The Rank and Rate Man of Steel thread

Haven't written a formal one yet, but here's what I've said so far about it on FB...

"I think Man of Steel is this year's Amazing Spider-Man for me:

A movie that's technically good, but missing some of the key elements of the character, that it ends up just making me nostalgic for the imperfect but somehow more enjoyable preceeding films."

"I... Didn't really like it. It felt strange. Like a disaster movie rather than anything hopeful or even character-driven. The entire cast seemed oddly wasted due to either lack of screen time or lack of quality characterization. The pacing and plot structure was pretty terrible, and the entire movie played like some stale form of recited past events than anything alive or immersive."

"Seriously though, I would say it wasn't well written for the following reasons...

1). The pacing was very poor. We just kept getting jerked in and out of flashbacks with no real flow or nuance between the transitions. Not to mention the numerous action scenes threw a lot of the movie off kilter. Making it seem like the last hour of the movie was just what should've been the ending battle done over and over again.

2). The dialogue for many of the characters was way too heavy handed. Pretty much every single thing Jonathan Kent said was purely to drive the film's big character arc for Superman. Jor-El also suffered heavily from that.

3). Lack of characterization. With so much of the dialogue going to purely advancing the plot and/or Supes' character arc, pretty much none of the supporting cast was given a chance to really breathe any life into their characters. For instance, Lawrence Fishburn just didn't FEEL like Perry White, he just felt like a cardboard cutout who's only purpose was story advancement.

4). All of those little moments that Becky and I have mentioned that would have built some emotional investment and excitement for the characters and movie were all missing as well, ultimately making the movie seem rather hollow and lifeless."

I agree with everything you said. I just wasn't as bothered about them to ruin my enjoyment of the film.. in fact, i thought that with all these flaws in place, it as still the best movie of the year.. but if you fixed these flaws, it'll instantly be a classic...

I probably liked Iron Man 3 the most of anything, myself.

Although I still need to see Fast 6.

Just watched the Collider interview.

I really hope he comes back for the sequel. He really gained my trust with this first installment.

Iron man 3 and fast 6 are at par.. they are both comedies... LMAO watching them...

I wished they had inserted some light heartedness in MOS... that'll brighten up everything... maybe a few more jokes to break the dourness..

Still, like i said, even with it's flaws, i was overwhelmed by it... same with my friends.. even my mom...

I just watched it a second time and I loved it even more!

I'm finding it hard to come up with reasons not to give it 10/10!

I can't wait to watch it again!

I think they already confirmed he is.

While definitely comedic, I loved what they did with Tony's character arc in IM3. It was wonderfully executed in a relatively subtle and effective way.

I thought the film was good although the pacing, editing, and script was weak but the action, scope, and performances were STELLAR.

This film get's a 7.5 from me which rounds up to a cool 8 on this poll.

Same here, but I enjoyed Man of Steel as well I was pretty impressed.

Solid 6.5.
+ Suit looked great, though I wish it was a little brighter.
+ Cavill did a good work with the lack of script he was given, had a great screen presence and looked like how I imagined Supes to be.
+ Crowe was great, much better father figure than Jonathan Kent.

- Didn't like the saturated colour.
- The hand held camera work.
- The sheer amount of destruction was astonishing.
- The super close and fast paced action was distracting.
- Lois was boring and seemed to get in the way more than help.
- The whole tone was a downer and I never felt like I was having any fun.

I saw it this weekend, and absolutely loathed it. The first 30-45 minutes were great. The rest, not so much. The action was good, but there were so many looking failures in this movie...characters who could apparently teleport (Lois at the end, Ma Kent at the school)...Superman feeling more upset over Zod than the 5 million or so citizens of Metropolis that were killed...I could go on.

That being said, I rank it tied with Superman Returns, and better than 3 and 4. It does NOT make my top ten.

I apologize to all who liked the movie. My intention isn't to "hate". I really wanted to like it, but I just didn't.

