The Rebooted "Keep Hope Alive" (that the rights can revert back to Marvel) Thread - Part 10

FOX probably thought they could get some kind of profit from Fant4stic, even though the movie was utter garbage.

I agree. And that just illustrates how clueless they are.

If the movie had been more faithful, it probably could have been profitable even if the overall quality was still bad.

Comic fans probably would have shown up for a faithful but bad film. But by thumbing their nose at us while also making a terrible film, they ensured nobody would show up.

And now they've squandered any opportunity they once had with the fans.

Now even a good, faithful film won't make money.

It made $709m on a $200m budget.

Most estimates I've seen put the production budget a good bit higher than $200 million, then you have to add the marketing budget which likely took it over $300 million.

And the $709 million is gross worldwide box office, not profit. Film studios get less than 45 % of the actual box-office.

It made back it's money and was considered an "okay" performance. But it didn't do nearly as well as they were expecting. So while it wasn't a failure it also wasn't a success.

On the idea that the leaked Fox FF plan is a negotiating tactic, there are three interesting timing details:

1. The last time Fox announced a reboot (and we all assumed - probably rightly so - that it was a negotiating tactic) was 2009 after their previous film (ROTSS) had been released in 2007. Now it's 2017 after Fant4stic was released in 2015.

2. Spider-Man Homecoming will be coming out soon, and it's likely to stir talk of similar cooperative deals.

3. Comic-Con and D23 are coming, but there's still time before they get here. Marvel would probably like to announce a deal at one of those big events if they can get one.

So I'm thinking more and more that the timing is telling us Fox is trying to open a door to get talks going with Marvel.

Who knows if they'll be successful, but I suspect that's why we're getting this rumor now.

According to an interview with on IO9, Feige is not expecting any additional announcements until after the 2019 Avengers film:

As for the rest of the films in Phase 4? Outside of Spider-Man, Feige doesn’t think any announcements will be made until after Avengers 4.

“I hope [the news comes] after that,” Feige said. “I think there will be certain elements that start to come about, not the least of which is the already announced release date of the next Spider-Man film. But other than that we’re going to keep it very close to the vest because this is really about focusing on the unprecedented conclusion to a 22-movie overarching narrative.”

I think the song for the FF going back to Marvel should be Don't Stop Believing by Journey. :yay:

PHASE FOUR -> FANTASTIC FOUR

The movies in P 4 should all connect to Fantastic Four similar to how the movies in Phase 1 were about bringing the Avengers together through SHIELD

That's what would happen in a perfect world. It won't going by Feige's words.

At this point, without any films announced (and with that apparently continuing through Comic-Con) they have complete freedom.

I wouldn't be surprised if they have two rough plans - one for if they can get the FF and related rights back and one for if they can't.

And all of their future films probably have a certain fluidity built in. Even if "Film X" has already wrapped, if they get the rights while they're editing, they could always shoot a quick after-credits scene to tack on.

My optimism may be tempered by recent statements, but I am still of the belief that Marvel needs something big to get the folks interested in the next phase of the MCU. We've been told that at least some of the fan favorite characters who we have followed through Phases 1 through 3 will be ending their journey in Avengers 4. So what's to keep the fans from growing up from these silly popcorn movies and start watching serious films like "Sad Less Famous Affleck Sibling: The Movie" (ie Manchester by the Sea)? I have to think the post credit scene will reveal something more exciting than a Maria Hill solo flick.

The Spider-Man deal was made in a couple of months so never say never, but damn if Kevin didn't temper my hope.

Apparently Marvel own Captain Britain. I have no idea why Marvel haven't tried to trade Captain Britain to Fox in exchange for the Fantastic Four. Fox lose a toxic asset in exchange for an Excalibur film which Fox would be far more interested in. Fox care about the X-Men. They don't care about the Fantastic Four. Marvel on the other hand would at least get the FF right for the first time.

Captain Britain existed before the X-Men, and he could easily be done separately from them. He could also join up with Black Knight if Marvel wanted to do their own medieval movie, especially since the two did team up very early on (when Cap Britain was killed in battle).

Fantastic 4 for Brian Braddock? That's sooo lopsided it's not even funny

Fantastic Four for Dazzler. Fox gives the FF back to Marvel in exchange for Marvel getting to make a Dazzler movie musical. :o

At the very least this should shut down those morons who complain that knowing the upcoming titles kills suspense for them. Some idiots even whined that knowing there is a Spider-Man sequel upset them because they know that there's no chance that Peter will die in IW. There are fans who are just too stupid to reason with. :whatever:

Everything being equal, sure it would seem lopsided, but from Fox's point of view, they'd be trading something they can no longer use and in return getting a character that they could make a profitable film with.

Meanwhile F4 and SS characters are getting deleted from the Marvel Heroes videogame. What a shame, what does Marvel get from continously raping these characters?

I think Fox has "raped" the characters a lot more. I've played the game a decent amount since it's come to console so it's a shame I won't be able to get Silver Surfer when the full game is released.

This also probably means that freaking rumor is true...jesus I think hope is really dead today.

Hope never dies! :nono:

Remember, this thread was started in the darkest of dark times. After Fox had announced Trank was directing and what would later be known as Fant4stic was moving full-steam ahead. The idea at the time was that was just a set-back and there was still hope for the eventual reversion after that.

If Fox announces today they have a script, director, and release date for Franklin and Valeria, I'll just start counting down the days until that bombs and shareholders demand management changes and Fox eventually gets it through their thick skull that we don't their crap.

He could be introduced in a Dr. Strange sequel and maybe even given a spin off after if he's well received. Though they could hust go with a solo Captain Britain first. Blade wasn't a big character until the movies. Though arguably Blade in the comics still hasn't enjoyed the success his movie counterpart has.

It continues to astonish me that FOX exited extensive year-plus long negotiations with Marvel with both extremely lucrative television rights and a contract to continue to hold the First Family hostage in perpetuity. Unbelievable.
