Exactly. Which is why it makes no sense at all when people complain that Superman's New 52 belt isn't functional. That's the point I was trying to make. It's not a valid criticism of the New 52 suit, because none of the elements of Superman's suit are functional, and that's ok.
For him to actually be able to use his cape like this it would have to be an extremely durable material. Only an alien armor could withstand that and still be flowing like a cape. And I don't consider this an essential or even desirable part of his character. I suppose you support the idea that his suit should be Kryptonian armor?
...well the suit IS Kryptonian. Maybe as said a self healing material? Should be advanced in some ways.
I don't support or defend any particular idea and I resemble those remarks.

just curious.
some observations:
In the TV show, the material could not be cut or burned or ripped or even soiled etc.
Odd that in MOS, Zods cape caught fire and he ripped it off. (dramatically) but Supermans cape did not catch fire but went through the same inferno.
JorEls suit was pierced by Zods blade so on Krypton the material is not impervious. Also the needle went through the suit when they took Sups blood. ( they could have taken from his neck )
All the explosions and fire and gravity waves etc did not harm or soil the suit.
I heard or read a long time ago, that maybe Superman generates a force field of sorts a few millimeters over the surface of his body protecting his suit... but then why did his human cloths get burned off in the oil rig?
...oh bother...
But I do agree that the suit is not essential to his powers, and the cape only as a very visible easy to see symbol.
( but then why could he all of a sudden fly when wearing the suit but not before ?...so may questions...)
Maybe in MOS they view the suit as a solar amplifier? Would be great if Zach would answer these Qs. I am sure they contemplated all.
I had a thought during the wait for MOS that they may do away with the cape as well as the trunks since it is not necessary to his abilities and could be a detriment...like Zod spinning him into space... (remember the Invincibles?)
essentially - I though there could be a scene that shows Kal first using the suit. He talks with Martha and tells her he is going to remove the cape since it is unnecessary. She tells him to keep the cape. It serves to be a "visible" symbol, a sign that people can see from far off and know there is hope. ...and it looks pretty cool too Clark !
...something along those lines.
