Homecoming The Zendaya is possibly someone, maybe thread - Part 2

Seems like the marketing people will actually try to pretend that the MJ leak never happened. lol This is exactly how I expected Z's character in the trailer, one random line and nothing else. She wasn't even featured in the second trailer. They would probably give her little to no emphasis during the marketing campaign just to have the "big reveal" for the end of the movie. Whatever.

Isn't it sending the wrong message to woman and young girls, if Zendaya is in fact MJ, that hey you can look like how she looks in this trailer, grimy and what not, and she's just behind the scenes to everyone but at the end she puts on makeup and glams herself up and thats when Peter finally notices her?? Just don't sound right to me.

Preparing little girls for the real world. Ain't nothing wrong with that. :o

Here name really is Michelle but everyone calls her MJ/Marry Jane because she smokes lots of weed.

How about this. Judging by the fact that she's sitting by herself in the cafeteria, I can only assume that not many people at the school talk to her or know much about her like she just seen as someone who's "just there"; all they know is that her name starts with a M but everyone thinks it's Michelle and she's so over it that she's like "yeah Michelle, whatever". So when we get to the actual homecoming part, she reveals to Peter that her name is actually Mary Jane.

As I said in the other thread, even if there is a twist and it turns out at the end of the movie she is MJ, it will be wholly unsatisfying, because she's nothing like MJ. And if her name isn't even Mary Jane but Michelle Johnson, it's not going to be a clever twist. I don't want to see her becoming the character. Who really wants MJ Begins?
I didn't ask fo it, but then again I didn't ask for another SM film ether, so I say bring on MJ Begins. Also, people are placing faaar to much weight on this twist, given more important factors like acting, wring and cast chemistry.

Her character and personality isn't anything like Mary Jane's, let alone her appearance. Even if she isn't quite that person yet, the fact that she has to go through a character arc to become her is completely contrary to MJ. If anything, MJ's character arc is in the opposite direction with her being the superficial and popular party girl on first appearance who is revealed to be much deeper than she initially appears.
One, it is a reach to assume that she'll be a superficial party girl the moment she becomes pretty. Second, the MJ personality has differed in all recent incarnations. Classic era MJ is nothig like the Raimi version or the Ultimate version.

Except that El Mayimbe is wrong and the big reveal is... something else. :sly:

In Ultimate Spider-Man, Mary Jane is more of an intellectual and not a party girl. In the animated series, she's portrayed as a young aspiring reporter who wants to get scoops on Spider-Man. And she's been Peter's childhood friend since they were young. No real romance there. They've hinted at it, but it's never gone anywhere.

I really hope she's not Mary Jane, even more so after that clip where she seems about 0% like her.

I have no idea who she is.

I don't know which girl in the trailer is Zen what's her name.

I honestly don't think she's even in this film all that much, at least based on what I've seen so far. With Zendaya saying that she's not a love interrst and the producers surely wanting to get their money's worth from Robert Downey, I can easily see Michelle Jane falling into the same hole as every other female supporting characters in the MCU. People complain a lot about weak MCU villains, but almost as much has been written about them not properly utilizing talents like Paltrow, Portman and Mcadams.

Seems like the marketing people will actually try to pretend that the MJ leak never happened.
Of course they'll ignore it. They know that the general public doesn't care that much.

I'm confused... I thought Marvel confirmed she was playing MJ, but was it a leak? Or just a rumor?

^ No, only El Mayimbe claimed she was in MJ in an "exclusive scoop." It's supposed to be a big twist/reveal in the movie - a "She's All That" ugly duckling transformation.

No one, not Marvel, not the director, not the actress, confirmed she's playing MJ.

According to the director and Zendaya, her character's name is "Michelle."

that's all we know for sure.

while that is true, past incarnations of MJ have all shared several characteristics. MJ has been white, red head, and pretty.

Taking race out of the issue, MJ has been defined by her signature red hair and she's always been a pretty girl - whether she's the cute, nerdy "girl next door" type from Ultimate comics, the classic party girl from 616 or Spectacular show, or even childhood best friend from the Ultimate show.

MJ is also usually portrayed as friendly and outgoing and playful. Sure, classic party girl MJ is more extroverted than nerdy Ultimate MJ. But brainy Ultimate MJ wasn't some introverted bookish girl who sits off in the corner and makes fun of people with dry, sarcasm.

And no version of MJ ( as far as I can remember ) has ever been portrayed as a plain, frumpy looking ugly duckling who needs to undergo a transformation into a beauty.

If Zendaya is indeed playing MJ and we got a glimpse of her in the trailer, then that would be such a radical departure from the character - not just in terms of overall look but also her personality and potential story arc. If anything, it's the antithesis of what MJ's character type is supposed to be. To the point it feels like a totally different character.

By the end of the film she can easily two of those three things, and seeing how we are taking race out of the issue it won't be a big deal.

That's because they are taking inspiration from elsewhere by merging parts of MJ with Allison from the Breakfast Club.

A lot of conjecture based on only one line. But yes, most of the highschoolers are completely different now. Wonder why no-one is giving so much grief to what they are doing with Liz, Ned and Flash?

maybe because MJ is more well known and iconic and important than Liz, Ned, and Flash.

in the "food chain" of supporting characters, MJ is way higher in importance than the others. and then Flash is higher than characters like Liz or Ned.

so, when you make such drastic changes to such a well known character, there's bound to be grief and complaining. more so than the other characters.
