BvS The Superman Suit Thread - Part 3

I too feel that the new suit went way overboard on the fake muscle. The MOS suit struck a good balance--it enhanced Superman's physique, but was not so over the top as to be distracting.

As with the batsuit, the first thing that happens when I look at it is a voice in the back of my head shouting "Fake muscle!"

At least they're pretty to look at.

Regardless of how padded the suits are I'm sure Snyder put in a scene in the film with both our protagonists shirtless and covered in baby oil so that we suspend disbelief as much as we can.

Could someone please photoshop the 75th Anniversary animated short MOS Superman to look like the DOJ suit

I guess Im the only one who finds the idea of Superman wearing a sculpted muscle suit to be ridiculous.

Any padding should slightly compliment Cavills build... not create **** that aint there with padding. It more sculpted than the previous suit...

I love every bit of it! It looks like my Superman comics. Especially my favorite illustrated vision from Jim Lee in For Tomorrow and Hush. I guess I'm also bias bc I'm a gymrat and in love with transforming my exterior to mimic those illustrations. Part of why I am such a huge fan of Zack bc he so partial to showing off a well trained physique

While I like the cape, at the same time, I don't like the CGI just by the fact that it is purely noticeable and that it looks too sureal and majestic to be waving in such perfection. I mean in that shot where he is lifting a missile. That cape looks way bigger and longer than the actual cape is.

When Superman is hovering over the military "Don't play games with me, General."

You know the cape is CGI. It looks cartoony. Most shots during the Metropolis battle too, you notice. The movement looks too slow sometimes.

It reminds me of how poor the waving cape effect looked when playing the PS2 version of Superman Returns.

In the scene where Superman is walking out of the scoutship, all CGI. Except that one shot where Cavill is looking up in the sky right before he takes the big leap.

A real physical Cape does not look good in the movie though, for example..look at Thor's cape in most of his scenes in Thor and Avengers, it looks lifeless and adds nothing to the visuals.

The cape rendering technology has come a long way since Superman Returns, and even in SR, Singer did use CGI cape at times.

Hate to bring up comparisons between SR and BvS movies, mainly because the technology has improved considerably since 2006 and the fact that Snyder is a master of visuals as compared to Singer, still...

Look at how much difference a CGI cape makes, this is a similar scene with a real cape -

Fake muscles suit is alright in case of Batman though, we know he has to wear a protective armored suit and it helps him look intimidating, which is the whole point of wearing a Bat-Suit in first place.

Oh, Brandon...those little claret hotpants would have been too much for anybody.

This is how I feel too. And I thought Snyder went a little overboard with the last suit. If I remember correctly, he even had fake veins added in to really sell the effect of this being some sort of skin-tight suit. Given the character, I understand what they're going for. He's really one of the few characters who conceptually wears a tight suit (if he actually wears it under his street clothes).

Batman less so. So, the Batsuit looks a little funny to me because Snyder did the same thing, but a little different. It's a bit too close to the Schumacher approach for my tastes. Pretty much a modern version of that minus the nipples and a different body type.

Hold you're tongue!! :cmad:

I mean MAYBE the Supersuit is a little molded-muscle heavy (I still don't think it's that bad), but I think it needs to go that route more than the Reeves/Routh route. Superman should look muscular and powerful - like in the comics to a degree. As for Batman, I don't feel the suit looks too molded really at all. Yes, there are muscles showing, but Batman is also suppose to be a muscular and powerful looking guy. I don't see anything wrong with the suit at all. Comparing it to the Schumacher version (even Burton) is just unfair in my mind. The Batfleck suit DOES NOT look even remotely similar (other than having a cowl, utility belt, cape, etc.) to the Schumacher suit below....

I don't see this at all.

The DOJ Batman wears a presumably high tech cloth (maybe Kevlar or Spider silk weave ((I know - Spider-Man))) OVER a set of armored/protective pads-sorta like a hockey/football player wears a jersey over his protective pads although smaller and more refined. (You can see the shoulder pads etc.)

I don't think Schumacher was trying to convince us that these suits were skin tight and those were Clooneys real muscles... we all know better.:cwink: (as if there were no protection ala comic book style, but he was going for the old roman/greek armor look- helps the outa shape generals look cool.

Sorry you guys don't see it as I do. :hehe:

But, when I see the muscle, shading, and veins, I just think of a modern Schumacher suit taken even further to depict the male human anatomy in greater detail.

I'm not saying that Schumacher wanted people to view his suits as if they were skin tight material. I know he was going for that Greek statue look (I think he said this in one of the BTS videos). But, it is the closest thing I've seen on film with suits that essentially looked like how theses characters are drawn as times. Almost naked and whatnot. Snyder's suits go further with that to me.

Snyder's Superman reminds me of a more expensive version of something like this...

Muscles coming through, some veins, etc.

Snyder's Batman is essentially Miller's TDKR suit in the style of Jim Lee. The dude even has his muscles of the forearm "showing through" his gloves like Lee draws him.

So I don't think I'm understanding you...are you for Snyder's Superman suit, but not for his Batman suit? Your last post seemed to contradict what I thought you had posted originally.

Not exactly for/against either one. There are things and ideas that I like and dislike about each. In the end, not the looks I would go for though.

Well since the new video of the suits came out I grabbed a screenshot of Superman's shield. Can any of you geniuses out there decipher what is written on his shield? I'm very curious...
QbyBsRZ.jpg

:wow: that is too cool! How have I not noticed that yet?!

What would you go for?

For Superman, something more classic. Yes, even with the trunks (If they really felt a need to justify it, he's an alien. Their culture is different from ours). Actually depict it as a two piece suit. Shorter cape (I don't like how they have his cape touch the floor). Maybe even using the Fleischer style \S/ shield. The "steel" look is a pretty cool idea.

For Batman, something like the Young Justice toon design. I was actually hoping for something like that based on Wilkinson's work on Tron: Legacy. I like the use of blue more than black. Something like the blue used in Batman & Robin.

Well, you're entitled to your opinion. Personally, I don't see how anyone could dismiss how beautiful these suits are.

To each his own...everyone has personal preferences.

In the end, the filmaker needs to choose what he thinks best represents his vision.
We have seen the more cartoony versions, campy styles in the past, and they were fun and funny for their time and style.

Put those styles into real world situations, realistically depicted and No one would take it seriously IMO.

I for one am happy that we are getting a more "realistic" approach with this Superman/Batman etc.

I'm one of those guys who appreciates at least some aspects of the new when it comes to suits of my favorite superheroes (be it Batman, Spidey or Supes), they rarely bother me lately since designers already learned from past mistakes and certain standards need to exist from the get-go, I appreciate the evolution; and they just made this one infinitely cooler by putting kryptonian letters inside the S.
