phone, you will not want to install the update for risk of losing your jailbreak.

Why in the hell does iTunes extract my audio CD's in WAV format only to make it larger than it was on the CD so then I can not burn it back onto a blank CD?

Try changing the import settings in your iTunes preferences.

I did there really aren't many options when choosing WAV encoder format.

Right Click and hit "Create AAC Version" and try burning the AAC Version. It might work.

Then don't use WAV as your encoder. That's a filetype used for lossless audio files (i.e. uncompressed and large audio), which I'm assuming you don't want since you plan to burn it to a CD.

Use MP3 as your encoder instead.

Quick question on browsers, though it's not specifically related to the Mac. I'm currently using Safari 4, and while great, there's this one issue I have with how it utilizes the vbcode. When inserting an image url using the 'Insert Image' button, I get this:

Same method as above, but with Firefox:

The latter is what I'd prefer for obvious reasons. FF also has the added caveat of just right-clicking 'copy image' and pasting straight into the reply box without having to go through any extra steps. Is this a result of different browser frameworks? I'd like to know if I can alter Safari 4 to behave this way.

The reason you can just paste an 'image' is the button in the upper right corner of your Firefox example. It lets you switch from text view to rendered view.

Neither Safari or Chrome currently support that option on they Hype as far as I've found. You may want to ask in the general tech support threads. One of the admins might know for sure.

AGH! NO! I want these in WAV to be lossless. If you need the whole story, I burned CDs for a friend. Those exact same CDs I burned were stolen from me. I remembered he had them, so I borrowed them so I could burn them and get them back.

Hence why I want them in full WAV format.

My problem is....when I extract them as WAV files a lot of the CDs are ending up being 700+ MB, so I can not burn them to a CD. Should I just use a different program for this?

It's likely you burned your friend's CD at a compressed (non-lossless) format, probably MP3, which is why it fit on his disc. And when you tried to decode in lossless, it's bigger than the actual CD-R. Note that for many music CD's, ripping in lossless should produce a high file size. 700+ MB sounds right.

If this is the case, you're doing it wrong. Whatever encoder and bitrate you burned for him, you should use those exact settings when extracting. Going lossless or higher than his settings is a complete waste of space, as you can't add to something that is not there. Just because you choose WAV or another lossless encoder, does not mean you're going to get uncompressed audio from any source. The source itself has to be uncompresed as well. Otherwise, as I said it's a big waste of time.

Anyone here have MobileMe? Just signed up for a free trial and I'm not sure if I have a technical issue or not. Push mail works great, but there seems to be a delay or non-updates with my iPhone and OSX Mail app. Any changes I make within my iPhone seem to update relatively quickly on my laptop, but vice versa it doesn't seem to work.

For example, from my laptop, if I make a new mailbox and move 2 recently read messages into it, the changes don't appear on my iPhone until I open up the mail application (where it updates). On my iPhone's main page, the badge still says I have 2 unread messages.

Aren't the push servers supposed to work without opening anything?

Check your phone's mail settings. Even if push is turned on, it's possible that the fetch schedule is set to manual. Which means it'll only update when you load the app. Good for saving the battey, not so much for instant updating.

I think you can set the mail app to update every 15 minutes.

I've done all that already, everything on my phone's settings seems to be fine. Like I said, by itself, the push updates work almost instantaneously with the phone. It's when I make changes across other devices that the mail doesn't seem to carry across until I open the actual app.

I think it's the actual push servers, unfortunately. I was just sent a confirmation email from Amazon about an order I just made. As expected, it showed on my iPhone immediately. But on my OSX Mail app....nada. I waited a few minutes, still nothing. Then I quit, restarted the app, and magically the new mail is there.

*sigh*

I'm actually disappointed with this. Contacts, Bookmarks, Calendars, all work great with communicating across my phone and laptop. But Mail seems to be the issue, and unfortunately that's the most important aspect for me.

P.S. On an unrelated note, how do I "archive" mail with the OSX Mail app? I like to keep my messages in separate mailboxes (mobileme, orders, confirmations, friends, etc.) but there are some messages that don't fit into any particular category. I don't want to leave them in my inbox, I'd rather just hide them, similar to Gmail, so they only show up if I click "all mail" or search for a term. Is there a similar feature?

I'm not sure if there's a 'hide' feature. The easiest thing is just to create an 'archive' folder and throw everything into it that you want to hide.

There a way to get back the "Me" identity card in Address Book? I remember deleting it a long while back, but I want to restore it if possible. Turns out I have quite a few uses for it.

Not much? Yes I know you said WAV but who converts to WAV unless you have the source material. I can't tell a great deal of difference between a high bitrate MP3 and WAV. Maybe a little more difference with AAC and MP3. It's a little more clearer and crisp but it's minuscule.

Indeed. Only as good as the source.

What on earth is wrong with this site. It never responds in a timely manner. Stuck in limbo most times, even editing a post it's cycling and cycling and cycling till it eventually responds.

You won't hear much (if any) difference with low-end speakers. Be it the laptop, desktop stock speakers, cheap headphones, etc etc.

You have some quality (expensive) headsets though and you'll almost hear an entire new set of sounds you never knew were there, on the lossless format. Especially on higher volumes.

If you're posting late at night, around 2-3 AM EST, you'll get slowdowns.
