The Dark Knight Rises The TDKR General Discussion & Speculation Thread - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Part 31

I posted this in the prologue thread, but everyone there is still arguing about fact vs. opinion when it comes to film. So I'm posting this here, hope no one minds...

Did anyone else feel like the prologue edit must have been rushed? I mean, there were some weird mistakes in there that I doubt Smith or Nolan would have normally done.

My biggest complaint would be the shot they added after Bane says "Crashing this plane". The first one where the men are rappelling down is fine, but the second shot of the plane's exterior (wing mounted) was really out-of-place and overly long. Besides, does that mean Bane stood there staring at the CIA Agent for the whole time in between "Crashing this plane... with no survivors"?

Another issue I feel should be addressed is the strange double explosion when Bane's men blow out the back of the smaller plane. They should start with the interior shot and cut to the exterior, imo. Not replay it.

And lastly, when Bane says "With no survivors", they cut to a shot of the CIA agent's men being shot from the side. However, when they cut to the exterior of the plane, Bane's men are just landing on the side and getting ready to shoot.

Any thoughts?

Anyone else kinda bummed we're not seeing/hearing much about Freeman/Fox?

I think Happy Jack's avatar is the rumored sex scene between Bruce and Selena... I would quote the gif but I dont know how to do that. Just go back a page and he made a post...

Yeah, I am. I mean, nothing is set in stone obviously, but him not being featured in the recent trailer isn't a very good sign he makes it out of this trilogy alive.

Like even in the fanart discussion, no one is including him in ANYTHING, kinda bums me because I kinda like him more than Alfred, and Alfred is cool as all get out!

Hey guys, long time lurker, first time poster.

Been doing a bit of thinking about the overall story of this trilogy and thought I'd share my thoughts on what I think it's all about and where it might be heading.

I've seen people describe the three movies in the context of thesis, antithesis and synthesis and I agree with that.

I feel that in Batman Begins evil is allowed to flourish because fear stops good people from doing anything about it. Bruce puts forward the proposition (thesis) that fear need not be the cause of suffering, and that it can actually inspire good, and so he creates Batman. And at first he is successful in stopping evil using this symbol of fear.

In TDK the Joker proposes that fear can be used to inspire evil, not good (antithesis). The two ideologies lock horns for the whole movie and eventually come to a stalemate, with no real winner. We are left with the notion that fear can inspire both good and evil, but neither is really right.

In TDKR I believe that Bane will try to resolve this clash of ideas with a new proposition (synthesis), that fear should not be used to inspire anything, but will will be used as a means of control- enforce good. Both Batman and Joker create symbols that seek to inspire. In other words they set an example and allow others to make the choice as to which direction they will follow. Bane will seek to to take that choice away.

I believe Bruce will at first see this as a bastardisation of his own principles, but will eventually learn a powerful lesson from what Bane does; that fear can not be used to inspire, only enforce. Knowing this I think he will shed the symbol of fear he created and replace it with a symbol of hope, hence seeing Batman operating the daylight where everyone can see him, rather than hiding in the shadows.

By the end I predict that he will abandon the Batman persona completely (seeing it as ultimately a well meaning failure) and instead protecting the city as Bruce Wayne- an inspiration for good.

Anyway that's what I think could happen, but I could be way off base about everything in TDKR. What do you think?

I wanted to see Freeman in the trailer, but his absence does not necessarily mean that his character (Lucius Fox) will die in the movie.

You have some good points. I felt too the editing and geography was really sloppy at times.

I'm okay with the double-explosion of the plane. Common editing technique to really draw out a beat, such as that-- and to reestablish geography within the plan.

I figure that the guys are being shot as the men rappel in, so that's why you get them sorta landing, but good point nonetheless.

My main problem was just some of the editing in terms of establishing stuff.

For example, when the CIA Agent says Dr. Pavel for the first time, this is in a rather wide medium shot from the side with 4 characters in the frame, any of which could be Dr. Pavel. Would've been nice to cut to a close up or med shot of Pavel walking up as the CIA's line plays from him to the cut of Pavel walking up so we can identify him.

Two, think we needed an insert of the cuffs being broken by Bane -- however, in IMAX a close up may feel a bit weird.

Three, we needed a clear medium shot of Bane and his two flanking henchmen, just to establish that they're in there. However,e since it's unclear whether or not they dropped the first guy...I don't know. But something to establish what the heck was going on there, since the 3rd fake hostage (the one that doesn't go down with the ship) is never shown really. I don't know...

Bane and his mercinaries operate within the sewer systems beneath Gotham. That is their base. Batman goes down their to rat them out and defeat Bane and doesn't make it back. That "come at me" picture happens before the clip within the teaser trailer where Bane is walking up the steps to a tired Batman. They fight and Bane is easily winning takes off his vest (Shown in first Bane image revealed on twitter) and defeats Batman and breaks him. He doesn't make it to the surface in a good condition.

What do you mean doesn't make it to the surface in good condition?

Hey bosef, have you heard from your colleagues whether TDKR is supposed to be any good or not?

I felt the scene could still use some healthy trimming here and there. Some have said that it's claimed to be the final version of the scene but there may be some more editing yet to do.

That's Bruce doing push ups in prison.

I've heard the script is great and shooting went awesomely.

But, nothing's good or not until the film's in the can. Lots of things can still go wrong. Keep in mind, we're not even into pick-ups yet.

But Nolan is infallible and never does pickups! :argh:

:oldrazz:

making a film is so complex and long process that its good for us that we dont know what is happenign behind the scenes. :oldrazz:

Some of us do. :O

And it can often help keep things in perspective that can too easily be blown out of proportion in today's instant-media climate, et al.
