simply because no body seemed to know what they wanted to do with the film.

It's quite the contrary in my opinion after watching the doc about Superman Lives. There was only one who had (still has actually) no idea of what he was talking is Jon Peters.
At first you just think that guy is crazy with his silly ideas about the no flying thing or the polar bears, but then there is the cape of Superman idea... The guy is just plainly stupid.

Well hot damn

Not a bad looking suit, admittedly.

They hadn't actually finished the suit that was done for a test, to see how the colours worked.

The Cage suit was actually designed by Steve Johnson - the guy who designed "Species" and "Independence Day" aliens.

exactly.

everything that we saw in this documentary was in an unfinished process... yes, it was the extremely basic concept that they wanted, but nothing was even set in stone yet. they even imply that even though the script was going great (with the 2nd screenwriter), things were still in the air when it came to production designs.

the closest thing we come to seeing this in a type of "finished" product was when they started doing cgi flight videos

they knew what they wanted to make, but the materials that they needed to have in order to make their vision possible were not available to them at that time.
time and the lack of material is what killed this movie, i think

I'm not sure it was lack of materials that killed Superman Lives. I got the impression it was more lack of a unified vision. Peters and Burton seemed to want to emphasize different concepts and when nothing was solidified it just fell away.

The various costumes look cool but a bit too plastic for my taste, especially the cape, which gives me a fruit roll up or twizzler impression.

I actually think some of Burton's ideas are quite interesting. I liked the notion of K starting as a kind of teddy bear and being Kal-El's life-long companion, then helping him regenerate. I also think the notion of superman as the ultimate outsider would've been great to see on film.

I just finished Strick's script, though, and I didn't find it at all enjoyable. What Burton describes in the documentary doesn't come through in the script in the same way.

I think it's funny that people laugh at the project. Especially after seeing the documentary, Nic Cage and Burton were working on something really interesting.

The key reason it didn't go ahead was the budget, it's true what Peter's said budget, Burton and Cage but I think has the budget been lower it would definitely have gone ahead despite the reservations about Burton and Cage. Even with a $300 million budget maybe if WBs had been having hits instead of flops they might have green lit it.

admittedly i have only read one script (i think it was the Kevin Smith script, not sure though) and the script had no weight to it... not saying Smith cant screenwrite, but the story itself had no volume to it

i can agree that there was a lack of unified vision, but i still think the lack of technology to pull off what they wanted for their movie played a part in why the movie didnt make it... steve johnson came really close, though, with the overlapping suit idea he created.

i found that to be very cool

I actually liked Smith's script, it did need some structure to it but I liked his ideas.

I've read both Wesley Strick and Dan Gilroy's scripts, Gilroy basically just streamlined Strick's scripts and made a few changes (mostly to save on budget). Both are flawed but also have some good stuff in them. I think the whole Lex merging with Brainiac thing was an issue in those scripts.

There were definitely many factors that stopped this going ahead but I think WBs flops and the budget we're the primary reason. Without those obstacles I still think it would have gotten made.

i'm sure technology played a role in the demise as well, though i really liked the cgi flight tests. i thought those looked good.

though i was quite surprised to learn jon peters has been in over 500 street fight.

Burton wanted Sammy Davis Jr. to play Bettlejuice... Need I say more?

No doubt it would have been entertaining...if seen for free on late night TV. If I had paid to see that mess I would have wanted reparations!

Thank the gods we got the Snyder vision. :yay:

...and won all but 499. The 500th was against his great grandmother...
And it was a draw! (Her O2 ran out).

He should have stuck to hair dressing... Or salad dressing based on those images...

Ohhhh! :sly: :oldrazz:

Chances are we'd have still gotten Snyders vision years later still as this film would have been out years before even Superman Returns.

Yeah, it would've been about 8-9 years before Returns.

It's funny because I'm on the opposite side of the fence here; Burton and Cage wanted to tackle the isolation/alien aspect of the character, which was all good and well but they just didn't know how to go about it. Peters on the other hand knew exactly what he wanted to do, he wanted punisher the movie starring superman action figures. The dude was a loon!

I completely agree, especially when they mention that he put somebody in a headlock pretty much confirms everything that Kevin Smith said about Peters.

Superman isn't Superman without his hammock. I mean trunks.

...yeah...what is that thing? Bunched up Japanese looking thong.

...no BS, "it wasn't finished yet" ...you pin it in a way to depict how it "will be".

Yikes!

I would post an image but am fraidy scared.
Google, Men Japanese Underwear Rokushaku Fundoshi. Tradition sumo also.
Dead ringer.

It is a redickulas design, with the emphasis on the middle of the word...

...300 million...back then!

That's about 75 gazillion in today's money! Eeeech.

Seriously, that whole project set up looked like it was a bunch of kids saying, hey, let's make a movie in my dads garage...:sly:

As bad as SR was, Burton's film would've been even worse IMO, simply because no body seemed to know what they wanted to do with the film.
Nic Cage looked horrible as superman and suit, while alright for the time, looks like cheap cos-play compared to the MOS suit, which is perfection!
believe me, they know exactly what they want. a total makeover. they should have selected a black, like Samuel Jackson. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000168/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t8

Having just watched the death of superman lives. Im absolutely mortified to think that we could have gotten that turd of a film. What upset me the most was the way in which Burton and cage spent the entire costume test just mocking the superman we know and love. If you have no love for that character then stay away from him.
