So that is just what I said, "he is promoting himself", doesn't mean it is for JLA as you also pointed out above. I don't really think a spread that potrays a character he is now playing in a running weekly drama and will be playing in another season is necessarily connected to JLA.
I don't think it's a smoking gun either, but I'll reiterate the point that Welling is notorious for *not* doing promotion unless he has to. Read: per contract. The dude is wicked private; he does his best to stay out of the public eye when he's not acting. For example, I doubt you'll ever see him campaign for a politician running for public office, or ride in a parade float. In fact, I think the last time he did anything of a grand public nature was when he threw out the first pitch at a Yankees/Red Sox game at Fenway in '06, and that's probably because he really wanted to do it (he's a huge Sox fan.) I can't remember the last time anybody got a real interview from him; he usually turns 'em down.
The most recent excuse was because he's too nervous to do one. Yeah. Okay.
So when the Vogue shoot was first reported, it came as a bit of a shock to many fans, particularly since the motif of the spread is superheroes. I'm
far from connecting those dots to JL, but it does send a message to those who believe Welling is trying to detach himself from a potential typecast by not doing publicity. Personally, I think he's embraced the genre. Took long enough.
Welling is doing the pics like you normally see with others celebrities doing magazines.
You haven't been paying attention. Welling
doesn't do spreads like you "normally see with other celebrities." That's the point. The only time I believe Welling did anything like that was when he was promoting Smallville or The Fog, and that's probably because he was contracted to do it.
It just for the magazines & it doesn't always have to do with publicity.
Actually, it has *everything* to do with publicity. It's face time with the public. It's done in order to get people familiar with the celeb so that interest builds for their projects. What's Welling doing now that he hasn't been doing for the last seven years? Well, for starters, he's promoting
himself, not his film(s) or a TV show.
Routh done that as well, so it's common really.
Yes, it's quite common among celebs looking to build their Q.
And I doubt Welling doing the pics mean he will be Supes in JLA.
I didn't say it did. But if his publicist is working on building Welling's recognition over a year *before* SV has ended its run, there might be something else in the pipeline for Welling this summer. Personally, I'd love to see him in a romantic comedy or action/adventure. Of course, JL goes w/o saying, but I'm not counting those chickies until I'm sure the film is even happening. I think Warners is in some deep doo doo with the Superman brand, and I wouldn't be surprised to hear that even they don't know how to proceed at this point.
He haven't put on a suit in the pics, has he? There you go then.
I don't think he's allowed to. Not yet, anyway. Warner Bros. would have a cow the size of Michigan if Welling appeared in a magazine wearing the Superman costume. Think about it. You know what kind of controversy that would cause for them, him, Smallville, and the Superman franchise in general? OMG!!! LOL
I could say the same with how you think Routh is a bad actor, because he got fired once from a tv show.
Huh? My opinion is based on his entire performance in SR as well as a few other roles I've seen him do. I never saw his performance in OLTL, but his being fired from that show doesn't change my opinion about his acting
now. He's still a poor actor, IMHO. Oh well. And not for nothing, but the post to which you refer was made in response to another person's remarks about Megan Gale's acting credentials. IIRC, the argument was that she had little to no experience working on some little seen Australian TV show. I said well at least she wasn't fired from it LOL. Was it a dig? Absolutely. Did I want to argue its implications as it related to Routh? Hell freakin' no.
That quite weak to describe his acting with the fired thing. Just because one think Welling is good, don't mean he is. It work the same for Routh.
What? Read my last reply.
Really? I know you dislike Routh with making fun of his first & middle name initial. That quite a waste of time.
You must have me confused with somebody else, Nightwing. I made a silly comment about his initials ONCE. It's like the comments calling Megan Gale a "horseface" or Armie Hammer "baking soda boy." That's making fun of somebody's looks or name to excess. But who cares? My opinion of Routh's acting has nothing to do with his name or initials, so why even bring that post up? It was made months ago. Did it bother you that much? Wow, if so.
