Venom Venom's Box Office Thread

Horrific omission of Woody's wig in that post :D
There's upwards of 825M in the wallet for a better wig in the sequel, don't you worry. It will look as good as Mera's hair.

Spider Man 3 was the highest grossing international Spider Man related character movie...until Venom came along.

Venom has become the highest grossing International movie based off the Spider-Man franchise.

Venom 2 can’t come sooner. Probably will make over a billion worldwide and between $300-400 domestically

Sony’s ‘Venom’ Gets Extended China Release; Par’s ‘Bumblebee’ Sets Date

After nearly four weeks of sinking its fangs into the Chinese box office, Sony’s Venom has been granted an extended run. Through Monday, the Tom Hardy-starrer has grossed $263.6M locally, taking the past frame at No. 2 behind China breakout A Cool Fish. It had earlier held No. 1 during its first two weeks of play, seeing an unprecedented hold at Middle Kingdom turnstiles.

Venom, which has a sizable investment from China behemoth Tencent, counts $846.9M worldwide through Monday and $634.6M at the international box office. In China, it is the 2nd biggest import of the year, behind only Avengers: Infinity War. It has been a crazy beast.

Adding about $1M per day in the midweeks, the Sony/Marvel symbiote will be impacted this weekend by the arrival of Warner Bros/DC’s Aquaman which releases Friday. WB has dived in with both feet on Aquaman’s China opening which comes a week ahead of some major offshore bows and two weeks before its domestic debut.

Seriously crazy ... This is exceeding any form of my wildest dreams

Hmmmm. Will be interesting to see how close this can come to SM3 and Homecoming now.

Could Venom take the box office crown from Spidey himself?

This is so Sony, isn't it? It's at once a celebration and admonishment of their output. Venom is now in position to overtake a character whose immense appeal they diminished. It's sad and funny. Sony being Sony. At least things are looking up all around for the studio now. Both the Venom sequel and FFH have a billion in their sites and the Sony produced Into the Spider-Verse could possibly win an Oscar (WTF!?!?). Crazy and I love it.

I really think even Sony's lows and misfires still aren't as bad as some other CBM efforts from other studios, even some offerings from the MCU. But this whole situation really is funny/ironic/strange lol. So weird. Also, I had zero interest in S-V, but after these reviews dang, think I'm definitely gona have to see it.

All we can hope is more quality enjoyable films keep getting produced!

Could Venom take the box office crown from Spidey himself? INSANE!

My inclination is to say that it stops just short of Homecoming's draw. However, given the film's meager budget, I'm confident that Venom made more profit for Sony than Homecoming did for Marvel Studios.

Is there a market it hasn't been released in overseas yet? If not the international numbers this week indicate it's nearly out of gas.

Here’s a thought: What if Far From Home makes less than Venom because of the lack Iron Man?

Sony made all the profit for the ticket sales of Homecoming. While being a Marvel Studios production, it is still a Sony film. Per the Spider-Man agreement, all ticket revenue went to Sony. Marvel made it's money on the merch only.

Wonder how much it has left in the tank.

Well a lack of IM is a huge positive for me personally, so I'm actually more excited for FFH than I was for HC. But it really will be interesting to see if IM made/makes that big of a difference in this franchises' BO haul.

Although more and more, I'm genuinely starting to think timing plays a very significant or much larger role in BO numbers these days .. Other big/similar film releases near it? film draught/saturation in release window? busy/slow time of year for GA/moviegoers? etc.

‘Venom’ Tops Disc Sales for Third Week – Media Play News

A pair of new releases debuted in the top five on the national home video sales charts the week ended Jan. 5, but neither could displace Sony Pictures’ Venom from taking the top spot for a third consecutive week.

The closest was Universal Pictures’ Night School, which landed at No. 2 on both the NPD VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart in its first week on shelves.

Night School, a comedy starring Kevin Hart and Tiffandy Haddish, sold 65% as many copies as Venom overall, but just 52% as many Blu-ray Discs. Half of first-week Night School sales came from the HD format, compared with 62% from the third week of Venom.

The other newcomer to secure a high chart debut was 20th Century Fox’s noirish thriller Bad Times at the El Royale, which bowed at No. 5 overall and No. 3 on the Blu-ray chart. Blu-ray accounted for 70% of the titles total unit sales.

No. 3 on the overall chart and No. 5 on the Blu-ray chart was Universal’s The House With a Clock in Its Walls, also in its third week.

Another movie in its third week in stores, 20th Century Fox’s The Predator, slipped to No. 4 on both charts.

On the Media Play News rental chart for the week ended Jan. 6, Night School held onto the top spot for a second consecutive week (it had been available through rental outlets such as Redbox for a few days prior to its sellthrough date).

Venom held onto the No. 2 rental spot, while The House With a Clock in its Walls moved up to No. 3.

Sony Pictures’ The Equalizer 2 held steady at No. 4, while The Predator slipped to No. 5.
