Thor Review
The mythological god finally makes it from the comic books to the big screen. When Thor (Played by Chris Hemsworth) disturbs the peace between Asgard and the other realms, he is punished by his father, Odin (Sir Anthony Hopkins). His punishment is banishment from Asgard and is sent to Earth. With the help of Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and her colleagues, Thor must learn his lesson, and to rid of his arrogant and uncontrollable behavior. Meanwhile, Asgard is at threat as Odin is ill, and can no longer take the thrown, leaving the god of mischief, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to lead. Thor must learn his lesson, and become worthy to wield the all mighty hammer of Thor, to save the fate of Earth and Asgard from his evil brother Loki.
Story: A great achievement of Thor is how the movie portrayed the character. The flaw with several superhero movies is the origin movie. It worked when Spider-Man and Batman Begins came out, but after seven or ten more of them, the origin storyline becomes old really fast. What Thor does, is give the audience a brief origin of the character, and then sets the viewers in the world of Asgard, allowing them to just accept things the way they were, and that method worked well. The story is simple, but the other components of the movie made it successful, and allowed such a simple story to be extremely impacting. Despite the weakness of the story, the character development, character portrayals, and the transitions between Asgard and Earth made up for it.
Acting: One of the strengths of Thor are the actors and actresses in it. As always, Portman and Hopkins give great performances, however, it was Hemsworth and Hiddleston that stole the show. As RDJ was Tony Stark, Chris Hemsworth looks like Thor, acts like Thor, and is Thor. Tom Hiddleston’s performance is possibly one of the best if not the best performance of a villain in any Marvel movie. The emotional and psychological depth Hiddleston brought for the character was spot on, and was very sleek. All in all, the performances were outstanding in this movie.
See it? Rent it? or Ditch it? : Thor is everything a Thor fan would want to see in a movie about the iconic comic book hero. Director Kenneth Branagh does an exceptional job with the character, and achieved bringing possibly one of the most difficult comic book character to film. At times the movie seems silly, but the reason it works, is because the film itself knows it’s silly. The only complaint I have is the after the credits scene. Out of all the Avenger build ups in the Marvel films, this one was lame, and not as impacting for me. Thor is an action packed, funny (with unforced humor), and a great escapism for viewers. The first blockbuster of this Summer blood bath is a hit, which hopefully is a good sign. Although Thor may not get the praise from the GA that Iron Man did, I really hope they give it a chance, for it is an entertaining and successful comic book film. See it.
