First off, saying the Stadium scene doesn't work for you because you know Hines Ward as a real football player is like saying you won't like the John Blake character because you know a cop that is named John Blake.

As for the Avengers v.s. Batman debate, I'm not really worried about it.

The Avengers is just big because it is the first time all these heroes are together in one place. But think about how successful they were apart from each other?

CAPTAIN AMERICA: Opening Weekend: $65,058,524 (USA) (24 July 2011)
THE INCREDIBLE HULK: Opening Weekend: $55,414,050 (USA) (15 June 2008)
HULK: Opening Weekend: $62,128,420 (USA) (22 June 2003)
IRON MAN: Opening Weekend: $98,618668 (USA) (2 May 2008)
IRON MAN 2: Opening Weekend: $128,122,480 (USA) (7 May 2010)
THOR: Opening Weekend: $65,723,338 (USA) (6 May 2011)

THE DARK KNIGHT:
Opening Weekend: $158,411,483 (USA) (20 July 2008)

The only one to even come close was the Iron Man movies.

So what makes people think all of them together will be earth-shattering?

Either way, the computer generated feel of Avengers will never compare to me to Nolan's more practical ways. Avengers has Joss Whedon... TDKR has the Nolan's and Wally. 'Nuff said.

I think Avengers is going to be a blast and a fun movie, don't get me wrong. It will definitely hit some numbers. I'm going to see both. Even Spider-Man. But they won't raise philosophical questions, it will be super heroes with extraordinary powers fighting evil and blowing **** up. ...I think The Dark Knight Rises will be an amazing film that will make us think, proposes questions and maybe answers a few, featuring a hero that has no super power fighting a true terrorist and blowing **** up.

What Nolan is doing with Batman is something that has never been done before and a way that has never been this good. The Avengers is nothing really new... just the first time these characters are together on screen.

Watched that one recently. Depressing as hell. :csad:

Concerning Blue Valentine;
It was, but magnificent. I loved that it took a realistic approach to love/divorce. it might not be anyone's "fault", some people just fall out of love between each other and change as humans. It's easy as that, that that idea was beautiful.

By the way, why did EW not speak much of Gordon. They didn't even list him under Batman's allies. Thought that was weird...

I wouldn't fault anyone (to their face :woot: ) if they wanted to see "The Avengers" more than "The Dark Knight Rises". But if I put my personal, lifelong love for the character aside, I would base my feelings on the previous films as I hope others would.

IMO the "Iron Man" movies were both great with much thanks to that due to Robert Downey Jr. On the other hand, the other Avengers character films were just pretty decent for me. Putting those together doesn't get me as excited as I want to be. Nolans Batman films though? More than superior in every way. He's been knocking 'em out of the park for the most part.

But but......Nolan's films have no color!!!!!

I can imagine two movie studio guys going over this in a dream within a dream:

MarvelDude: Pfft Nolan. You’re still working that stick in the mud?
NolanFella: He’s good at what he does right?
MarvelDude: Oh, he’s the best, but his films have no color.
NolanFella: Not like yours.
MarvelDude: Listen, if you’re going to shoot for an Oscar, you need color.

I'd be eager for you to explain to me how another director has done what Nolan has done for Batman in cinema.

I guess I deserve that though, I should have said "in cinema" but I thought since this is a forum about movies I figured it was implied.

Prometheus/Batman. Batman/Prometheus....I'm just glad i'm alive to be able to make that choice. I win either way.

I'd be eager for you to explain to me how that is not true.

Gladly. Nolan himself would tell you he took a big page out of Richard Donner's playbook for Batman Begins, and he would also tell you that Tim Burton's Batman movies were similar quality to his and also had a pretty big influence on him as well.

How about we all cool it for now and check out the manip thread. I added a few artwork done by some amazing people.

Nolan is simply unmatched by his contemporaries when it comes to the superhero film genre. He is the one doing the most trailblazing at this point. Everyone from Raimi to Singer to Favreau have said that he raised the bar for the genre

He certaintly owes something to the the Donner and Burton films, but he has taken the ball and ran with it, farther than anyone expected.

Oh. I thought he meant the fact he's ending it hasn't been done before, not that the overarching concept of his trilogy wasn't inspired by other works. My mistake.

Nah, just would be nice if people appreciated their history as much as Nolan does. Just saying.

Yeah, that's what it finally took for Marvel. It's not about realism or what other post-2000 comicbook film jargon...

It's about how much these studios, directors, and writers care for the material, the characters, the themes, motives, and style of the world.

Singer and Raimi got close, but Nolan perfected that. And, now Marvel has been following the road. It's an awesome time we are in. The failures like F4 and such were because they didn't care. They just wanted a quick buck...

And then we have Green Lantern...

I think Superman is one of, if not only character who could have both Nolan's social commentary and the MCU's epic action in one film, IMO.

But they really don't know what to do with Superman, sadly.
