You get that this is meaningless and out of context, right? Superman being in a a fight so that he's thrown through a building against his will isn't saying anything about his choices or ability to comfort. The
All-Star scene is sweet but also hollow. As Lady Gaga sang in her award nominated song,
"Till It Happens To You"
You tell me it gets better, it gets better in time
You say I'll pull myself together, pull it together, you'll be fine
Tell me, what the hell do you know? What do you know?
Tell me how the hell could you know? How could you know?
Till it happens to you, you don't know how it feels, how it feels
Till it happens to you, you won't know, it won't be real
No, it won't be real, won't know how it feels
You tell me hold your head up, hold your head up and be strong
'Cause when you fall you gotta get up, you gotta get up and move on
Tell me how the hell could you talk, how could you talk?
'Cause until you walk where I walk, this is no joke
Till it happens to you, you don't know how it feels, how it feels
Till it happens to you, you won't know, it won't be real
(how could you know?)
No it won't be real
(how could you know?)
Won't know how I feel
Just telling a suicidal person that they're strong or it gets better are useless platitudes to those really hurting. Batman in BvS is struggling. He wants to kills Superman and has been manipulated by Lex. Instead of killing him like Lex wants and to protect his mother, Superman apologies to him and shows that he has faith in Batman to help him. He believes in him as a hero by trying to talk to him first. The movie ends with Batman moved by Superman. He has hope and sense of self again. We also see Superman struggle with existential issues himself and come out of it. He knows how it feels, and I've read countless posts on social media about who Cavil's Superman resonate s with htem as outsiders or as depression sufferers. The
All-Star image has power as an idea or as an icon of sorts, but it's not the only way or even the best way to explore these types of things.
