BvS The Superman Suit Thread - Part 3

All I have to say here is that I like the new belt. The rest looks the same to me, but that's fine.

The only thing that brings out the muscles is the light, not the colour (which I still believe is the very same, at least for the blue), unfortunately Amir Mokri wasn't able to do that in MoS

Uh...well, I think the blue is a bit brighter in the BvS suit IMO. Even so, they seemed to have added definition into the suit itself. Lighting adds to it for sure, but the suit itself does a lot of it.

They definitely added more "padding" muscle definition to the new suit. Notice in the video of Cavill and Adams doing the cold water challenge. When Cavill is sitting you can see the padding fold down around his mid section right above his square belt buckle.

The problem is the exposure on the second one is completely messed up (not to mention the saturation with a red colour off the charts). It's not that hard to see it.

Oh yeah! Her costume is great too.

I've heard some people criticize it, calling it sexist and whatnot, but I disagree. It's supposed to be reminiscent of both Wonder Woman's traditional comic book suit and an Ancient Greek battleskirt, and it pulls both of those things off well. Now, if they would have went full comic book and had her running around in star-spangled undies... THEN I'd think those criticisms hold more weight.

That's really the trick. The goal of the costume designer isn't to make a design that just looks good for a "cosplay photo". The goal is to take it look good on camera. I'm betting they found the bigger S to be too much S while he was moving around.

Superman returns just had a small S. It was made even smaller due to how big Routh was and where the damn cape and collar were.

MOS they dropped that damn collar and cape back down. Seriously just doing that to the Returns suit would have made that S work a lot better. They made the S huge in terms of length, width, and the playing around with the proportions of the S. It has a huge center so when he's leaning backward or forward, the S is large and in charge.

Now for BVS they kept the width. This is why some folks are having difficulty telling the difference. This is important, this maintains this sense of scale. Now the height is shorter. I bet they felt the larger S from MOS was too damn large. They may have even had difficulty framing the shot due to it's size.

Looking at some screenshots, the S starts to kinda warp on his huge pecs. In other cases the S is so long that framing is a tad awkward.

So in BVS the S maintains it's width but sits on his pecs and not his pecs and abs. Then you got the benefits of lighting. You don't need to light his abs to light the S.

So potentially the larger 3D S is great for photos but not so great for video.

I read somewhere that they had to put the cape and collar up high to help hide how slim Routh was.

Ah yeah, I forgot about those pics. Still, he doesn't look anything like Superman. It just looks like Nic Cage in a Superman costume. Suit isn't terrible though.

But too Batmanish.

This review of the documentary has it in color...

How come that link's censored?

Anyone here actually seen the documentary yet?

It honestly looks better than what Singer came up with

This.

What belt?

can't see. it still has the classic belt and briefs. unlike MOS, left with a belt buckle only.
the similarities would be the fake abs, pecs & shoulders. all the fake muscles.

Well, it's just the elements and ideas that WB has recycled. I mean, if you've pumped so much money into the franchise, doesn't hurt to make use of something that didn't get fully realized on screen, including story elements. This extends up to Singer's film too, as I've come to understand it.

Anyway, the wrist band designs that Snyder uses are very much like that Cage suit.

I like how Superman's chest emblem looks here, perhaps more so than MOS.

Just like Batman's class oval emblem, can't go wrong with the classic \S/.

Is that one on the right real? Or a manip from the b&w photo?

Man, I really miss the MOS suit

Lol overreacting much? . There's almost no difference in the costumes. You guys are acting like we're getting the SR costume again. Get a grip.

This. The difference between the MOS and Batman v Superman suits are similar to those between the Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 suits.

Technically, there are many changes. But those changes are so small the suit really doesn't look all that different if you aren't looking for the changes.

Honestly..your reaction to ours was overreacting. We just said we prefer the Man of Steel suit. It's mostly the color and the fact that it looks like the muscles are on the suit instead of how they were in Man of Steel. It looks good on screen but in set photos it's a bit iffy.

No, not really overreacting, thanks. If you want to make out my preference of the original suit (which does have fairly distinct differences) as me 'not having a grip', then be my guest.

I'm really surprised how bright it is.

That's cuz Tim Burton really GETS Superman unlike that hack Zack Synder and his stoopid dark color filters, lulz. If only we could get Burton and Cage and Keaton and Lynda Carter to replace Synder and Cavil and Aflac and Gal Gabor.

I like it when the S proportions looks different depending on how Supes moves. It matches the comics that way. Also that way, you don't get tired of looking at it either. On the other hand the MOS S was a bit big. It was wide and in some shots and depending on how Cavill was positioned, example, in the interogation scene with Lois, "it's not an "S." Cavill is sitting, and somehow look skinnier. Some shots, he looks buff as hell though.

Just a matter of saturation here.

The colours didn't look that bright in those :

They look pretty damn bright in those

Yeah, the colors are still pop pretty good in those pics.

The trunks are weird, though. Too close to a banana hammock for my tastes.

He gets a certain type of Superman.

Oh, I'm sure he'd have "got" Superman, alright. Just like he got Batman. What with his Joker taking the place of Joe Chill in murdering Bruce Wayne's parents, dying after only one movie, and Batman's very lethal take downs of bad guys. Yep, Tim Burton is totally the 100% faithful to the comics type of guy, unlike Hack Snyder.

I said in my last post that we would need to see footage to judge the new suit. And now that it's here, I can say that I love it. In motion and when photographed properly by a professional cinematographer, it absolutely works.

The shield still looks big and imposing, even more so. The colors are definitely better. They even bloom in some of the day light shots. For people who were concerned about the excessive muscle definition and musculature, it looks very organic, like in the shot when he is walking into the court room. It looks like its a part of him and doesn't appear fake or put on in the slightest. And lastly they seem to have fixed another problem area that bugged a lot of people - the abs. The abs are now very well integrated into the design and again, look to be a part of him. Infact they seem have added some motion to them in post, like the image below, they seem to expand when he breathes - which just adds to the sense of realism.

I think this is the best live action suit of any superhero till date. MOS was the first go-around for them and they were able to take a great suit and better it for the second round. The only thing with the suit is, it lights up very differently in different lights. Like indoors it looks grey-blue, outdoors when lit by the sun it looks turquoise-blue. If they want to achieve a consistent color scheme, it is possible to achieve that in post. I am sure they know that so it might just be an intended effect. But the suit's perfect overall.

I feel like he's going to speak like a mobster named Joey with that gif.
