Who should challenge Trump in 2020? - Part 1

He wouldn't have a chance with moderates. He'd be popular with the Sanders/Warren types though, but they're not enough to win an election.

I actually reckon he would be the opposite. The moderates would like him because he’s pro business but not regressive but the sanders and warren types wouldn’t like him at all because he’s a 1% as the head of Starbucks

Dude, Schultz is pretty much in-line with all the California uber-progressive stuff on the social side of things. He's "pro business", sure, but he's going to have to carve that demo up with Trump and the Trumpies, he's not pulling that group all on his own. You're right that economically he's fine though.

He seems a decent enough speaker in interviews too, so there's that going for him. Comes off as actually believing the **** he pushes, so doesn't suffer the immediate "we can tell she's a phoney" thing Hillary had.

He'll struggle with the whole elitism perception just the same though. And frankly I don't think he'll even run - it'd be good if he does though, he's better than most of the rumored potential candidates so far at least.

Based on how democrats are reacting to everything, I'm pretty much convinced the democrats are going to run a far-left individual in 2020.

That's a shame and independents in center left or center right (or both) will decide the 2020 election.

Who might that be?

I really can't imagine Trump being reelected. I think you will see record turnout. Not just minorities who want to get his racist ass out of office (including hundreds of thousands Puerto Ricans who have moved to Florida), but millions of sane, apolitical and cynical people who usually sit out elections will vote just for a return to normalcy.

Unless the Democrats run a communist or possibly Hillary Clinton, they should be able to win.

And that's assuming the economy won't slump, which it probably will. And assuming he doesn't start a nuclear war or get the country put under international sanctions, neither of which I am ready to rule out.

I think most of the apolitical and cynical people consider Trump to be acting pretty much like a typical politician or if he's not that's OK, they don't venerate norms and precedent and don't mind if they are broken.

The people that voted him in will come out in droves to do it again or someone he supports if he don't run again, so resting on your laurels won't do this time.

A mistrust of elites and political norms is one of the hallmarks of fascism by the way. Our international agreements and institutions have stopped a world war from breaking out for the past 70 years.. but yeah... who cares about all that... let's just hand over the keys to our nuclear arsenal to this old man who's never been a statesman and who doesn't care about history. What could go wrong?

That American-lead NATO has had good effects doesn't mean we should never ever push the allies to contribute more financially to military defense or never ever disagree with those allies about trade rules, I hope you don't consider either of those positions to mean being for fascism or armageddon.

The idea that we should Abolish ICE already seems pretty prominent if not required among the Left yet alienatingly extreme to the center, the next nominee may face a pretty difficult balancing act on that.

I don't think any liberals are calling for abolishing ICE. It certainly isn't "required." We just want them to do their job with decency... that doesn't mean we're calling for a close of our immigration force.

Actually, it is kind of gaining traction. Kamala Harris has kind of jumped on the band wagon.

It's obviously not just NATO. But yes, our president has:

Alienated our allies in NATO and asked them to contribute more
Alienated our allies in the UN and pulled out of the Human Rights Council
Reneged on our binding agreement in the Paris Accord.
Broken the most binding agreement against our biggest international foe in decades.
Criticized the WTO and our previously agreed to trade agreements.
And more I'm sure.

And of course it doesn't mean that we can't renegotiate with our friends. That's not the point. Undermining these international agreements and institutions is risky though..to say the least. Is Trump's goal to strengthen NATO and the UN... cause it doesn't really seem like it does it? To listen to him, we are being taken advantage by these groups. He paints them more as our foes than our allies. That's destabilizing and could be bad for the future. Maybe moreso than you think.

To be fair though, they said he would win last time and unfortunately we know how that turned out

Interesting idea

No to Warren or Biden. Cheetoh would love to mock those two constantly. It has to be someone who is relatively new to the scene.

Imagine if another celebrity runs for office? I mean Trump before becoming president was basically a celeb in the public eye so best thing to do would be to have another celebrity run against him in 2020 but who would it be?

I actually want to see a woman in office...a female president for once I mean could you imagine the United States being ran by a woman? I know I could definitely see it happening but if she became Madame President then I wonder what that would make her husband? Would it make the First Man or something?

In that case with a female president this country won't get any worse but at least with a female in charge the country of the USA can finally turn around in a positive manner. I only say that because well I am Canadian but I have a lot of American friends and my family I have relatives who live in the States and they tell me just how bad it is over there especially with Trump as president.

Who should challenge Trump in 2020? The American people should. It's time to get routy folks.

Oprah was probably the closest to that happening again. I know Kanye wants to run in the future, but he has problems.

If Kanye is serious about running for office then I wonder what that would mean for his rap career? Kanye would pretty much have to retire from music altogether to go into politics \

Why not Oprah Winfrey? Oprah is just as rich as Trump is and just as much qualifications as Trump when Trump was elected so why not Oprah? At least she wouldn't turn America into a ****hole that's for sure

No thank you. I want an experienced, intelligent, deliberative, patient statesman or stateswoman. If Americans can't handle the boredom of politics... then they should be the ones to change. This isn't a TV show; it's real life. Obviously some of us no longer have the ability to tell the difference.
