Green Lantern needs to be marketed. Nobody knows who/what he is. Plus Warner Bros. need people to see it before Transformers rolls in 12 days later.

Or Cars 2 which is 7 days later.

Saw a great new TV spot multiple times tonight on various channels.

"The number one movie in the world is now the best reviewed film of the year.."

It goes on to show quotes from Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, The New York Times, and other big critics.

Was just coming here to post that same thing JP!

I'm really hoping this film has strong legs. It's the best movie I've seen in a long time and one of the best comic books movies to be made to date. I really want to see a sequels to this

Well despite being a good film and I'll never stop saying this no matter how old it gets but it wasn't a good Xmen move. Those folks in charge just refuse to get it. More then any of the comic films that have made it to the big screen no other on more then Xmen is where I heard people from the creative team saying w
How they wanted to make it this way or that way. A James Bond with powers and that's just the most recent. These aren't characters any of them had a hand in creating, so for then love of god stick to the darn source material and not make it how u feel it should be done.

The box office suffered I think do mostly to fans and the general movie going audience that is familiar with Xmen. I think a lot of people just stayed home and spread the word of their displeasure to family and
friends. No Storm, no Cyke, No Jean Grey. The real first class. Time Displaced mutants, crappy Hellfire club with missing members but mutants like Riptide and Azazel filling in where Mastermind, Lelund, Selene, and Pierce are supposed to be. The sad thing is that Fox will misread this as Wolverine not being in the film for the less then stellar box office. It's not the case Fox. Stick to the source material.

The movie still would have performed about the same if Storm, Cyclops, and Jean were in as well.

This had to followup after the two failures that were X3 and Wolverine. it making this much was still quite an achievement.

It was the first time I saw a movie ad with the Rotten Tomatoes fresh stamp. Teehee.

My first initial displeasure wasn't that Storm/Cyke/Jean/Wolverine were missing, but that it was a prequel set in the 60s. I'm glad I overcame that to give it a chance.

Would the average movie goer even KNOW who Mastermind, Selene, Hellfire Club were?

Strong legs? It's doubtful. Based on the track record of the past Xmen films the movies have a ceiling. Meaning it's the same demo that is going to see them. It looked like a lot of folks in that Demo was displeased with the direction of FC. Even though their is so much inaccuracy in the film and not a good Xmen flick I gotta admit it's a good movie.

So, First Class 2 or X-Men 4?

For some reason the ending where Magneto springs Emma Frost from captivity seem like a set-up for her to have a role in X-Men 4. There are a lot of ways they can continue the franchise.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop was a huge hit actually and everyone thought he was the best part of popular comedies like Hitch and Grown Ups. Not to mention, his sitcom The King of Queens was popular and on the air for just under a decade.

People love Kevin James.
I love me some King of Queens... :D

That's debatable. I heard someone say walking out where was the Xmen. I take that to mean the members we all know and love. Also when what happened to Xavier at the beach this guy burst out "that's not the way that happened". It was a young guy too. That just make me think more people know the Xmen and history then Fox realize.

I think you're overestimating the influence of hardcore fans. We really are negligible in terms of our box office influence. I do agree with you that Cyke, Jean, and Storm would have gotten more people into the theaters, because their popularity has made it to the mainstream.

However, overall, I think they did a good job with the challenge (and many continuity constraints) of pre-booting the franchise.

X4? Emma is like 50 years in the past of the current Xmen. They made her a peer of Xavier and Magneto. What, Helen Miran is gonna show up in X4 as Emma? I think it was a missed opportunity not setting up X4 with the Hellfire club.

I hate how certain people are playing up this movie's boxoffice. This movie did not open above expectations and it is not going to have awesome legs just because Super 8 isn't going to open huge. Also Super 8 cost 50mil to make it doesn't need a huge opening to make bank, especially if it has decent legs. GL is also going to open around First Class numbers at the very least so like or hate the way that movie looks it will hurt First Class. It's childish to bash it's comp just because you want it to have legs. Also nothing could be coming out next weekend and the movie still isn't going to have a 30% drop because thats just not how the vast majority of these types of films behave.

I loved the film but I'm not going to live in lala land, this movie will not be some huge grosser, that ship sailed when it only opened with 55mil this weekend and that monday number is not pointing to some BridesMaid style legs. Be happy if it makes 150+mil.

Fox is the one who f**ked this film by making one medicore sequel and a terrible prequel before this.

EDIT:

I still find it funny how 55mil is a great opening for an X-Men film but was terrible and disappointing for the R rated Watchmen.

This is where I have no problem with alterations to the comic history. The original story of how the prof became crippled would not have been as strong as how it happened in XM:FC.

I bet if you took a hundred people off the street and asked them how Xavier lost the use of his legs in the original X-Men comics, you would get one hundred people thinking you were out of your mind.

Awwww.....

Maybe it'll be on Youtube soon.

Wait, I thought Source Code was the best reviewed film of the year....which, is still my #1 movie of the year. :woot: (I think X-Men is #3)

I think you and Fox underestimate the power of the fans. While percentage wise in ticket sales I agree we are small. However if it's say 100,000 thousand Xmen comic fans and we each are displeased with the films and complain to family and friends that can have an effect on box office. I guess u have to look at it like polling. A displeased fan can spread them word and that one person may represent a 100 people or so. It can add up quickly in terms of causing people to stay away and not see the film. Not saying I'm a 100 percent right but theirs merit in what I'm saying.

Let's keep the discussion on the box office and not on nitpicks about the movie. We have other review threads for that.

I thought everyone already accepted that this film was going to make about $150 tops...?

Also Watchmen, like TIH, had massive drops each week after release. It's not wrong for people to hope that First Class does better. If it performs like a typical comic book/X-Men film then I think $150 is secure. If it performs like Watchmen or TIH then we're looking at $130, if even that. . .

Helen Mirren is awesome!! They were going to go for an older Emma for X3 anyway, so it's not that farfetched to have an older Emma. Old Mags and Xavier worked well so an older Emma is doable.

It's true that you can spread bad word of mouth. I just don't think that many people spend time doing it to any real degree. I mean in the way that you're saying it happens.

No no no man, I totally agree. I agree some alterations are fine
and that scene is a good example
of one. The way from the comics
should never see the light of day in
the movies. Xavier thwarting the plans of an alien named Lucifer? Um he!! no. I'm all for changes if it makes the story more adaptable for the big screen. Unfortunately their was a lot of bad in terms of history and continuity in FC and a
lot of it was too much for me to
just ignore. FC is a good film but I can not in good conscience as a fan say it was a good Xmen movie. It wasn't
