The Tim Sale appreciation thread

Love this.

Tim Sale is easily my favourite artist, and this comes from a guy who thinks most of the praised artists are overrated. I just love his "drawn" style, exaggerated characters, noir atmosphere. He's also a brilliant storyteller. Unlike someone like Jim Lee, each panel is part of the bigger picture and gives reason. Not bashing Jim Lee at all, I just think he's a tad overrated.

He also draws the definitive Two-Face in my opinion, and I love his joker which some people don't like. I'd certainly agree that some panels don't work with him, but in most he looks great.

Definitely agree with you, and Jim Lee only tad overrated?

Hehe, I was trying to avoid kicking up a whole bunch of Jim Lee fans but I might as well say it: I find his stuff tremendously overrated, Tim Sale for the win etc. :oldrazz:

I like Jim Lee for certain things. I think he's a good artist to come into comics with because he's mostly very standard. Tim Sale FTW though. Even though I've started to hate Loeb, I'll still by anything with Tim Sale's name on it.

Yes, Jim Lee is overrated. I just don't like his style. With is overly muscular characters where their shoulders are the size of their heads. They just all look too perfect. Am I the only one who sees this?

Tim Sale >>>>>> Jim Lee

Not only do I believe Sale is an amazing visual storyteller, his Batman is the most terrifying to me.

Kelley Jones would make the cut, but the ears are just a bit TOO long for me to take seriously.

Sale is one of my favorite comic artists and definitely among my top Batman artists ever. He does noir in a way that really exudes what I love about Will Eisner and Jim Steranko. His Batman has that type of "simplicity" that I appreciate about Bruce Timm's Batman. I guess I would summarize his Batman as you take:

...and give hin the dramatization of Jim Steranko

..and there it is!

Love Tim Sale. He has an exaggerated, almost cartoonish style that has weight and tactility to it. His coloring has a lot to do with that; muted yet bold. Him and Lee Bermejo are among my favorite comic artists ever.
