Homecoming The Zendaya is possibly someone, maybe thread - Part 4

That MJ reference was so pointless and unneeded, it was just dumb fan-pandering / attacking or something. Definitely felt like something that was forced into the script.

Actually, he confirmed she is MJ. He said she wasn't Mary Jane. This illustrates the entire issue being debated here.

Frankly, her role was so tiny I wonder what discussion we would have, if any, but for the MJ reveal. I feel like Michelle would get as much attention as Betty Brant if she were just Michelle.

Well she wouldn't be potentially implied to be a well-known character so to say.

Agreed. I know Marvel and Sony thought they could be funny with it but it really was more a WTF moment than something cute and unexpected. Plus, it takes away now, if MJ Watson is actually introduced, her being nicknamed that. They could've gone for a 'You just hit the jackpot, tiger'-moment but blew it by actually introducing an MJ in this film. Michelle was a completely pointless, unneeded and unamusing character in general. They should lose her for the sequels.

^ As far as side characters, I actually thought Michelle was interesting. I think she knows his secret identity. She was deadpan humor in a good way.

I didn't like Liz all that much. Though the twist was cool.

I actually liked Michelle, thought she was funny, but I agree. It was just distracting and unnecessary.

I was disappointed that we never got an actual conversation between her and Peter.

Well, she technically talks to him during the D.C. rescue. :o

so, are you saying a girl calling me a loser, or flipping me the bird, and saying I am lame for showing up at the party... doesn't count as having an actual conversation?

well, damn... I'm not sure I've ever had an actual conversation with a girl then :csad:

LOL

I'm sure they're taking your expert advice into advisement

yeah, Michelle isn't going anywhere. I mean anything is possible and they could always drop the character, but I doubt that will happen.

Now, I do think based on recent comments that Michelle is not Mary Jane Watson, they have given themselves a very tiny window to pivot and introduce Mary Jane in a future film.

however, I just don't think that will happen, either.

I think my only issue with this character was how she was used in the film. The material given her was kinda lackluster to be honest. Because everything else was so much livelier and engaging than her scenes and dialog she doesn't really register. Once the "MJ" thing happened at the end I was like "Well... I guess I was supposed to pay attention to this character." It felt at the end that she was just there as set up for the next film, but since the character barely moves the needle in any way you kinda don't really care.

All the controversy and in the end it was all kinda... meh. I guess she's gonna be MJ.

The stupidest thing is that now I can't refer to Mary Jane as MJ because it leads to confusion.

Nothing Feige said in that interview has given me the indication that the real Mary Jane will never be featured in future films.

it would be kind of weird to have 2 characters with the same initials/nicknames.

they'd almost have to address it in story as a sort of running gag that Peter has many MJs in his life ( like Clark has many LLs ).

or else the romance with Michelle ends, Aunt May tries to set him up with her neighbor's niece, who's also called MJ. And Peter is resistant cuz he doesn't want to go out with another MJ.

I still hope they'd go with my idea in which Mary Jane turns out to be Michelle's cousin. And maybe they could do something like reveal that Michelle got the MJ nickname from her, she finds out, get's annoyed and asks her, "why have you been using my nickname?" or something like that?

Maybe they could also go the route of having Michelle be the love interest in the first few films but then tragically gets killed off (essentially filling out the Gwen Stacy role for these films), Peter meets Mary Jane later on, he realizes that her initials are also MJ and that stings him because it reminds him of the death of his former love?

I mean these are just ideas of course and I don't know how likely it is that they would go with either of them. But remember that this spidey should more than likely have a very long life on the big screen and there's plenty of opportunity to introduce other major players in his mythos later down the line.

hmmm......not sure I like the cousin or killing off Michelle ideas.

but I'm sure they could come up with some scenario to introduce Mary Jane Watson if they wanted to.

I'm just not that optimistic about that prospect right now.

but we shall see.

I think the only thing that pissed me off ( aside from the MJ thing) is the party scene where she makes fun of Pete and Ned for showing up, and when they point out that she's there, too, she responds "am I?"

Like.... *****, yes tf you are. Quit acting like you're above conformity while you still conform.

Well for what it's worth, Feige is supposedly a big fan of the character, unlike those malcontents who run the comics division.

hopefully, but Feige supposedly being a big fan of the character didn't seem to work out too well here......lol.

Or maybe it did and Feige was the one who made them "walk back" the original plans for Michelle as a reinvention of Mary Jane ( as that other writer suggested ). Maybe the "call me MJ" was the compromise.

who knows.........

really, she says that?

also, I thought I read somewhere she flips the bird at someone? is that true, too?

Yep, she said that.

And she flips off Peter as a way of greeting when he enters the homecoming dance.
