Wonder Woman Thread Reborn! - - - - - - - - Part 17

Racism and sexism is not in everything. I don't agree with that line of thought. Not everything a white person does is to the detriment of minorities

I didn't single out White people. I said racism and sexism are present in everything. If you want to make that a guilt trip about White people, then such is your prerogative. Although White people in America are the only ones with the power to carry out institutional level racism, ideological racism is capable of being perpetrated by any individual in this country. And pointing out that racism and sexism permeates American culture is not to suggest that every single last person is malicious or that every White person is inherently "evil." Intentionally being evil is a choice.

Being sexist and/or racist is not always an immediate or recognizable choice because we as a society are indoctrinated and acculturated to think a particular way that perpetuates both systems. There is an abundance of literature/scholarship on the subject which proves the point. But don't conflate simple black and white ethics/morality with a far broader social issue. Not everything fits into a nice neat packageof good and evil.

The bold part is very important. Certain things are ingrained into society and we don't realize they're racist/sexist until we actually think about them. Some things that are detrimental to certain groups are so ingrained that they're considered "normal" and anyone who dares to suggest that the system fosters these things is met with skepticism. "If we do something every day, how can it be wrong?"

I find both of those designs to be far more conscious of taking an active step to not trivialize Wonder Woman's legacy as a feminist icon by reducing her to an action-swim-suit model. On that note, I feel that every one in this thread should read up on the "Chainmail Bikini" trope

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ChainmailBikini

It adequately describes the issue with female costumes and armor in fantasy and speculative fiction.

Your posts are lovely. Thanks for being so sensitive about these things and posting something other than the swimsuit.:yay:

Thanks for the reading material as well.

It truly is my pleasure. I have remained silent for far too long when it comes to discrimination and objectification of any sort. It is not enough to be a good person when it comes to how we conduct ourselves. There is an obligation to stand up for any person being treated poorly. And you are welcome for the reading material. I love TV Tropes: it is the Wikipedia of pop culture.

You know, we're all guilty of that. Sometimes I stay silent too because it's easier. Sometimes I just don't feel like standing up for something. I'm trying to get out of that habit though.

I also wonder if someone should start a thread for stuff like this to be discussed, so people won't get mad and try to get us to stop talking about it.

Magic Please!

Why not have the same situation where aliens (Kryptonians) impact the "real world", just replace that with magic. I mean we all think magic isn't real. Performers so called magic is just illusions.

Marvel already missed their opportunity of introducing magic in Thor, so why not introduce magic with Wonder Woman? I mean how else would you explain someone who looks physically less impressive than Superman go toe to toe with him? Well you can't, its magic. Just let go of that "grounded in realism" crap! Superman's already an impossible being.

It's good to know I am not alone with this opinion!:yay:

I wonder if Meghan Ory was ever considered for the role. Apart from height she has all the attributes to make a great Wonder Woman.

I really disliked this costume at the time, because I was looking for a superhero costume. I think the issue is, to update Wonder Woman, you kinda have to skip the superhero thing. She's truly a modern fantasy character, like a cooler Percy Jackson, or a stronger Buffy Summers. This current run is very much in that vein with modernized gods, which is something she's been doing since the 80's. I think her costume being informed by that more than 1960s war propaganda is a smart move overall. I'd like to see them expand on that, either in a TV show or film or what have you.

I think there are female characters that should dress in very clearly sexual ways. I think She-Hulk is about that. I think Black Canary baring her legs make sense for the way she is. I don't think Diana is about that kind of revealing sexuality. She's not an asexual character by any means, but that can't realistically be the terms that she, or her people, think of themselves in.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned before...and I know it's already too late but if the lady slated to be WW doesn't work, then the obvious choice to play her is...

Taylor Cole

Not only does she have the looks, she's got the acting ability and she was almost an olympic representative in volleyball. So she's got the athletic gene.

How they missed her is a mystery.

I just watched a documentary on Netflix called Wonder Women about superheroines, and it really reinforced why Wonder Woman is one of the most important superheroes ever created. It's a shame that she's been absent from television and film for so long. The documentary was fantastic and I highly recommend it.

Can we stop talking about the should've, could've, would'ves? We have Gal and honestly I don't get the hype with Cole she's cute but no WW IMO.

It's almost like people want her to fail - or at least expecting her to.

Lovely.

*I* don't want her to fail but, she doesn't inspire confidence.

She is such an unknown it really can go either way. I just pray that she is good enough because this is really a make it or break it moment for Wonder Woman and WB will only blame her and the audience if she doesn't resonate with us.

Not just for Wonder Woman, IMO but perhaps the DCCU in general.

So they're making Shazam and Metal Men movies before WW. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with WB making those movies. But before WW, really? As Rodney Dangerfield would say, "I get no respect, no respect at all."

It's truely shocking. Shazam before WW shocking.

As upsetting as this is, I highly doubt most of the movies they have in development will ever make it to screen. With Shazam back on the table, the Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam rumors may have some substance. His name may get the movie made. But Metal Men? I just don't see it.