Dont apologize everyone entiled to there opinion .Just one thing about the zod killing, he was upset because he killed the last remaining kryptonian the last physical link to his alien/kryptonian side. The thing is this character needs to develop, it was not the definitive superman in this film.

Saw it again last night and have bumped it up to 8.5 i loved it even more for some reason though the cinema where i saw it (vue) had so much better 3D the sound was better aswell(could be because i was right at the back).I was much better invested this time round pacing and editing still abit of an issue but i love that score during the gravity beam i honestly got goosebumps.

just watch the movie like what you have done to any other movies...
don't judge it while watching. i think it will do u a lot better.

Just got back from watching it a 2nd time. Loved it even more. I was originally at 8.5, now bumping it to a 9. I have heard people say that when viewing it again the pacing felt better. I felt the same way, don't know why that is the case. The first time watching it, I felt that last fight with Zod to be a bit tedious, didn't feel that this time out. So many touching moments in this film that I found absolutely beautiful, more than any other comic book film. Zimmer's score is fantastic.

My only gripe is that there still needed to be a scene between Zod's death and Superman taking down that drone. Just one scene to acknowledge the destruction. Other than that, a glorious Superman film. Finally, Superman is back! Thank you Snyder and crew!!!

Saw it a second time on Sunday. I'm staying at an 8. Might write an entire review soon.
+ Action was on point... Mostly
+ Acting was solid throughout
+ Had just enough heart
+ Krypton was fantastic
+ Faora. Need I say more?

- Lois & Superman felt a bit forced
- I could've done without the giant tentacle fight or just done in a different way
- Like FlawlessVictory said, definitely could've used a scene between the fight and the end

8.2 average score here
8.2 on IMDb (it will most likely dip a bit though)
82% of the audience liked it on Rotten Tomatoes
I sense a pattern here...
Watch out guys. Grace Randolph says the audience is divided. :o

And 8.4 user score on Metacritic.

These scores will definitely go down as its still early but I think at worse it ends up in the high 7's which is great and certainly shows the audience is not divided.

Nice! Yup. High 7s all around seems about right.
I was so ridiculously off on my "Tomatometer" guess. (high 80s to low 90s)
My average rating was a little off for RT. (I said around 7)
But I was right about the GA eating this up so far. Some stiff competition coming up though.
As long as they don't rush this, I'm looking forward more.

I guessed high 80's as well for the Tomatometer, woops. :woot: But you're right, the audience is definitely showing their approval overall.

Saw it, and it was ok, it didn't thrill me the way I thought it would.

It didn't feel like a Superman movie, I'll get it on Blu-ray but I don't need to see it in the theatre again.

best superman movie for me but also i hated returns and i dont like the reeve movies at all so it also wins by default aswell:yay:

9/10

I dunno, I liked the first 3/4 of the movie, but, for me, once the tentacle space craft fight scene...I just sorta zoned out. I love my action, but this sorta felt too overwhelming. I think the real issue is I never felt the characters were in pain or danger. Consider this: in TDKR, when Bane and Batman trade punches, it's clear they're in pain. I didn't even like TDKR as much as most people, and I felt they botched the backbreaking scene--BUT that fight was tense. The characters were in peril. Here...not so much.

Though the rest of the film I liked a whole lot. The flashbacks don't bother me as much as other people. Not only that, but I really like the whole build-up of Superman as a messiah. I dunno, there's a lot to like, but I left feeling zoned out...

To be perfectly honest, I thought this film was mixed bag. On the one hand, I think the cast was top-notch; Henry Cavill mad for a decent Clark Kent/Superman, as did Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Michael Shannon did a great job as General Zod and, while still hammy, gave him a lot of depth. And Russel Crowe as Jor-El kicked all kinds of ass even as a hologram. As did Antje Traue as Faora. In terms of visuals and cinematography, it looks incredible (as if the trailers left any doubt) with some great special effects--particularly whenever Superman was in flight (and having him float up whenever he fell as opposed to just standing up normally? Brilliant!) And those fight sequences? Pure comic book goodness, which Zack Snyder delivered in spades. You literally could feel those punches and shock-waves as you saw them on the screen.

