The Official Punisher by Rick Remender / Punisher MAX thread

Hmm if shadowland is any implication, Franks status in the marvel universe is about to change again. Or it could that punisher who appears in shadowland isn't actually the real one. Of course no one actually seemed surprised at how alive he was.

Thats because Frankencastle is already being retconned, THANK GOD !!!!

And The Punisher had a great return in Shadowland 3, let's hope Frank does not have the same arc that he had in Civil War ........

Oh and I would say that the Ennis MAX Punisher run is the Punisher Bible its the standard by which all other Punisher stories are judged against,

Its one of the best runs on any comic character, BORN to me is a favorite , but really The Punisher MAX stories read in this order:

Born

Tyger

The Cell

In the begining

Kitchen Irish

Mother Russia

Up is down and black is White

Slavers

Barracuda

Man of Stone

Widow Maker

Long cold dark

Valley Forge

The End

and you have one of the greatest runs ,

and after that you need more, start reading Jason Aarons current Punisher MAX arcs up to issue 9, it comes really close to being as good....

Frankencastle is not being retconned, the Punisher is simply getting his status quo rightfully restored. There was no way Frankencastle was ever going to be permanent (though I do think that Marvel expected it to last a bit longer).

Remender said he had it plotted out for at least 2 years from the start. I was hoping for more Legion of Monsters and Monster Metropolis stuff.......a shame.

****ING MONSTERS DON'T REALLY FIT !!!!!

But hey ! Each too their own ? Lol

Yes I was. I liked Franken-Castle (an all of Remender's run before that) because, let's face it, The Punisher lives in the Marvel Universe that's filled with Sorcerer Supreme's, Thunder Gods, Green Goblin's, ect. I liked that he traded M-16's and Sniper Rifles for SHIELD laser guns and Pym Particles to go after Osborn. I like the fact that other aspects from the Marvel Universe like Werewolf by Night, Manphibian and the Bloodstone were brought into the fold.

If you want to see Frank kill Mobster-A or Drug dealer-B like he has for the past 40yrs, you can get that and a whole lot more in Punisher MAX. It's even better than the 616 Punisher because it takes full advantage of the violence inside of Frank's world. I think it's the same reason why most people will (in time) prefer Deadpool MAX over 616 Deadpool......(not to mention the character has gotten really annoying).

Historically, The Punisher has had trouble carrying 2 titles because they had the same exact stories in both books. Yeah, occasionally you'd get a crossover with Doctor Doom, but for the most part it was him killing the mob in The Punisher and over in Punisher War Journal, he was killing the mob. Then Punisher War Zone came out and what was he doing in that book? You guessed it! Killing the mob!

Eventually he was so handcuffed by his own status-quo, we would get stories like Frank getting plastic surgery and becoming a black man. Do you remember that one? Oh yeah, Marvel turned him into a black dude during some off the wall s**t story where he was disfigured and got facial reconstruction. The result....he became black and teamed up with Luke Cage the next few issues.

But that was the 90's for you.....Marvel was shoving so much goddamn Punisher, Ghost Rider and Venom down our throats they didn't give a hoot what was filling the Chromium front and back covers........

So all in all that's why I found Franken-Castle such a refreshing change and I wish it would have gone on longer. But I accept that no one else liked it and it's over now. I've got faith in Remender that he'll come up with something cool for Frank to do next, he's that good.

While you are right that monsters don't really fit into the Punisher's motif, you do have to concede that the Punisher lives in a world where such monsters exist along with the gods of many pantheons and religions, magic, mutants, an incredibly ******ed populace, Stephen Colbert beating Barack Obama in the popular vote, highly advanced technology, and people dying and coming back the next day.....several times.

So while monsters and the supernatural don't fit with the motif of the Punisher, they certainly belong in the Punisher's world. And honestly, what made Franken-Castle such a great read was that you could tell that Remender was having a lot of fun with the whole thing.

good list,, I like the "cell" the best.

I think Aaron is great.
he made the kingpin ruthless and bullseye in a true psychopath.
I like his writing,
he had some big shoe to fill for sure but he's doing great work.

Right now he's hasn't had 1 even sub-par comic.

This is the problem I have with Batman fans; fans that have a certain idea of how a character should be, and think that thats THE ONLY WAY he/she should be portrayed. Even if there is more than one title per month, each title has to be Punisher killing mobsters, or Batman beating mobsters. You change things up a bit, and no matter the quality, its "BRING BACK MY CHARACTER!!! I DONT SEE HOW A TRUE FAN COULD LIKE THIS CRAP". As someone said, the Punisher has went through a few different phases, black, mob boss, angel etc and now Franken-Castle. On the surface its just as dumb of an idea, but it has been executed really well, intially. Its a shame we won't get to see all of what Remender had planned.

I wonder what Marvel are doing with 616 Punisher after this limited series, In the blood ,

An other on going ?

It sounds like they are giving the character a break until they can figure out what to do with him. It also seems Remender won't come back as the writer, it'll be someone else.

Who ever it is they have Remender to thank because he's setting them up with
a de-aged Frank Castle in the body of a 30 yr old male due to the Bloodstone.

Cause the rumor is that Andy Diggle is coming on board to write the Punisher,

what you have said is wrong , if the Punisher had trouble keeping two titles going why did Marvel start a third with War Zone ?!?!?

And as well back in the day there was the limited series out at the same time as well, being POV , and Ghosts of the Innocents, and the graphic novels too, so the Punisher had no trouble with just two titles, now all this killed the character of for a while but this idea you have that the Punisher having more than one title , and them being the same, a bad thing, is that not the idea with all the Batman , Wolveraine, Superman Titles etc etc, are kind of all the same?!?!? Lol it's the same character , therefore the stories from each title follow a similar theme?

At least at the moment the Punisher has two very different titles...

That's the first I've heard of that. I'd much rather have Diggle on PunisherMAX than 616 PG-13 Punisher, but I still approve of it if it were true.

I already answered that.....

And Batman, Superman and Spider-Man are ICONS and giants of the industry. Wolverine......I consider him in the category of s**t that's shoveled to us like the above mentioned folks. Deadpool is another one.

Hell, even Captain America couldn't carry a second book. They tried twice.

Hey guys need your help with a quote from the Punisher MAX series. I would go through my stuff, but I am at work. In it, Frank tells someone to watch themselves and that he's never more than 9mm away, referring to a 9mm gun. Can someone get me the exact quote? I'd really appreciate it.

I think this is at the end of Slavers arc, will check for you tonight and let you know Dude,

Got me really wondering now !

I always thought the "Final Days" story arch was awesome... until the end. Really fell apart.

I soooooooo called that. :o

EDIT: Also, it's for the best. A man who is Frank Castle's age shouldn't go off doing what he does. This way, they get to keep the Vietnam War history, while making sure that he is physically capable of doing what he does.

It's from the end of the first arc of Ennis' Marvel Knights ongoing Punisher series. Issue #5, the one right where The Russian is killed. Again.

That ""In The Blood" cover is awesome. As is the Dan Brereton stuff for the last issue of FrankenCastle.

A few questions for those of you reading the 616 stuff: What's Frank's role in Shadowland (and how big is it?), how is Shadowland over all, and how do they explain Frank being normal?

I'm thinking about grabbing the Frankencastle hardcover when that comes out, and then go back and buy the two HC's of Remender's previous stuff, to upgrade from my single issues. It's not that I hated the idea of Frankencastle, I just didn't have too much of an interest in it.

So far Frank sorta just showed up in Shadowland. As for how he'll return to being normal, they're covering that in the last bit of Frankencastle and in the Blood. :)
