im not in that boat but i do want it to be the best batman film which begins currently holds the title of

I was dissapointed when I first saw TDK that is wasnt the sequel to Begins I was expecting it to be, but I have come to love it more over the years and can concede it probably could be a better movie.

I was obsessed with Begins when it came out, it was so magic to me, it really captured the spirit of the comics. And I knew TDK would have a different atmosphere and be more epic. Nothing could have lived up to the hype, I was checking all the sites every day for TDK info and dreaming about it.

In some ways it was both better and worse than I expected. I never thought Joker would have such a emotional/philosophical side to his duel with Batman, I just thought he would be a mastermind taking over the city's crime and Batman would outwit him.

On the other hand, I loved the relationship with Bruce and Ra's and how they went from pupil/mentor to rivals, and I thought the emnity with Batman and Joker would be just as emotionally involving and powerful and it was between Bruce and Ra's, or more. But I never really felt it. Batman hated Joker and Joker wanted to prove to him the city was evil, but it kind of felt cold. I thought the city proving itself to Joker was more powerful than anything Batman did. But the film as a whole is awesome of course.

Still though.. the similarities are obvious and present lol

The reason they are both great is because of the similarities and the differences. Batman Begins is the better Batman film, TDK is the better film.

Theres just something I cant define..I loved the exotic kind of feel of Begins, but I also loved how TDK was right into a real city, but I thought it missed a bit of that adventure/exotic feel that Begins had at times. Begins was more personal wheras TDK was more epic and city-spanning. Clearly TDKR will have elements of both with the real crime drama feel and the foreign/ancient looking jail in the trailer. I think it will tie the two "feels" together to end the story.

That sentiment has never made sense to me. Both are films about Batman, both are "Batman movies". The better film is the better film.

I personally found BB made you identify with Bruce and feel "right there with him" while TDK was more distant watching his pain and how he was driven to be "a monster". Which was powerful and imo the best way the story could have gone but also made me feel more kind of distant and not like him as much.

And I think also TDK didnt have as many cool Batman moments like "swear to me" and the like. Again because Batman was poweful and in control in begins and overwhelmed and scared by a new enemy in TDK. Which was more powerful for the story but less effective in making Batman look cool. Im sure TDKR will bring the audience back to Bruce though.

My expectation for TDK was that Batman would start the movie in the place he was at the end of BB, and that Joker would be the most cunning crime boss he faced, and that he would end the movie "on top of things" and ruling Gotham having defeated Joker. IE Another "Batman gets more poweful" story like Begins was. I didnt realise he would begin the movie "on top of things" and that Joker would bring him down and crush all his (and mine) beliefs that he could sort out Gotham with his crime fighting. Basically where he was at the start of TDK is how I thought he would end TDK...I guess that imagination lack is why I am no Nolan :whatever:

If this is a main paralell between Begins and Rises, then this is a nice twisted version of a callback. Ra's goes to Bruce, unguided and lost, in a jail to free him; Bane goes to Bruce, broken and bloody, to mock him. Ra's is dressed to kill, figuratively; Bane is rough hewn and barbaric. Ra's plays the father figure who molds Batman out of Bruce, intentionally or unintentionally; Bane seeks to annihilate Batman and leave nothing but a broken man in his shadow.

And something else that's kind of cool if this theory of Bane tossing Bruce into the same prison where he was kept as a child is true. When Ra's came for Bruce, Ra's pulled some strings to release him. If Bruce escapes imprisonment the same way that Bane did, it's him proving that he is just as tough as Bane is.
