The Dark Knight The Rachel Dawes thread

cool glad Gyllenhaal is Dawes. Its gonna weird seeing her on screen with ledger. I bet Maggies thinking this dude kissed my brother

I agree. Nolan and Goyer supposedly have this master plan but they can't even ask people to return until a couple of months before filming starts. Batman Begins has been out for over a year and a half now, you'd think Nolan would have at least thought to ask Katie to come back. Same goes for Freeman, who is supposedly not signed yet even though Fox is the script.

It's certainly not how I'd make a movie worth over 100 million dollars, that's for sure.

That being said, I'm glad it's Maggie that's replaced her. Though, I'd prefer Maggie as her own character (I think Janice Porter would fit the story and Rachel's supposed 'critical role' in the story - according to Chud anyway -about a thousand times more than Rachel. She seems more like a Maggie sort of role and she's works in the D.A.'s office AND she's from the comics - fits well).

Variety mentined Freeman, so he's signed. When Aaron Eckhart joined, Hollywood Reporter mentioned Freeman as well.

Katie either turned the role down b/c of Cruise, or according to Latino Review, she was kicked off b/c of Warner Bros.(Believing Latino Review or not, they still have some weight) Either way, it could of been out of Nolan's hands and it was PROBABLY too late to kick Rachel to the curb.

Delighted to hear this. Great actress, let's hope the role is better written in TDK. Miranda, you must be happy as a pig in s***.

Then if that's the case WB should have made this move a LOT sooner than this so they could have written her out the script, this is all a bit of a buzzkill for me but still at this point i just want them to muddle on and start filming.

First of all, I´m happy we no longer have a "weak link" in the cast. It´s top-notch people all around. Second, recasting and even late recasting happens all the time, it´s nothing to freak out about and doesn´t make Nolan incompetent or anything (especially cuz reports are it was WB who kicked Holmes out anyway). Just as an example, Basinger replacing Young in Batman 89. And for the "hot" argument... Rachel is supposed to be a serious professional woman, she´s not a "bimbo", an actress who´s attractive without being every teenager´s hormonal fantasy is just right.

hunter,

Sure, Nolan should've had the entire cast locked down but that wouldn't have stopped WB from getting rid of Holmes anyway. This has nothing to do with her performance in Begins or her "dropping out due to scheduling conflicts."

This is about WB getting rid of her because of the press tour for the film and the attention her relationship got during that time...which I personally feel you can't blame her for....

Just my personal take on it....

I'm glad Maggie's taking the job because they do favor each other alot but I'm just not happy with the way WB handling this thing. No matter what they say, Holmes didn't cost them millions of dollars on Begins.

Like what I said, it depends if Latino Review is telling the truth. From my past expereince recently, a studio can spin the truth like crazy. It's a dirty business.

If WB is to blame, yes, they should of done that early on.

Cool! Though as I said a while ago I think the TDK crew would of preffered Gyllenhaal over most of the other rumoured candidates, as she would make the transition (interms of appearance) from Katie to her much smoother.

I won't say that she's a better actress, though she very may well be. But I haven't really seen anything with her in it yet. :D

Octoberist,

Latino Review is tellin' the truth. WB got rid of her and both parties involved spun it to save face...plain and simple...

Maggie is good.

I think she's attractive, but an aquired taste. I like her attitude and persona though.

Octoberist,

Again, I'm only happy with Maggie because she is good and she and Katie do favor each other in appearance....(even though Holmes is hotter....)

the whole deal with WB and Katie is messy but will be forgotten..by MOST...if not all...I hope.

Maggie is a great actress with a geniune charm. Very sweet.

Plus, it'll blow over because once the film arrives, both parties involve will try to avoid questions about it.

I'm sure someone will try and get a quote from Holmes and she'll say exactly what the Variety article mentioned.

Again, both sides are trying to save face. We'll never hear anyone publicly give the real truth but it's right there if you read between the lines and remember WB's reaction to the Holmes and Cruise situation.

It's not really rocket science trying to figure out this situation.

Yeah, it´s truth, these things work in a more complicated way than people think.

To address the first part that press tour was ages ago,if WB knew then they should have told Nolan before they wrote the script,no excuses here just bad business.

On the latter part Ultimate i am tired of explaining my stance on that

hunter,

About the first part, I completely agree. I know it was ages ago but I'm pretty sure WB had their minds mind up a long time ago. I guess they figured Nolan would do a new love interest in the second film just like the previous Batman franchise....(considering how the film technically ended...)

Still, at least Nolan didn't get a melon to replace Holmes. Say what you want but Maggie's got skills.

I just prefer Holmes mainly because her being the weak link wasn't her fault in the first place. It has some to do with Goyer's writing (eventhough I think he and Nolan did a pretty good job on the character in the first film.). But, it mostly has to do with casting. No matter what they were going to do, Holmes just LOOKS younger than Bale, eventhough they are suppose to be the same age in the film. She LOOKS younger than everyone in that cast. Her wardrobe in the film was appropriate for the character but it's her face.

I can't say you can blame that aspect on Katie. She did her best and I personally feel she held her own....

That's also highly unprofessional, shows a lack of communication

We´ll never know what really happened, but who knows? Maybe they struggled with it. Maybe there were people at WB who wanted her back and pushed for her, and others didn´t. These things can be complicated. It´s life. Plus, as far as I´m concerned, it ended up being for better anyway.

The latter part wasn´t meant specifically for you, but to address that argument in general.

I wonder if she was nolans original choice..maybe she was to busy to star in the first film.

Great move Nolan and WB!!

Re-casting is never popular, but in this case, it will be. Holmes got fired because of bad press and Nolan replaced her with a better actress. Nice.

The cast is solid - Bale, Freeman, Oldman, Caine, Ledger, Eckhart, and now Maggie. Very impressive cast..........

There may have been some debates but not ones that cause this kind of problem on a $150M movie, you don't write a major part and then not have the actress locked, that is sloppy.

I disagree it's for the better on either end but to clarify

I didn't want

Now i am not gonna harp on this,it's just another disappointing choice on this movie for me,Only the fact Bale and Nolan are returning and that Jonathon is writing makes me feel hyped on this movie at the moment

Can't argue with the facts jeff.

It was a great move.

^Exactly Robo, it was a great move to get rid of Holmes.