My earlier post was to disagree with the person who felt Welling has only one "mildly distressed" expression, not to argue Routh's acting prowess, or lack thereof. I don't want to spam this thread with a dozen pictures of Welling's more comedic looks, but he's fully capable of a range of expression, and I have the screen caps to prove it. SV's Clark Kent,
as Clark Kent tends to be very serious because he's written to act "mildly distressed." If somebody doesn't like Welling
as Clark Kent, that's totally fine. I can understand not digging the actor in the role. But the one expression excuse doesn't fly with me since the actor has quite a repertoire and has demonstrated it
on the show.
don't get me wrong, I love Tom, seriously- I LOVE him, but I'm scared that the majority of the movie viewing population (which are not avid comicbook readers, unfortunately) wouldn't be able to separate Tom Welling from Smallville, from Tom Welling in the JL movie. They would be like, "Where's Chloe?" and "Where's Lana?" and "That's not Aquaman!" People are dumb...seriously, they are dumb.
No doubt. But it's more than just the general public; even professional critics can be dumb. When Batman Begins unspooled, some reviewers thought it was a prequel to the Burton franchise.
But that's neither here nor there. I think if a film is entertaining, the general public quickly forgets the non sequiturs. This applies especially to changes in casting. As far as we know, Justice League takes place in a world where the JLA already exist, comprised of suited superheroes with names like Batman and Wonder Woman. Why would the public ask where Lana and Chloe are when Lois Lane isn't even in the film (as far as we know)? The Justice episode of SV barely scratched the surface. With no WW or Batman, it was FAR from being the JLA that we know today.
None of this is any kind of real news. We've been hearing all these different scenarios from insiders for what seems like years.
So are you suggesting that people not discuss it?

"Old" news and rumors drive this forum LOL. I'm actually shocked that a thread with Welling's name has managed to remain for more than a few days
outside of the SV forum.
Smallville isn't that big of a show. Chances are that most of the movie viewing population haven't even seen it.
Possibly, but chances are equally as good that most of the movie going audience, particularly those in the younger demographics that Hollywood craves, have at least heard of SV and know it as "that Superman show." Many might even recognize the series' iconography such as the shirtless guy on a cross with a red "S" painted on his bare chest, and be vaguely familiar with that man's face - if not his abs.
That's not true. Here are the ratings for season 7, only 2 episodes (Bizzaro & CUre) were above 5million viewers final ratings, the rest barely made it to 4.5 with the SD+7 DVR ratings.
What prime time live-action show currently in its seventh season is doing better ratings than what it did in its fifth season, or fourth, or third? Better question: What show on the CW has
improved in the ratings since its move from The WB or UPN? Every year, ratings go down for most shows. It's a by-product of more viewing options (more channels) and increased entertainment choices in general. The days are LONG gone when a network show could fetch a 60% share of the entire viewing audience in one night. Final episode of M*A*S*H, anybody?
Well I don't think Olea is helping the argument for Tom as Superman if she is showing that the ratings are dropping on the show he stars in.
To a lay person, no. But the show will be going into its eighth season and is one of Warner's biggest money makers in the Superman franchise. Not even the networks look at total viewership; they look at demos. And Warners looks at things like syndication fees, DVD sales, ancillary profits and brand recognition.
Please don't believe everything Emi (or her hubby) say. She is not that trustworthy as some of you think. She made claim that Welling secretly meet with WB to do JL & nowhere did that really happend.
How do you know? You're just another anonymous person like Emi posting on the Internet. To this day, even Rob Sanchez stands by the "news" he broke on 8/24/07:

Emi had nothing to lose when she posted similar information two weeks *before* Rob Sanchez. Sanchez, on the other hand, put his reputation on the line. He went on television to report the "rumor." Why is everybody harping on Emi when Sanchez is the one that really put the rumor on the map?
Where there's smoke, there's fire. I personally believe there's some truth to this story. If you want to write it off as 100% false, that's your prerogative, but I don't think it takes a stretch of the imagination to believe a faction at Warners has been keenly interested in getting Welling to suit up for years. Justice League could have easily rekindled that desire with those people.
Not to mention she claim Singer won't do MoS & Routh won't don the suit again. How come no others news pick that up as official then? I trust Variety or other like it than someone who post on the Internet like Emi.
Wasn't it Anne Thompson of Variety who wrote on the trade's own blog site that whoever plays Superman in the next film will depend on who directs Superman? I'm paraphrasing from memory. Personally, I could give a rat's patootie about the Superman franchise if they continue from SR. Yeah, I disliked it that much. But the poop hit the fan last month with the S&S lawsuit, so all bets are off right now. I don't think even *they* know the best way to handle the franchise.
