Xbox The Xbox One - Part 13

so, I was curious about Pro Enhanced games and install sizes. So, I uninstalled/reinstalled Rise of Tomb Raider from disc. The base game was about 16 GB with a patch/update of around 1.7 GB, for a total size of around 18 GB. And that includes the base game, plus Season Pass DLC, plus the PS4 VR mode, plus whatever Pro enhancements they added, I guess. At 18 GB, that was rather light, imo.

I then checked the total install size for Rise on the X1S, which included the base game plus Season Pass DLC. And that size was around 25 GB!!

so......go figure. The Pro version, which has Pro enhancements including a 4K mode, was actually smaller than the X1S version!!

So, I don't know if the Pro version of Rise is considered "true 4K" or if they had to install 4K assets. But whatever they did, they managed to keep the file size relatively small and even smaller than the X1S version. I certainly didn't need to download a large 10/20 GB 4K asset file or wait all day for the thing to install at my current internet speed.

That makes me wonder just how the X will handle those 4K assets and just how large they will be.

Forza 7 was listed at a whopping 100 GB. But how much of that is the base game and how much is the 4K assets? If I'm installing from a disc, how much will come from the disc and how much will have to be downloaded in a patch.

And if Rise gets an X patch ( and I hope it does ), I'm curious to see how that file size compares to both the Pro and X1S version.

If 4K assets on the X end up on average being only an extra 1 - 5 GB in size, that would be great. That's not as big of a deal.

If they end up averaging around 10 - 20 GB extra, that's ok and still somewhat workable.

but if they end up averaging around 40 GB or more, that's where problems will arise for those of us with ok internet speed and data caps.

Hopefully, MS will shed more light on this over the next few months.

Oh I wonder what the reason for the difference is between the file sizes on S & Pro for the same game. I hope the games aren't too large with 4K although they likely will be.

yeah, the size difference for Rise was curious.

the only thing I can think of is that the PS4 version was released a year later with everything on disc. So, maybe that allowed them to optimize/compress everything into a slightly smaller file size?

but still, it's surprising that the PS4 version, which includes Pro/4K enhancements, clocks in at a smaller size.

And yeah, I hope the 4K files on the X end up being not too large. Because right now, that is a huge impediment to me given my current internet situation.

And after conducting my Pro/X1S tests this week, my impressions of the Pro have improved. It may not be as powerful as the X and it may not be "true 4K", but it offers at least "near 4K" quality with a noticeable improvement in graphics. And it does that without requiring faster internet speeds or unlimited data to download larger files.

So for me, the Pro is right in that "sweet spot." It may not be the best, but it may be just "good enough."

Only just over 3 months away now. Looking forward to comparing X1, S and X!

hopefully, we learn more at Gamescom later this month.

You know what date it is?

Ok thanks. Hopefully decent info given it's getting pretty close now. As long they have mroe to tell.

yeah, I'm looking forward to it.

I'd really like to see comparisons between S and X versions.

For example, show GOW 4 running on the S vs running on the X.

also, maybe they will announce bundles or even special edition consoles?

I'm also now curious about the fan noise quality of the X. will it run quieter than the S?

What big game is being released around then that might come bundled with it?

Hmmm, I'll have to see more of it but not interested as of yet.

while not a AAA title, Super Lucky's Tale also releases same day as the X.

also, Forza 7, AC Origins, and Shadow of War all release a few weeks prior.

any of those games could serve as good bundled games.

Yeah, I'd take any of those last 3,

it is kind of curious as to why they picked November 7 for the release date of the X, when those 3 big name X Enhanced titles ( Forza 7, ACO, SOW ) all release in October.

you'd think they'd want to release the X in time for those games in October.

if you're looking to play those games on the X because you want to experience the best possible graphics/play quality, you are going to delay buying them until November when the X does come out.

I guess you could start on the S and then continue your save on the X when you trade in.

^ true. but still, it is a curious move to wail till November.

of course, if it released on October, we could play it a month earlier......lol.

I don't think the release of a console can be planned around the release of any one game (what if the game gets delayed for eg, or if it turns out to be a turkey lol) as it's a much bgger decision with a lot more moving parts and production/marketing/stocking schedules. And even if it releases in a month without a new game, it's going to sell tonnes on its own hype alone, and big new games will be around soon anyway. Bundles will be more useful in selling the conole when the demand has dropped off a bit. On day 1 extra special selling tactics aren't really needed.

true. good points.

hopefully, there will be some good bundles with the X.

and as we move into 4K gaming, I wonder if the WDs and Seagates of the world will start coming out with faster external drives to handle the 4K games, much like the X's internal hdd is supposed to be 50 % faster.

Maybe they can speed up my current drive! Not ready to buy a new one just yet!

Would a firmware update be able to update an existing drive? It would be nice if they could.

anyways, I just ordered a portable 4TB external for $100. plus Titanfall 2 Deluxe for $16!

I think that 4TB will last me a long while and will provide the extra space I need for the X.

if the X internal drive offers noticeable improvements in terms of gameplay and load times, then I will use the 4TB drive as "long term storage" ( my library so to speak ) and just transfer the most current game(s) to the internal drive.

of course, if the X internal drive difference isn't that meaningful, then I'll just continue to do what I'm doing now and just running everything off of the external.

I'm just getting used to the latest redesigned Home page layout, and now they're going to redesign it again.......sigh.

hopefully in the next redesign, they add the option to let us control the brightness/dimness of our background image.

what good is letting us use our own custom images if you just apply a "dim filter" over it......
