The Dark Knight The Rachel Dawes thread

^That's fair. I mean say what you want about Rachel Dawes, but calling Maggie a 'weak actress' is justb ridiculous.

The Rachel death thing is more of a wish of some fans which have turned into speculation. Its very far from comfirmed.

Rachel was/is a completely useless character. In the first film she served as a moral compass which easily could have been replaced by Alfred or flashbacks of Thomas Wayne. She is a terrible love interest and frankly just uninteresting. There are very few love interest types in the Batman stories that are worth a damn and she certainly is not one of them. I find it funny that Mask of the Phantasm handled a love interest significantly better than any live-action Batman movie.

Why is everyone hating on rachel? Seriously, I dont get it

She serves absolutely no purpose. She wasn't needed for the moral guidance, she didn't progress the story significantly, and she wasn't even a full-on love interest. She was there to be saved once and to taze Scarecrow in the face, which was a pretty big WTF moment for me.

The whole character could have been cleanly excised and no one would have missed her. Various interviews have said the character was supposed to be Harvey Dent which would have been WAY better; then we could have had some time to set up a Bruce/Harvey friendship that probably won't get the time it deserves in TDK. She is a completely arbitrary character.

Yeah she came off as a tacked on character. She wasn't fully one thing or the other. I know Nolan said he wanted someone close to Wayne from childhood but the character to me seemed like the product of a WB executive suggestion that they have a female character to balance out the cast.

Honestly, I think the only way Rachel's death could be wrong is if it doesn't happen. :yay:

Yes, and since when has Bruce ever had the luxury of a friend from childhood?

I saw it in one of the comics. But it was a terrible story...

It's kind of funny that no one wants to think about what Bruce was like before his parents died. Only the torture of their absence. :csad:

Before his parents died he was a normal, well-adjusted, healthy kid. Whats interesting about that? :cwink: After his parents died, he became a dark, brooding, obsessive, self-made superhero. Way cooler :woot:

That was then and this is now.

I don't mind Tommy. At least his character was written well, and didn't intrude on Batman's origins.

I'm not sure what that meant, but I'll assume it complimented my sexiness. So cool, I agree. :o

Nobody likes Hush :cwink:

Besides, he doesn't exactly qualify under the category of "the luxury of a childhood friend." Childhood enemy would be more accurate.

Hey now! Just because I'm nobody, that doesn't mean I'm not somebody! Tommy Elliot was a decent character, in my book.

And he was a friend to Bruce in his childhood. Jealousy and hate came later.. well after puberty set in.

Damn that puberty! Ruins everything!

Seriously, my point is that Bruce never had a friend in childhood that carried over to his new life as Batman...until some monkeying around in BB. The lack of a "support system" is part of what makes Bruce the nutter that we know and love :cwink:

But he didn't lack a support system....

He didn't have parents or siblings or friends. Just a butler. And Leslie depending on which version you're reading. That sounds pretty lacking to me.

And Crook you can't get compliments on your sexiness until you decide what gender you want to be. :cwink:

Alfred and Leslie served as his surrogate parents. Bruce wouldn't be an upstanding individual without them, I'd think.

His mental instability comes from the death of his parents and his (in)ability to cope with that fact. It'd have been there with or without friends.

Penis. :o

I was always under the impression that Leslie just checked in on Bruce once in a while. She served as the closest thing he had to a mother after the tragedy took place, but didn't quite fill Martha's shoes. Or did she?
