I feel like there's a big difference between Batman killing people who are posing an immediate threat to him, his allies or innocent people, and being a straight-up executioner who kills defeated enemies, no matter how evil they are (that's also why I was fine with Superman killing Zod at the end of MoS btw).

Maybe the Joker never actually put himself in a situation where Batman would have felt justified in killing him, and that's why he's still alive. I dunno, just a theory.

1st of all - That is Batman as originally created and intended as.
2nd of all - There has been 50 years of Batman in all mediums and so there isn't a definitive version as THE Batman, even the popular version of the last 10 or so years.

3rd of all - CBM are adaptions of the mythologies like shows and video games are, Comics have "else world and reboot" stories all the time and so CBM are like that with no definitive version as it's not based entirely in just one story including this having TDKR nfluences as it also mixes with DOS and the rest is just else world stuff.

I feel like a movie universe being seriously attempted finally for this company's cast of characters should strive to be true to the core of what the character's are and what they have represented, not creating a hodgepodge from alternate universes from the comics.

The films may be looked at as an "Elseworlds" type of thing but I don't think that's especially wise when you're trying to reach out to a whole world full of potential filmgoers who don't care about things like that, they just want Batman and want to see something that resembles what they know. Otherwise you just get people torn up on what they thought of what they saw, half and half.
