The Dark Knight Rises The TDKR General Discussion & Speculation Thread (NOT A LOUNGE)

I don't know, it's a very hard question to answer.

On one hand we were hearing he was shooting a lot and felt a lot of it was critical, so there wouldn't be a lot of deleted scenes (not that there ever were)

but on the other hand we have the idea of shooting a three hour film and what that means for showtimes in theaters.

If it is three hour, there's no way they're going to ask him to cut it down.

It's a matter of what Nolan shot and what he's keeping, which is very hard to tell at this very moment.

If this film is 3 hours, critically, Nolan will get ripped for it. Some felt Knight was too long. Crazy talk, I say.

There were rumors of splitting the film???

Silly rumors.

TDK wasn't long enough. A lot of scenes, especially in the third act, were rushed because of time. I feel it would've benefited a lot with 10 more minutes.

I think he was referencing the "fatty" script, not the shooting script.

Yeah, still this is something to consider...

Yes but this is the END, the last one and there's a lot to do, I think for this kind of film 3 hours is worth it.

3 hour movie means you can kiss a shot at the opening weekend record goodbye.

Not disagreeing at all. The film will be as long as it needs to be. I'm cool with however long the film is.

Cue all the people who say IMAX can't run over 2:45 :o

it's opening in 600 theaters...

some of the midnIGHT SHOWINGS ARE ALREADY sold out. it has a chance even at 3 hours of breaking the record.

Wally Pfister said "It’s a phenomenal script. He’s still in the process of cutting it back because it’s a very long script right now, but it’s really phenomenal." Don't know about greater details...

Oh, I agree with you. I would have preferred no music at all, also. Its just that I find that small snippet of music being included as random. Its like they were servicing something by having it in there. Should have stuck with what they were going for in the rest of the scene and not included that random bit of music. I guess, they needed something to add to the epicness of the Batpod bursting out of the tumbler but couldn't think of a good way to stop the music so they just clipped it off with the breaking sound effect when the Batpod tore the mirror off. It just felt sloppy right there.

Ah, I see what you mean. Eh, it doesn't bother me (I didn't even realise it until you said :funny:), but I totally get where you're coming from.

Yeah, it is a very very minor thing in context.

You loose sessions when a film is three hours long, unless of course cinemas are going to run 24 hours over the weekend, which I find unlikely.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/dark-knight-rises-pg-13-rating-309633

  1. The rating means Dark Knight Rises is completely finished — sound and score included — more than three months before its July 20 release date. That’s an unusual accomplishment for an epic tentpole movie these days. Most are finalized just weeks before their release. The Amazing Spider-Man, which opens July 2, doesn’t have a rating yet, nor does Prometheus, the Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi film set to open June 8. It also means the cut of the movie screened by Nolan for top Warners brass March 16 was far from a rough print and was close to his final version. The timeline highlights how efficient Nolan is as a filmmaker.
  2. The early rating also fires the starter pistol for the most aggressive phase of Warners' marketing plan, according to sources. As a follow-up to a movie that grossed $1 billion worldwide, hit status for Rises seems inevitable. But Warners clearly isn’t leaving anything to chance. With three months to go and a ratings label in hand, Warners will be able to hone its message with laser-like focus. It also means the studio will be able to start screening the movie for taste-makers and critics. If it chooses to, of course.
  3. Finally, TDKR scored its rating for “intense sequences of violence and action, some sensuality and language.” The 2008 movie was considered envelope-pushing for its intensity — some parents were left wondering why the Batman movie hadn’t been rated R — and the rating leaves no question that audiences can expect the same with the new movie. But by singling out “sensuality” in the label, the ratings board might be indicating that this movie has something new to show about the caped crusader. It might also preview a more emotional side of Nolan, whose films have been described more cerebral than emotion-filled.

The Arclight in Hollywood went 24 hours for Revenge of the Sith but, you're right. The average theatre won't do 24 hours.

I understand what you were saying, I'm saying that while that is a fact, the film is opening much larger than TDK and it's already sold out in some places. so it's still possible.

But it's only possible if it has the same number of sessions available to it that TDK had. Between 2hrs 30min and 2hr 45min you can still fit in at least 5 sessions per day, once you start creeping up to 3 hours though cuts you down to about 4. If Rises was of a similar length to TDK then yes I would agree it has a shot at taking back the opening records although it would still be difficult because of big the HP box office was. But at 3 hours? No chance.

I care much more about the lasting legacy of this movie. Plenty of trash has broken records, only greatness has beaten the test of time.
