Considering they make fun of the costumes themselves in the movie and the fact that Watchman picks apart superheroes, that's not quite a good example to use.
Meh, they managed to pull it off nonetheless... what is that avatar of your's anyway?

What "practical" purpose does the chest logo serve?

Pretty simple, symbolism for the character, and as far as I remember the whole idea when adding the yellow oval was to have it be a target for criminals so if they did shoot batman, it would be where he's most protected with armor.

No it doesn't.

It wasn't tiny.

Look at it in relation to the size of the chest.

It was just the same color as the rest of the suit.

Look at it in comparison to the BB suit:

It shrank considerably.

The TDK logo looks dumb.
While I don't think it looks dumb, I honestly do prefer the BB emblem.

Oh I definitely agree it was pulled off, but not what I want for Batman; Watchmen gives me peace of mind for Superman's costume.

My avy is the sexy Beast, Nicholas Hoult. :oldrazz:

Batman himself is the symbol and his entire suit is the armor. There is no practical need for the logo. Nolan thought the same thing, but thankfully someone talked him out of the idea of not putting a logo on the chest... now if we could just see the damn thing.

Yeah, didn't Goyer make that abundantly clear in the first movie? There wasn't much in the way of subtlety in the symbolism of that screenplay.

I see your point scot, I thinks it's one thing that people would go mad about If the symbol was removed from the suit, I love the symbol and it's been part of the character since his creation. When it comes down to it, along with the trunks the symbol was the norm after superman was unveiled and everyone wanted to follow suit.

if you watch the movies...then you can see it

to add to the random thing said earlier...the cape has an obvious purpose...he glides with it...the symbol has a purpose...its a symbol...its a popular thing...trunks arent all that popular lol...the trunks have what purpose? to hide buttsweat? idk...doesnt have any purpose at all....in any way except to please those who hold the comic design dearly

Batman glides on his cape because Nolan/Goyer decided that that was an acceptable way to explain the cape's inclusion in the costume. They could have made similar choices for a visible symbol or even trunks if they had wanted to.

Keep in mind the suit it self shrunk too, probably making it four inches shorter.

The oval was first introduced in 1964 to resemble the bat signal, and for trademark reasons.
It wasn't until 1986 that Frank Miller made up the target reasoning in The Dark Knight Returns.

That's strange I swear Denny O'Neil mentioned it in an interview once which would be pre-Frank Miller, I'll hafta look for the interview.

It shrank by maybe an inch on both sides.

Hardly "tiny," which is what you said.

Well, specific dimensions may not agree, but the impression I got--and I'm sure I'm not alone--was that it shrank considerably, and for no good reason.

I also kind of wish we could go back to the BB cowl. I'd prefer TEH PUFFY to that silly motorcycle helmet we got. I hated how it made his jaw look huge.

I get what you mean. And I know the logo is rungs above trunks; hell the trunks may not even be on the ladder. But once you get the idea of wearing undies over tights out of your head a very simple solution presents itself. That being said, all this trunk nonsense is predicated on a gray or at least grayish batsuit... I couldn't give a flick about trunks on a blackity black costume.

The armor has been underneath the suit since at least 1940; that the oval was intended as a target was introduced by Miller.

Saw this on DeviantArt. I actually kinda like the Batman look on this one. The blue and grey looks better than I thought it might ... and the bat is bigger. Anyone know of a better shot of this batsuit?

Looks pretty cool, though Power Girl ruins it for me personally.
