I don't know about you but I can spot a height difference of two inches quite easily, providing that both postures are equal.

How often will that be the case? Are both actors required to stand perfectly upright constantly? Maybe they'll have Hardy stand more upright than Bale? (Lump that right in with camera trickery)

You misunderstood what I said. I know you weren't talking about the perma-white. Reread my post.

I think you missed my point. Do you think the spirit of the character would be good enough for the audience if the Joker didn't have the face paint and purple suit in TDK? Remember when people were scared ****less when an image of Heath Ledger [in his Joker attire] on the set without the face paint surfaced a few years ago? I just don't understand why there's a special exception for Bane.

Jesus.

1) every time they're filming bane it's from waist-high or lower. Why do you think that is

2) they film scenes in broad daylight and make them look like night in post. I have a feeling they're clever enough to make a guy look "big"

And I'll say for a third time, two inches is a minimal height difference. I realize that he is technically shorter, but I think it's reasonable to treat it as if they are basically the same height. When people say otherwise, it feels like they're trying to make the disparity seem more dramatic to make their case stronger.
And I think that you're making the disparity less dramatic to make your case stronger. Even if they do appear to be the same height, it's still not right, because he is supposed to be taller.

And frankly, I don't think Hardy is big enough to pull off the big guy looking with a height disadvantage. I think he will if camera tricks are used to make him taller, but right now, with no performance to go on, he doesn't look that intimidating.

I wouldn't call Bane being 5'10" the same as the Joker being without the white face (be it makeup or otherwise).

Again, you're taking this to ludicrous extremes. Bane to the general audience is "that big, strong guy with the mask." Show them the promo pic of Hardy and they'll see a big, strong guy with a mask. Show them the spy pictures and then they'll say "Okay, maybe he's not huge, but he's still that strong guy with the mask." He's not wearing a purple suit and carrying playing cards.

The promo pic is of him sitting down with no basis for reference. You don't see a big, strong guy. You see a guy in a mask. Doesn't scream "Bane". Sorry.

He's not carring an umbrella and wearing a top hat either. Wearing "a headpiece" simply doesn't cut it for "Oh, that must be Bane!"

If none of us knew who'd been casted and for what roles, but saw the set pics, this would be a guessing game about right now. It'd be purely speculation, and you know it. A number of people would say "It's gotta be Bane!", while others might say "I still say it's Black Mask...", while a larger majority might say "I think he's just the new leader of the League of Shadows. Probably referred to as Ubu or something. I guess Talia is the main antagonist..."

Joker, Two-Face, Scarecrow...there would be no guessing whatsoever based on their looks.

I think they will make him look taller with angles too, I'm just explaining why I feel that it's necessary. Right now we're arguing about a potentially short Bane.

Um yes it is. The make up made it easy to identify the Joker. Actually it's his overall size, mass and height. If no one told me who it was I'd probably assume that it was Subzero or some forgotten villain that they found in the vault.

I wouldn't go that far. For two reasons: 1. James Bond is a far more iconic character, and 2. Bane hasn't had a lot of roles where there was audio.
1. Of course he is, James Bond has been around since the early 50's. The point is, there is no reason to change up Bond's accent, as there is no need to change Bane's. To do so, would be to change something, just for the sake of change.

2.Actually, he's been in about 7-8 different cartoons where he's always had the accent. In the books he is supposed to have an accent, again, it's just part of the character.

Yes, and while Hardy doesn't have the height, he certainly has the mass. He's built stocky to begin with and he put on a ton of muscle for this movie.

There are enough identifiable factors of Bane involved in Nolan's interpretation to provide a fairly straightforward deduction of who it is.

lol Hardy has the mass? I do not consider myself a body builder but there's no way he's bulkier than I am. He looks like the average athletic gym guy that you would see walking down the streets except some of them are larger.

The only time I felt like thinking "This is Bane." was during the Teaser. When you see a big guy, in black tank top and some kind of mask walking towards Batman and he looks worried as hell. But anything else? Especially when you get a good look at his face? So not Bane.

Hardy is a stocky guy but unfortunately it's not enough. He needs the extra height to 'scale him up' a bit. Which is easily achievable by using certain angles.

So the potential is there. The question is, will they use it?

Eh, even in the trailer I thought he looked like an average guy with a badass attire that just happened to be close to the camera.

Well something about Bane is freaking Batman out, so in the end, something's going to be working on film.

it's probably a metal band

but yes in the trailer he looked normal sized

I don't think anybody claimed that it was going to make the film suck, it's just a potentially bad adaptation of Bane.

Eh, even in the trailer I thought he looked average but just so happened to be close to the camera.

That is what Jak is talking about. The use of positioning and particular angles to make one subject seem larger.

As for Hardy not being any bigger than you?

I guess you're pretty big, then.

you say that like there aren't tons of guys bigger than hardy

Except people aren't necessarily as big as they look when they flex. That's a bad example. This was either from late June or early July. And that image [from the teaser] just proved that, regardless of the angle, he still looked average.

Everyone who is worried about Bane's size / height, please watch this video:

Body Tweaking Technology

It shows they can enhance it easily by just adjusting a few things.
