I think it'll be nice/interesting if they were to cast an actor of African decent in the title role. It's been a long time coming since superhero films has had an AA villian (Micheal Clarke Duncan in Daredevil). It's time that studios started thinking outside of the box and bring some new talent into the fold...and that way the subject of "whitewashing" won't be brought up & not to mention what that could possibly due for that actors career...thing is do they want a fresh faced or someone seasoned that can be menacing enough to feel like a threat??

I think it's only right to cast an African actor as an distinctively African character.

You're wrong as casting a white man as Apocalypse is whitewashing.

The only even remotely white guy I'd cast is Vin Diesel, even then I don't consider him white.

Some people will call it whitewashing if it happens. I don't see it since he's blue anyways.

Casting a white guy as Apocalypse feels kinda like casting a white guy as tombstone, which I always saw as black especially after SM:TAS.

En Sabah Nur is Arabian, not white or black.
And Pedder looked like that, like young En Sabah Nur in comic.
Apocalypse is modificated En Sabah Nur.

Arabian is not a race it's a culture. Which could be white, black or Asian, Asians did come to ancient Egypt. So they could choose any race they want in theory while remaining somewhat historically accurate.

Apocalypse is actually from Jordan so he would be an Arab, its just because of his links to Egypt that people think he is Egyptian.

What is Jordan today didn't exist and was apart of the Egyptian empire. Which extended from modern day Egypt to Jordan, Israel, and Syria. So yes he's egyptian even if his place of birth is morden day Jordan.

if you want a grey Apocalypse, all you need is some make up?

Now remember that Apocalypse used to switch bodies, so he could keep on surviving... So with that excuse, he could surely be living on Haybert´s body... no matter his skin color...

Actually the Arab's didn't quite reach Mesopotamia until 600-700 AD

Actually Arab did eventually become a sub-race, stemming from Semitic roots, similar to how Persian is a sub-race from Aryan roots. "White" "Black" and "Asian" however are not races.

Actually this is false. As stated above, the Arabs didn't quite occupy the land until thousands of years later.

He might have been Egyptian.

Assuming this film is even going to use proper historical continuity, the Pyramids were opened in 2540 BCE - to give you an idea, this predates Babylon.

Could've have been Hittite, that's off by about a thousand years or Hattian - off by a mere hundred years. The Akkadian Empire also did not reach Jordan until a few hundred years later.

If he was born in Jordan, and NOT by a nomadic group, he'd most likely have been born in Ebla or Jericho, and either way, they were both Semitic settlements. Jericho would make the most sense as it was the first human settlement in history, so it makes sense for the first mutant to sprout from there. Argument to support Ebla would be that it had a monarch force that stood its defence to Egypt (under King Iksud). Perhaps Apocalypse took over somehow and infiltrated the ranks in Egypt?

If they go with him being born in Egypt, than he would be Egyptian by race. Egyptians and Semites (whether from Jericho or Ebla) are very different races. Semites tend to have wavy/curly hair (dark brown to black), bigger noses and lighter skin (but still tanned/dark), Egyptians were much darker (still not as dark as most African tribes), straight (black) hair and had flatter facial features.

Realistically, he'd have been Semitic or Egyptian and neither of those is "white" or "black". Also, I'd like to add, it's near impossible to find someone who is traditional Semitic or Egyptian. :p

Best bet is to cast someone vaguely middle-eastern and get it over with.

Race is unique to the last 300 years or so. Up till that time distinctions between people was made by their place of origin. The invention of race was created by white Caucasians to justify slavery. So someone dug deep into history to create that justification. One of them being was creating this "concept" of Aryans. There is even this fictional history of Aryans coming from one of the many islands in Atlantis.

As i've stated race is unique to relatively recent times. White, black, Asian are the races designations on the Us Census. So black, white, and Asian is for sure a race.

Apocalpyse origins as stated by Marvel has his place of birth as Akkaba. Aquaba which I believe is its modern equivalent is a coastal city on the Red Sea belonging to Jordan. That city at one time was part of the Egyptian Empire. What year it became part of that empire I didn't bother to look.

They give some mistakes in those movies like 'Russia' in First Class, when it should be 'CCCP'.

I love this nerdy dicussion on Apoc's origins and ethnicity!

Uber geeky but great to read :highfive:

Race is not a modern phenomenon. It's a biological distinction of traits inherent in a group of peoples from a common place of origin. Eventually it became so mishmashed and mixed that by the times the Europeans began using it for distinction it started losing all validity. You've provided two thesis studies and the US census report. US census is not an authority on what is a race.

My point was simply that arguing over it is ridiculous because as any anthropologist will tell you, it's too complex to simplify by just saying "he's arab" "he's egyptian" etc etc.

He sure as hell wouldn't have been black or white, regardless of if he was a form of semitic or egyptian.

Why couldn't he have been black again? Egypt isn't some island Contentinent like Australia. Where the journey would be too harsh and even that didn't stop people from migrating one place to the next in search of a better life. Certain cultures grew up in isolation Egypt is not one of those cultures. It was a Mecca of civilization that drew people from all over. Including what we call Arabs and black empires like Kush. There is also evidence of egyptian settlements as early as 8000bc along the now Sudan border when the area was more of a paradise instead of the Desert it is today. Which gives rise to a theory that Egyptians didn't build the pyramids because building them in desert seems extremely unlikely.
