The Dark Knight The Rachel Dawes thread

She's a fantastic actress, and I always felt Katie was a compromise between Nolan and the studio, perhaps wishful thinking but none the less.

I'm not the biggest fan of recasting, but it's been done and if her character serves the story then at the very least I like the use of continuity between films. Making the best of an non-ideal situation in my mind.

I'm not too fond of recasting either, but why Maggie? I don't understand. Very disappointing. Oh well!

And bares a striking resemblance to Katie.

Gyllenhaal joining Batman sequel
Actress taking Holmes role in 'Dark Knight'
By PAMELA MCCLINTOCK
Gyllenhaal

Maggie Gyllenhaal is in final talks to star opposite Christian Bale in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight," the next installment in the revitalized Batman franchise.
She'll play the role of Rachel Dawes, played by Katie Holmes in "Batman Begins." Holmes dropped out of the project earlier in the year.

Nolan is set to begin lensing in the late spring or early summer. Pic is eying a summer 2008 release.

Producers are Emma Thomas, Charles Roven and Nolan.

Legendary Pictures and Warners are co-financing partners on the project.

Gyllenhaal, a new mother, was most recently in theaters with "Stranger than Fiction" and "World Trade Center."

Gyllenhaal is repped by Creative Artists Agency and Benderspink.

Never heard of her before... until now . :whatever:

This may strike you as odd

but sometimes actors are cast because they can act

act very well

Some only see her as a top notch actress because of Secretary. Is it really her acting or something else? Same rules with Katie claiming she is crappy then guys changed their minds when they saw her on The Gift.
Fickleness much? The board allows Katie bashing from her looks and everything but when some disses Maggie board moderating becomes strict. Double standard much?
I suppose posting Playboyish pics of women and actresses are a classy and respectful touch to women?!!

Funny Jett from BOF mentioned the Darrin syndrome on this Rachel recasting when actually that Bewitched recast jumped the shark paving the way for the show's downfall. WB is actually smart and playing it safe
because they're not denying media reports Katie dropped out of TDK.
It was Jett from BOF who started that campaign and mockings but never officially coming from Warner Bros. They are avoiding the Redstone-Paramount fallout because look at how pathetic Redstone is these days.
He is a puppy and desperate for Tom to be his golden boy again.
All his mockings on Tom he denies them now and it all backfired on him.
And if TDK will have misfires Katie could always be their fallout girl or just
remain a class act like Katie. There's nothing good in a mud-slaying debacles.
What I admire from Tom and Katie is that they are laughed at and mocked by the tabloids and some ppl but they're not entertaining it but working hard behind the scenes.

I can't wait for the Katie vs. Maggie threads in 2008! ;) Honestly, I'm fine with the re-casting. I thought Katie was alright as Rachel. But, honestly, her performance and her character was like the least memorable in the movie. Perhaps Maggie will improve this!

You don't deserve that Steve McQueen avy!

She can definitely act, but she wouldn't have been my first choice as Rachel Dawes. That's all I'm saying.

So it's been confirmed.
:woot: :woot:
Warner Bros. made a good choice on not letting Katie back, it allowed room for a better actress to step in.

What a letdown.

LostSon, I have seen Katie recently in Hollywood?

Gone is the cute girly girl we saw in Begins but now she's a FOXY mature woman. I understand Tom's concerns.

Love Maggie, still find Rachel Dawes a horribly useless character.

I'm extremely happy about Maggie's casting. I would have loved Rachel McAdams, but Maggie is a Golden Globe-nominated actress; she'll own the role. Although I liked Katie in BB, it was slightly distracting watching her trying to up her performance when she's surrounded by some legends. I know I won't have that problem with Gyllenhaal.

she's the voice of reason for bruce

I'm not saying that Rachel is my fav character, but i can see why she was somewhat useful in BB.

She was decent, but I think Mags has better skills.

I just don't endorse recasting.

She may well be but she is far from my choice

This is my biggest grumble,Nolan should have had cast locked down contractually before they made the character a part of the story

That is all.

I agree. Nolan and Goyer supposedly have this master plan but they can't even ask people to return until a couple of months before filming starts. Batman Begins has been out for over a year and a half now, you'd think Nolan would have at least thought to ask Katie to come back. Same goes for Freeman, who is supposedly not signed yet even though Fox is the script.

It's certainly not how I'd make a movie worth over 100 million dollars, that's for sure.

That being said, I'm glad it's Maggie that's replaced her. Though, I'd prefer Maggie as her own character (I think Janice Porter would fit the story and Rachel's supposed 'critical role' in the story - according to Chud anyway -about a thousand times more than Rachel. She seems more like a Maggie sort of role and she's works in the D.A.'s office AND she's from the comics - fits well).
