Thor: Ragnarok The Official News and Speculation Thread - Part 1

Every Thor movie had comedy. The first movie played up the fish out of water aspects.

To me, the comedy wasn't the weak part of the movie. Removing the comedy without improving anything else isn't going to help it either. If the early rumors are true, this movie was the darkest Thor movie by far, so they decided to add comedy to lighten it. The focus in discussion has been that, but I don't think they can go from Grave of the Fireflies to Airplane overnight. More likely, it's a serious movie with some moments of levity and that's what they're focusing talking about at the moment. But it's pretty far out. Let's wait and see a bit.

I think that's prolly right.

I guess part of the fun of the SHH site is that we get to get all riled up about things we don't know about. Let's wait until we know a little bit more before jumping to conclusions.....nah....what's the fun in that?

Sometimes I read some posts and say to myself "Surely you can't be serious". Then a little voice in my head says "I am serious and don't call me Shirley."

it's Waititi, Hemsworth and Ruffalo that are gettin everyone riled up

if they even said "it's this epic story of the end of Asgard, the stakes are huge, Thor will deal with a lot of darkness, but we've found a way to inject some wonderful humor" (which is probably what it is) it wouldn't be as big a deal

but when all they say is "humor, humor, wacky humor, buddy road trip, humor" it gets people nervous

you'd think they would now by now how geeks work

I think they do know which is why they do it they know it gets geeks riled up and they love it. :yay:

If anyone seriously thought we were going to get a movie with no jokes, I don't know what to tell them. Even the Winter Soldier had jokes in it and so will Civil War according to the Russos.

and not a single person here said that.. who are you calling out?

sweet strawman argument ya got there

And vice versa :cwink:

Either way I cannot wait. Marvel has alot going for it's films each film is bringing something new to the table.

Agree. I'm psyched about Dr. Strange and the upcoming Thor movies. They were my 2 favorite characters.

Yeah I think you are right. I am hoping they MEAN to say the former but are getting excited for the latter by isolating the humor aspect.

People here need to understand that every movie has some form of humor and people like me who is labeled anti-humor just prefer a darker tone over a comedic one. Just because some of us want a serious tone doesn't mean we hate jokes because we also like to laugh/giggle every now and then. We are just hoping for a film that has less humor not NO humor. The more humor there is, the harder it is to take it seriously regardless of how entertaining the film is. Take The Martian for example, I loved the film but considering it is about a guy stranded on a planet all by himself, I didn't take the film seriously as I could have because there were plenty of humor.

I am not jumping to conclusions yet, but so far they are giving an impression that they are planning to make a comedy when they called up Waititi and say "we want it to be funny".

I'm in "wait and see" mode, but you bring up some extremely important points. Something's a little off with the messaging when the only thing being put forth is "we know that the previous movie was a bit underwhelming, but we know how to fix it! More humor. Way more humor. Buddy humor. Wacky humor. Off-beat humor, etc."

But... but...

EDIT: And before anyone lumps me in with the "oh, you just hate the funnies" crowd, let me say that my four favorite MCU movies are, in order, Avengers, Winter Soldier, GOTG and Iron Man. A case can be made that three of those four movies are straight up comedies. So, yea... I have nothing against bringing the humor, and bringing it hard. Let's just not forget to bring the epic in equal spades as well. That's all I've ever wanted for Thor.

I don't think that guy makes any difference. It's not necessarily true he enjoys bad movies and despises great movies.

Let's wait and see. We still have to wait for quite a while.

Are people actually DENYING that the center of talk around this movie has been about how the humor will be? :loco:

Waititi birthed this discussion. It was HIS talking point and it's clearly a hot button issue. He even quickly called upon the Loki/Hulk rag doll moment and mentioned he wanted more of that. He hasn't talked about much anything else other than generic nonsense that most directors say.

Excuse some people for being concerned - especially after the ending we had to endure in T:TDW. Cars and the Johunteim Beast weren't the only things falling out of the sky. So was lame humor, specifically because of how much emphasis was placed on Darcy and that stupid intern.

It's hard to take a stoic figure like Thor and manifest that on screen if they're constantly looking to goof off in the movie. Sure, do it early, do it a little in the 2nd act, but for effin' sake gives us some stakes in the climax. I'll take the ending of CA:TWS over ANY of these Marvel movies any day of the week.

In that movie they ditched the jokes, put their big boy pants on, and gave us some actual drama. More plz! I hate watching villains as powerful as Ronan get absolutely neutered by a silly "dance off bro!". This is coming from someone who laughed at the Hulk/Loki thing, yet at the same time I understand the complaints about it. I figured they wouldn't try to copycat moments like that in their movies, but that's not the case.

/end rant.

Yeah, he doesn't sound serious at all. He's just goofing around. I hope it all works in the end.

Absolutely. He also sounds very confident. I always hear praise for his movies, plus he's a comic book collector and seems to be preparing for the movie really well.

Really? Other than the Vampire movie I've never heard of anything this guy has done as a director. I will say... I am surprised no one here has made the connection yet that he was Tom in the Reynolds GREEN LANTERN movie yet.

Yeah, Marvel brings indie directors into the spotlight. Saying you haven't heard of their work is saying "it wasn't mainstream." It has no bearing on its quality. The only real valid complaint is if you say "I saw the movies he made and didn't like them."

I know... wasn't meant to be taken seriously. Was just having a little bit of fun. Poke a Faraci. :)