Unfortunately, when it comes to story and characterization, the film winds up being a complete and utter mess just like Smallville and Metropolis end up in the film.

For instance, that opening sequence on Kyrpton is gorgeous and very good sci-fi fantasy (even though it's basically Dune, Prometheus, the Matrix, and the Star Wars prequels mashed-up together) which I found to be quite intriguing and had good pacing. Problem is it's nothing more than a 20 minute prologue which could've been cut completely out of the film and you wouldn't have harmed the film in the least, especially since hologram Jor-El proceeds to explain and show Clark pretty much what we just saw at the beginning of the movie. To me, the film should've opened with Kal-El's ship crashing on the Kent farm, and we should've seen the scenes on Krypton and it's eventual destruction when Jor-El explains to Clark where he came from.

Also, while I believe Kevin Costner did a very good job as Jonathan Kent, I thought his depiction in terms of the script was awful. Granted, I get that Pa Kent wanted to protect his adoptive son and I do think his belief that the world would be more inclined to fear Clark makes sense, but the message he teaches Clark amounts to "It's better to keep yourself safe and protect your secret even at the cost of other people's lives" which a horrible message for a parent to teach their kid. Not to mention it contradicts him also telling Clark that he was sent to Earth for a reason and that he was going to change the world, cause that means Clark revealing himself to the world eventually, doesn't it? Not to mention Clark goes against his dad's very advice when he saved the workers on the oil rig. Oh, and don't get me started on Pa Kent's death scene with the tornado--not only did I think it was cheesy instead of poignant, the circumstances leading up to it do not make a lick of sense (seriously, who stops their car and gets out of it during the middle of a tornado? Especially since Kansas is tornado country?)

Likewise, while it's understandable that Zod wants to save the Kryptonians via the Codex, The World Engine really serves no purpose whatsoever other than to be set pieces for the climax. Think about it--Zod and the other Kryptonians, just like Clark, have superhuman abilities on Earth due to it's lower gravity, yellow sun, and atmosphere. By terraforming the Earth to be like Krypton, they essentially are given up their opportunity to be literally a stronger race, are they not? Oh sure, there's initial pain and discomfort due to sensory overload, but we see they'll be capable of overcoming it in time, and any new Kryptonians who are born will become acclimatized like Clark did.

And as great as those fight scenes were, Superman really doesn't seem to pay much attention to all the collateral damage and the thousands of lives that are lost as a result. (Yeah, telling the people of Smallville to get off the street and seek shelter in buildings is going to do a fat lot of good while you're being punched and thrown around in the buildings there, Supes. And I sure didn't see you act the least bit upset over the fact that the town you grew up in was just virtually destroyed.) There's even a point where Superman takes Zod out of Metropolis and into orbit--thereby possibly preventing further destruction and loss of life--only to come right back down to Metropolis again.

That, of course, leads to the now infamous scene of Superman killing Zod. Sure, we're supposed to understand that he had no other choice and was in anguish about what he was forced to do. Problem is, Superman shouldn't have been in that position in the first place since, as I said, he already had Zod out of Metropolis beforehand only to come right smack down into the city again. Also, didn't he think about diverting Zod's face away from the family or covering his face? And how did Lois know exactly where Superman and Zod landed? Also, given the emotional gut-punch the scene had, having the next scene with Superman returning the drone be more or less light-hearted feels like emotional whiplash.

I know it seems like I'm really being harsh on this film, but again, there were parts of it I really liked. I think the idea of having Superman's origin be akin to a first contact/alien invasion story was clever, and I really liked how they told Clark's childhood via flashbacks. It's just once Clark put on the Superman suit, that's when everything about the film started to fall apart until logic and common sense was completely tossed aside for mindless spectacle. If the filmmakers had paid more attention on getting the script right as they obviously did on the visuals, this could've been a great film instead of an okay film with occasional, but far too few, moments of brilliance.
