Everyone seems to be complaining that Zendaya's character is nothing like Mary Jane. Well, perhaps she isn't even supposed to be Mary Jane and that's why she has different name. Maybe the shared initials are just a signal for the audience that "yep, she is going to be Peter's great love in this universe".

I get that people are disappointed that Mary Jane likely wont now be appearing, but I don't quite understand why people are complaining that they got her all wrong, when she even isn't the character.

She's obviously suppose to be THIS universe's MJ, they wouldn't have given her that nickname if that wasn't the case. & the fact that we'll never get a proper MJ makes it worse that she's nothing like traditional MJ. They didn't have to give her those important initials that mean so much in terms of Spider-Man's world but they did. Fricking Flash Thompson is closer to the comics than the most important woman in Peter Parker's life.

Unless Sony & Co confirmed it, nothing is sure. MJ nickname was only said once and nobody actually used it during the movie, so this could be just a nod.

I mean, if they wanted to do a proper character reveal, why not reveal that her last name was also Watson ?

but like... WHY would they ever nickname someone mj if she's not supposed to be their version of mary jane? it's not like they're nicknaming someone "puny parker" other than peter or whatever, so it's pretty clear whether she'll get a big transformation into model/actress-redheaded-confident mj or there'll be a big reveal about her last name or not, she is for all intents and purposes, the mj of the mcu.

She is probably going to be this universe's MJ in a sense that she is going to play the same role that Mary Jane has traditionally played, without actually being that character.

I agree that they shouldn't call Michelle MJ, because that's just making things complicated,
but at least now we have a better understanding of Marvel's plans.

I don't want to be pedantic but Feige is the producer of all MCU films, yet if he came up with all the controversial decisions is still not confirmed for you (you said if right there). Yet just because Sony also has creative control over SMH, it's automatically assumed that Pascal's "stupidity" caused the film's controversial decision. ("If Sony has some creative control then obviously Pascal is responsible" is implied right there).

If that isn't double standard I don't know what is.

It's not double standard, I'm making an assumption. I've taken issues with Feige's decisions about Ultron or The Mandarin before, I brought up Pascal because she oversaw the production of the film alongside him and I assume she certainly has the power to make decisions about this particular movie's direction, as much as Feige has. He's not innocent in making that decision, I simply think maybe he isn't the only one to blame here given the situation between Marvel and Sony. That's all. "Double standard"? Bollocks.

They didn't reveal Sharon's last name until CW. So maybe they're doing the same with Michelle. Really this whole Michelle/MJ thing reminds me of the Kate/Sharon thing in TWS.

So what if we have a better understanding of Marvel's plans. I have understood their plans for a long time. Many people called this early during production and it wouldn't surprise me if the original plan was for "MJ" to get the "Breakfast Club/She's All That" makeover at the end but they might have changed course after initial media backlash over Zendaya being Mary Jane and instead went the Dark Knight Rises "Robin" route, where they just do a nod.

I think I'm just gonna :barf:

I meant that as only a small solace.

A mere quantum of solace. :o

well to be fair she was clearly named agent 13 (who could only be sharon carter), and then sharon by the end of the movie, but it's funny that the credits have her as kate/agent 13.

anyway. wonder how they'll play the michelle name thing.

in the Spider-Man universe, there is only one

MJ. When you hear the name MJ in a Spider-Man story, that can only mean one person. Same with Harry. Or Norman. Or JJJ. Or Gwen. Or Flash.

These characters have been so ingrained into the Spidey mythos, so familiar, that their first names, initials, nicknames instantly identify the character. You don't think of any other character whenever you hear those names.

Until now. :whatever:

Except Sharon's character wasn't completely stripped of the core of her character and turned into something she's not. There's a difference there.

I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about how Michelle's role in HC reminds me of Sharon's role in TWS. I mean the whole MJ line is kinda similar to when they revealed Sharon's first name at the end of TWS.

Except Michelle is gonna get much more screentime, I hope.

Sharon had so small of a role that it's hard to say if she's like in the comics or not.
Although her major trait "work before feelings" was completely ignored. And fighting skills as well.

Sharon was a Shield agent, tasked with keeping an eye on Steve. I don't see the comparison, given that the character Zendaya plays has literally nothing in common with the character she is supposed to be playing. While the character Emily Van Camp plays is Sharon Carter in everything, including her name.

Yes but Steve found out her about her real name in CW the third movie, not right way.
So we could have the same situation here, where they drag the mystery around Michelle identity.

The only way I can see myself getting kinda onboard with this
MJ is if her arc is reverse of what it is in the comics. Where she has a terrible home life like comic MJ with an abusive father. Her being the way she is is a facade she puts on to keep people away. But she eventually shows that she is the MJ we all know & love in SM2 when she comes out of her protective shell. Maybe MJ was very popular at her previous school but her dad being an ******* pulled her out. She hates the name "Mary Jane" because her dad sometimes mocks her for it. That would actually be an update on the character imo

If they spin it like that, that's the only way I could see myself warming up to it.

Also would like to see a scene like this:
c_the-amazing-spider-man-2-il-potere-di-electro_notizia-3-2.jpg

When Spidey pays him a visit after Peter finds out what he's been doing to her.

eh.....no thanks.

you shouldn't have to do a reverse/Bizarro arc to get the character to how he/she is supposed to be.

I agree, they threw us a jumbled puzzle. I'm just trying to assemble the pieces. :oldrazz:

Idk
At least she wouldn't be INO if they incorporated her comic backstory. Also they could make her reason for dyeing her hair red as a homage to her Mom's side of the family

Again, different thing. Sharon was an undercover agent. Michelle seems to be, for all intents and purposes, a fake Mary Jane.
