I don't think you're going to be able to tell much of a difference from that vid, because its in 1080p. You have to watch a 4k vid on a 4k TV/monitor to really see a true difference between 1080 and 4k.

that's what I've been doing.

watching the 4K version of the vids on my 4K tv.

and I can't really tell much of a difference unless I pause and really stare at the details.

How exactly are you watching them? If you're streaming from youtube on PS4 Pro it says you need roughly a stable 25mbps connection to see it properly:

https://www.playstation.com/en-gb/g...on-video/ps4-pro-viewing-youtube-video-in-4k/

For another streaming comparison, Netflix HD says you need about 15-20mbps spare capacity, as in if someone else starts using the internet while you're watching and you're near that cutoff performance starts dropping.

But that video you quoted only goes to 1080. Are you watching a different version of that vid?

I go directly to Youtube and bring up the video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gf9zM0U1rNY

On YT, it has a 4K option.

So, I use a 4K Youtube video downloader program to download the 4K version of the video, save it to a USB stick, and watch it on my 4K tv.

Now, I'm assuming the version I'm downloading is the 4K version. It says it is and I choose the highest resolution/biggest file option. And when I pull the vid up with VLC or GOM on my computer and check the video info, it says it is 4K.

edit: And I just checked the Killer Instinct vid I posted as an embed. And that goes to 4K on my end.

Do you notice the difference between 4K and 1080p downloads when you do that with other videos? Not gaming for eg. The process above sounds fine. Does it take you a long time to download them on your connection? :woot:

well, I've never really compared the 4K and 1080p versions of the same video. But now that you mention it, I might download the 1080p versions of those DF vids and see if they look any different on my 4K tv, compared to the 4K versions.

Downloading the 4K version does take longer than 1080p or 720p. Depending on the length/file size, I say it can take around 30 minutes to download on average. Maybe a bit longer with bigger/longer videos.

Whereas a regular 720p or 1080p video usually takes around 5-10 minutes maybe?

Oh right. In that case sounds like you're doing it right.

There's so many annoying settings that have to be correctly set right for 4K and HDR on things like this, on different sources and output devices etc. Don't know why it can't be more straightforward. Sometimes the differences between 1080p and 4K are not that big and sometimes they are. But I don't think I've ever seen a 4K video where I didn't know it was 4K just by looking at it. Although my display size is large and I'm not that far away from it.

Don't get me wrong. The 4K videos certainly look nice on my 4K tv.

I'm just saying I don't see that large of a difference between the X and base X1 versions in the DF vids I've watched so far.

And I'm not the only one. I let my dad watch some of the DF vids. He's definitely not a gamer and not a videophile. He could tell the X looks a bit clearer/sharper overall, and he could see the differences in detail when the vids point them out.

But, practically speaking, he couldn't tell a huge difference either. And felt for the $500 ( and being $150-$200 more expensive than the base X1 ), the X isn't worth it to him.

but then, I guess, my dad isn't the target demographic.......lol.

but it was good to hear his perspective and opinion on this.

Gotya. Did you notice much difference on the PS4 Pro 4K versions?

and speaking of annoying settings, that's one thing I dislike about my current standalone 4K player I'm using.

yeah, stuff looks nice on it, but there are a ****ton of settings to wade through.....lol. Half of them I don't even know what they are supposed to do or if it's affecting my picture quality. Same with all the audio settings. Too much.....lol!!

I just want the best picture and sound quality. but as you said when you have to go through all kinds of settings, it can get overwhelming.

that's one thing I liked about the X1 ( when it worked.....lol ). Not a lot of settings you have to check or wade through in terms of Video and Audio settings.

I also think the X1 had better sound quality than my current player or even my Pro. Or so it seems.

what, differences between X and Pro versions of a game?

So far, there's only been Rise to compare from DF, I think.

I did notice slight, subtle differences. but again, nothing dramatic.

but I am curious to see more X vs Pro comparison vids from DF. Like with ACO and Shadow of War.

I think those upcoming games will provide the best "test" as to whether I can see any noticeable differences and if the X is worth it as an upgrade over the Pro in terms of graphical quality.

Sorry I meant Pro vs base PS4.

oh.

tbh with the Pro, I didn't really watch many comparison vids between the Pro and base.

so I don't really remember if I noticed the differences........lol.

now, when I had my S last, and I compared Pro vs S versions of games, I did notice differences. especially with certain games like Diablo III and Injustice 2. I could tell a noticeable difference in clarity and sharpness between the 2 versions.

so, perhaps it depends on the game itself and maybe it's easier to see the differences when you are looking at the actual game, instead of watching a Youtube video.

