The Dark Knight Rises The TDKR Batsuit Discussion Thread V

I really don't think the TDK suit was that bad. It was Nolan trying to make his own realistic version of the suit, which I liked. The only thing I didn't like was the lack of emphasis on the bat symbol. I hope on the next one, its more pronounced. Also, even though I liked the suit, the next one does need to have some improvements. Just another scene with Fox showing Bruce the new upgrades he has for the suit. Because like others have said, in real life, Batman would constantly be updating his suit with new improvements.

Looks pretty damn good. I mean the manip is flawed, but the idea and the look is ace. Very Frank Miller-y.

Why on earth could Lindy Hemming not pull of something like that...

They over-think the realistic concept of Batman's suit waaay too much.

Will you marry me? This is perfect!!!

Well... i would make cape and cowl into one using CGI, but its 99,999% perfect for me.

I used my crappy skills and MSPaint to mess around with the mouth opening and made the slit sharper. Its just that i dont like the opening to be V shaped like in Arkham Asylum for example. I hope you dont mind Jak.

Would you do that by changing the surface of the cowl into the same material as the cape? Couldn't you just make a fabric cape and cover for the cowl that you could just glue on to a rigid cowl piece get the same effect?

I would make cape and cowl from the same material. I think that rubber is the way to go for the cowl. Its rigid and has a nice look for it, so i guess i would make the cape from some sort of rubber material and erase the seam with CGI. The cloth cape looks like a towel anyway.

I would also find a CGI solution to the neck problem. I dunno, maybe leave it uncovered so that the actor can move his neck and then cover it with CGI?

Wouldn't a rubber cape be too heavy to blow in the wind and uncomfortable to wear for the actor? Also, I don't see the need to use CGI to erase the seem, because it's expensive and gets little done. If you're going to make them out of the same material and you want to make them one piece, you might as well make them one piece practically. I thought you guys wanted a fabric Batsuit? Wouldn't a rubber cape and cowl stick out like a sore thumb?

Here's where you lose me. Just give the suit a real-world capacity to move freely. I don't want the complications of matting out seems in every Batman scene; that seems like a hazardous approach that could backfire.

I like the helmet approach in TDK. It's innovative, it makes the head appear more protected like a motorcycle helmet, and the size of it gave Batman an animalistic quality.

It didnt look that way in Superman Returns. That was a pretty nice material for a cape. I'm sure there are tons of similar materials that they could try for even better results.

I dont care about the logistics, i just want it to look cool. Even when they used the practical suit for Ironman, they used CGI later to polish it and make it look like metal (it was plastic).
If you're going to make them out of the same material and you want to make them one piece, you might as well make them one piece practically.
If that is possible, then hell yeah!

We want a flexible batsuit but it doesnt have to be like a sweater or nolan's cape. Personally i'd like a material like on Superman's (SR) or Spiderman's suits, just thicker and tougher looking.

Actually it made Batman look like his head was a ball. His face was burried under a ton of rubber, and somewhere between those massive rubber cheeks a tiny little mouth emerged.

I made a manip of my own. I rearranged the pads a little bit and went with a more practical design.

I personally liked how non-human it looked. The overwhelming presence it gave by burying the man in rubber... made Batman seem more like a bat then a man. Bales down-low fighting posture eccentuated this effect, and it went with the headpiece IMO. And if I were trying to strike fear into the hearts of villans everywhere, that's the approach I'd use. Less human... more bat.

I felt that way in Begins where he looked huge and in the darkness he kinda looked like a monster. However there was no scene in TDK where the suit's pads didnt distract me, blatantly stating that he's just a man in a fancy suit.

He did not look like a bat. He looked like a bobble-headed man in armor made from a jigsaw puzzle. The previous headpiece actually looked inhuman, musculature was added on the neck to make it look organic. The cape draped over him like when a bat sleeps. The previous suit had characteristics of a bat. This new one looked like a turd.

If you say so. When Batman asked Joker "why are you trying to kill me" and he tilted his head to the side.. it was very animalistic to me. The BB head piece was impractical, and it felt more like a constructed rubber piece than the TDK headpiece to me.
And if you have a better way of detaching the headpiece froom the neck so Batman can have free movement... then great. Again, I like the helmet because it felt practical, it made him look more animalistic in my mind, and it's a good way to show strong head protection, which would be absolutely necessary.
I don't like matting out the costume with SFX, because I question whether it'd be a distraction. I do agree with others though that the jigsaw leg pieces should be revised.

That's what I love about it!

Ironically, I've heard a lot of complaints about the Superman Returns cape, mostly that it looked like a shower curtain (which is amusing to me since you and JAK said that Nolan's Batsuit cape looked like a towel), and it wasn't lightweight enough. In fact, I suggested a cape like Batman's cape in the Man of Steel Costume Thread, and it seemed to be pretty well received.
Here is the post in question, if you want to see for yourself:
Well, the tiny s pattern gave the suit texture. Otherwise it could end up looking flat and uninteresting. I do think the suit needs a lightweight cape, like the the Batsuit's cape in the Nolan films, so it can blow in the wind.

I dont care about the logistics, i just want it to look cool. Even when they used the practical suit for Ironman, they used CGI later to polish it and make it look like metal (it was plastic).

That makes sense.

If that is possible, then hell yeah!

I have no idea if it is.

For the Batsuit itself, I could go with that.

I really don't get why you think that The Dark Knight Batsuit looks like Megatron. A soldier/SWAT team member? Maybe. But a robot? You lose me there.

Agreed.

I always felt that the cowl should be either a dense kevlar/nano fiber makeup, or at least a hard/rigid sculpt, not rubber. Maybe even a hard non-shiny plastic/urethane/resin piece (like how we saw in BB with the cowl test, something that would crack rather than tear in terms of composition).

Nolan's cape billows beautifully but it really feels like a towel not only because of its material, but because the rest of him is rubber.
For the Batsuit itself, I could go with that.

I like to exaggerate sometimes. It was tongue in cheek really. :woot:

They should use whatever material Nite-Owl's cape was made of.
