This is a continuation thread, the old thread is [split]373863[/split]
I'm patron of FLACK Cambridge and I am appealing to you on their behalf to donate just £2 each before the end of the year to help FLACK keep on doing its vital, inspiring work with homeless people. I've been supporting FLACK since it first started and now I'm asking you to help me to help them. FLACK has achieved amazing things and I'm incredibly proud to be their patron. More details about what FLACK does below but here's my offer to you: every £2 donation will receive a personal thank you message from me and entry into a prize draw to win signed Tom Hardy goodies.
£2 could make such a difference - what else could you get for £2?
Cheaper than a medium latte or cappuccino.
Cheaper than a vodka and coke.
Cheaper than a magazine.
Cheaper than a packet of tobacco or 10 cigarettes
FLACK is a social enterprise and registered charity based in Cambridge which benefits people who are or have been homeless. It's unique in that everyone - homeless, housed, staff, volunteer, service user - pulls together to write and produce a comprehensive listings magazine for Cambridge with articles, poetry and reviews.
I learned about the challenges faced by the homeless community in Cambridge when I starred in the film 'Stuart: A Life Backwards' which was a pivotal role in my career. Homelessness impacts people for life and in many cases causes mental health problems and drug and alcohol addictions. It's a cause that means a hell of a lot to me personally as I know from my own experience how tough it is to battle addiction. I am so proud of everyone at FLACK, including studio artist Toby Peters, who has been sober for 5 years after many years of alcoholism and homelessness. Last week Toby attended an award ceremony in the House of Lords for winning the a TalkTalk Regional Digital Hero Award for his work using film to facilitate people's recovery. FLACK has been a lifeline for him and many others like him in Cambridge who have been involved.
I really care about this cause but the current economic climate is very tough for charities as everyone is trying to spend less. Here's the stats from Kirsten Lavers, FLACK's Creative Director:
"Most important is the investment and achievements of our 33+ homeless members which is so rewarding - I can't begin to tell you .. when we started I had people telling me you'll never get homeless people to turn up and give their time for free ... NONSENSE !! they are not only loving it, being involved with FLACK is making a real and noticeable difference to everyone's lives. Two heroin addicts are now COMPLETELY clean, two alcoholics have gone through detox and are sustaining their sobriety, we've got 4 people into employment, smiles on people's faces, opinions expressed, creativity flowing ... this really is ground breaking work. For every £1 invested in FLACK we're returning at least £3 of savings to the public purse and social value (eg Heroin addict costs £13,200 per year)!"
I would be so happy if you could donate just £2 because it's clear that FLACK works and together we can help them to continue making a real difference to the lives of homeless people.
If you have a minute please look at the videos and testimonials on FLACK's website and youtube channel.

UPDATES:
1 December
I've just heard from Kirsten Lavers, FLACK's Creative Director that FLACK's challenge is even more urgent than we thought. The Board of Trustees have set the FLACK team the enormous challenge of raising £45,000 by January 5th 2012 or they will be forced to close FLACK down due to lack of funds / time to develop upon their achievements so far.
Two years ago FLACK was just a dream - now it's a vibrant charity and social enterprise making a significant difference to the lives of homeless people. One member, Smiffy was an alcoholic and heroin addict when I met him in Cambridge in May 2010. Smiffy is now clean and dry - in full recovery from both addictions. He's down at the FLACK base everyday learning how to use his laptop and yesterday he had a chat with Julian Huppert, MP for Cambridge - check out this You Tube video