RotTR is the most popular game for these comparisons lol. They're doing a really good marketing job for it!

^ yeah. lol

I wonder if the X will do anything to boost sales for Rise on Xbox 1. you can get it now for $20 ( plus $30 for the Season Pass, I think ). which is a steal if you consider the X version will be the best console version it seems.

I'm sure most have already played it by now. but if you haven't, and you're picking up the X, picking up Rise for $20 would seem like a no brainer, too.

ok, so I just watched the latest DF ROTR vid.

and while I've been a bit underwhelmed by their last few comparison vids, I was very impressed with this one, albeit with one "caveat" which I'll get to in a minute. But it's vids like this that will convince me to get an X. So, hopefully in the coming weeks, there will be more.

And that's because this vid DID demonstrate a slight but noticeable difference between the X and Pro versions - showing that the X version does indeed offer superior graphics quality over the Pro.

Aside from the color issue, where the Pro and PC looked more vibrant than the X ( the vid explained this was due to X using True HDR, which was not enabled in the vid ), it is clear that the X version looked sharper and clearer with higher end textures. It was also nice to hear from the vid that because of the X's extra memory, the higher end textures will be available in ALL of the modes. That's good info showcasing what that extra memory can be used for, and hopefully it's a sign of what we can expect in other games.

It was a bit concerning that running the game in Native 4K did experience FPS dips and screen tears during action heavy, intense scenes. Hopefully that can be fixed by Nov 7.

Now, for the caveat. There's just one factor that kind of throws a wrench into making a true and accurate comparison across the platforms. And that's Depth of Field (DOF).

As explained in the vid, DOF is turned off on the X version for some reason. It's turned on with the Pro version. And it looks like it can be toggled/adjusted with the PC version.

So, because DOF is not consistently applied to all versions, that does make it a bit hard to accurately compare the versions. And it raises questions like:

Will DOF be added back in for the final release of the X version and will that lessen the sharpness and clarity present on the X?

Can the Pro version be patched to turn DOF off or toggle/adjust it like the PC, and will that make the Pro version a little bit less blurry?

Can the Pro version be patched to include HDR like the X version will have?

Judging by the analysis in the vid, it seems like even if the X version had DOF added back in, it still would offer greater detail than the Pro because it is running the higher end textures like the PC. Still, though, it would have been better imo to be able to see what DOF would look like on the X and if that would affect the greater sharpness and clarity present in that version.

Because as it stands now, it looks like this is the order of clarity:

1. X and PC with DOF disabled.

2. PC with DOF on very high.

3. Pro with DOF enabled.

ROTR is a good candidate to show that the X CAN offer superior graphics over the Pro, and that there ARE differences that, while slight and sometimes subtle, are noticeable. even when viewing on a 4K screen and sitting a ways back ( as I'd normally would when playing ).

I really want to see more X vs Pro comparisons of other multi plat games. Past games like Diablo III, Skyrim, and Injustice 2, for example. But also upcoming games like ACO and SOW.

if the X can continue to demonstrate it can beat the Pro with noticeable improvements in graphics, then that will convince me to give the X a serious look this Holiday season.

For years, I've been jealous of PC players being able to get higher/better textures on their games, like on the Dragon Age games. If the X can bring those higher end textures to a console, or get damn near close, then that's got my interest.

lol every time I see you say Rotor x knight I think you're talking about EPN.tv's review segments. I'm sure Vic of that show will find this new acronym hilarious and will love( a good way) that rise of tomb raider has the same intials .

Those comparisons look good Knight

Yeah, will be best when we get 100% like-for-like with everything exactly the same to see all the differences.

yep. The Tomb Raider vid even impressed my dad - he could definitely tell the difference between the 2 and was impressed how the X was close to the PC.

he still doesn't think the X is totally worth it. but now he feels if he were a gamer, and he didn't own either system ( PS4 or Xbox ) and was in the market for one this Holiday, he would probably pay the extra $100 for the X.

however, if he already owned a PS4 Pro, he doesn't think it would be worth it to upgrade to the X.

Yeah I doubt too many are going to drop their Pro for the improvement to the X. It's more for people on original X1 and S to trade up and for those on PS4 & Pro who want to own both consoles.

agreed.

I wouldn't sell my Pro to upgrade to the X. but I would get an X as a 2nd ( or 3rd console ) if it had strong exclusives ( which it's lacking ). or if I planned on using the X for all multiplats going forward ( and using the Pro for PS exclusives ). or if I wanted the X for the extra features like 4K blu-ray.

Oh yes I forgot. Some may get for the 4K player capability that the Sony and Nintendo consoles aren't bothering with. Is the S and X 4k player any different for films?
