The Dark Knight Rises The TDKR General Discussion & Speculation Thread (NOT A LOUNGE) - - Part 57

I don't think anyone is debating that. It was definitely a game-changer... just look at TAS (and before you mention Begins, it didn't have the proper acclaim until it's sequel to influence the rest of the genre IMO and this is coming from a Begins lover).

Oh Darkhunt... Come on.

There are plenty of people on here who don't think TDK is Game-changing, revolutionary or anything more than a Good film.

The Dark Knight is probably my favorite superhero movie at the moment, but I'm not too excited for TDKR for some reason. I just popped over here from The Avengers board to see what's up with this film. Hopefully something comes along to get me truly stoked for this movie, but so far? Not really.

Do you think the snobs at the Academy would have given it to him if he lived? Nomination yes, but win? I would be shocked. He was definitely the best supporting performance of the year, but somehow I think they would have screwed him out of it if he was alive.
I like to think so, yes. But I can't commit to hypotheticals.

I think even a nomination would have been a huge triumph for the film and the genre. Winning was the bittersweet icing on the cake.

I always wondered if there was a JL movie could it have some kind of vague continuity with the Nolan films. Like never showing Alfred or Bruce's face and having a similar performance so that this "could" be the Nolan Batman. And been set some time between the movies (probably BB and TDK).

I remember around 06 or so they said they were going to make a teen titans film and I thought, if they touch on Robin's origin how are they going to fit that in with the Nolan films? Like, they could have a brief flashback of Dick at the circus and a second long cameo of Bale meeting him. But never mention him in the Nolan films of course.

Don't worry, you'll change your tune in about a week or two.

I think this may have to do with what they've shown us... which is next to nothing. Many images, no context. Back in April '08 we knew a lot more about that film than we do about TDKR.

Yeah I know that was not the debate and that being a game-changer or not has nothing to do with ones opinion of the movie. :yay:

While other director are flocking towards the digital format, Christopher Nolan is the first to shoot half of a feature film in IMAX. As far as filmmaking is concerned, that could be considered "game-changing."

Okay, we're starting to get too liberal with game changing here (I'm starting to reavaluate my Avengers statement, what I meant was more for DC and WB to reavaluate their own films in favor for Marvel's success and from a comic book film standpoint, it's historical). Game changing, at least how I see it, is someone taking something new and it effects the entire industry for the better. Star Wars being a prime example. It's takes something huge to be game changing. Shooting something partially in IMAX isn't as game changing. It's just something that hasn't been to tell a story in a unique way done and has been successful that a couple other directors have done. Game changing creates earthquakes within the industry and everyone feels it.

Sorry. Sometimes I like to pretend this place has dignity, it helps justify staying here to myself. :BA

It's game changing in its superficial novelty of all the heroes from different franchises (but still under the Disney/Marvel banner) coming together into one film. But that speaks nothing to the structure of the film. The heroes argue; the villain wants world domination; the heroes settle their differences and finally work as a team in that crucial moment; the villain loses. No matter how well made they may be, it is still very much within convention. A true game changer challenges conventional structures, flips it on its head. For example, No country for old men was a game changer for thrillers. One could say watchmen was a game changer for the comic book genre. I just don't see Avengers challenging structural norms.

Fair enough.

I don't think you can truly tell if a film is "game changing" until at least a decade after it is released, maybe even longer.

When they Reboot the popular Spider-man to basically be film 1 in your trilogy... I think you can be considered a game changer

This thread is so game-changing.

Marvel seems to be in good shape. DC? Not so much. Once Nolan is done, Batman goes into hibernation and WB will be forced to get their act together with different DC characters. Superman could turn out good, or could be yet another trainwreck for the franchise.

Don't bet on that. The next Batman film will be out from 4 to 5 years. No hibernation. I wouldn't be surprised by the end of the year we're already hearing of the reboot. By next year, we could get a director.

Batman is their prime source of money. They're not gonna let that go for too long. And if Superman fails, well, we're just going to get more Batman.

Even the people who don't like it should be able to acknowledge that The Dark Knight was very important and significant for the comic-book movie genre in many ways.

Maybe it's a game changer in the sense that it takes what comic book movies typically do well and takes it to another level.

TDK was a game changer in the sense that it took the comic book movie genre and went in another direction.

Both game changers in their own right.

Could be, but let's not toss these words around lightly. They did create quite an effect on the standards of comic book films. I mean it pretty much is seen as the standard now.
