We all knew it was coming (Dawes not making it through the movie), but I actually felt for her and dent, the way the joker set it up so they were talking to each other though they knew only one of them would live. To me it gave heart to a character i didnt really care for at all, and added emotion to the scene.

anyone else?

A shocking death, but thoroughly emotional. Maggie sold me on the character and owned the role in a way that Holmes never could.

I liked Maggie as Dawes as well. And when it cuts to her in the warehouse, surrounded by all that gasoline, and we hear that piano cue from Begins......................very powerful.

yes the music cue added a very nice touch, and then her death mid sentence

Maggie definitely added another touch to the character which made her extremely likeable.

I remember reading reports about her dying but wasn't 100% sold and was very sad when it all happened.

The whole scene is just terribly depressing when you know Batman is going for her and the moment he opens the door he is saving the 'wrong' person (whether the Joker does that on purpose is for another debate). Bale did such an excellent job when he opens it you can still feel his reaction under the suit. The same for Aaron who was incredible in that whole scene (and the film all together). The scene after as well with the Joker escaping, no real music and hanging out the cop car makes you truly realize how ruthless this character is.

I thought that the whole movie was depressing, even though Gordon gives off an inspiring type speech at the end.
The connection to the Roman Empire was a nice touch as well with the citizens appointing Batman in a sense in the time of need, only now to turn on him (although brought on by himself) and the connection with how the mob appointed the Joker in their time of need only for him to seize as much power as possible and bring Gotham into utter chaos.

It was a great film which I think has not been fully processed yet by the actual meaning. I think from what I hear from friends (which are not crazy fans like us lol) is the general reaction is being speechless after the film.

Great acting and a great story tied in with great effects leaves a VERY memorable film which will live for a long time.

Well I got really sad when Bruce was telling Alfred "She was going to wait for me" Then Alfred takes the letter.

After seeing both actresses play Rachel, I prefer Katies version instead. Maggie played her to light hearted, while Katie played her tough.

I hated Katie and her (slaps man with purse behind her, then threatens man in front of her with a taser) "YA thats right you better run" She completely forgets about the guy behind her ....because we all know a purse will totally knock out a man.

Soooo....Katie wrote and directed that scene all by herself?

My wife and I both thought that Maggie did the better acting job.

No, but Katie still could have voiced an opinion. Hell she could have acted like she was still concerned someone was behind her. She also did say "thats right you better run" the way it was said was awful.

She and Nolan know whether or not she voiced an opinion on that scene. We don't. I don't know if she did. Do you? She may have acted like she was concerned that someone was behind her....and the DIRECTOR directed her to not do that. I am not defendeding her because I think she is the greatest thing since sliced bread (see my previous response where I stated that I though Maggie did a better job).....but I don't blame actors for something that writers and directors do.

I really disliked Katie Holmes in Begins. Her, the direction of the character, the characterization, and I hated how she kept spouting all those cliche monologues "It's not who you are blah blah," "This is you real mask Bruce blah blah," etc.

The character was much better written in this movie, and Maggie is a great actress who did a wonderful job. I don't put all of the blame on Katie for her part in BB, half goes to Nolan and Goyer, who improved this time.

No doubt in my mind Maggie was the better actress. She was much more believable as an ADA and she had a maturity to Rachel that Holmes lacked.

I agree 100%. Maggie may not be a conventional beauty like Katie, but she has the acting chops and really made me feel sad for her demise, whereas I didn't feel anything for Katie's Rachel. Her death was sincere and believable enough that it convinced me that a good man like Dent would turn to the dark side due to her death. For that, Maggie deserves accolades.

The actor is responsible for bringing those words on the script to life. The director does have final say on whether or not he liked the performance and was what he wanted, however that would then make all actors obsolete and not responsible for the decisions they make with the characters.

So it goes back to everything else she did in BB was just as bad. It was like she was reading the lines. Katie should be held accountable for her actions (or lack there of) Especially if the director has shown with the other actors and actresses that he is able to get the best out of them.

Ya I was really bummed when she died, and how she died mid sentence.

Did you notice that she was still alive when the paramedics layed her out on the stretcher? Her eyes kinda flickered for a second.

I do. A good actor can win an Oscar reading the ingredients on a cereal box. Holmes can't come close. I remember thinking in Thank You for Smoking that Holmes and Eckhart had little chemistry as well.

I suspect that if Maggie was in Batman Begins, she'd have been better received. I do think the character sucked in the first film, she was always "on" and in tough lawyer mode. She was barely in the second. Which is why I was surprised I connected with Gyllenhal.
