My thought is that Bane may actually need the apparatus and mask for health reasons also, if it does give him any increased strength, if any.

ok, so for those who are asking if that's some sort of surgery that bane's got going on his back.....i've had spinal fusion surgery and my back looks almost exactly like that. in fact i noticed it straight away and it kinda freaked me out.
