DoFP did Quicksilver first actually lol. And it was much better.

I agree in that regard they are always late to the party but when they do it they do a wonderful job. I think it's more that Fox are scared to risk it so they wait to see it done and the audience will eat it up. But like we've said they took the risk with Deadpool and it paid off for them in a big way. Fox can still surprise us from time to time. Sometimes they do one thing and jump in front of the pack. Let's not forget Fox did X-Men before anyone else was touching comic book movies. But I agree with your post.

I'm all for a retelling of the Phoenix saga. This May it will mark 10 yrs since X3 so I think it's time. How many times has the Joker, Catwoman, Lex Luthor, etc stories been retold? If they can do so can the story of Jean/Phoenix. Instead of Phoenix being another persons in Jean we can see her powers evolve to that of an goddess. They can toy with the idea that Jean's new found power is slowly corrupting her, and she has no boundaries pretty much becoming reckless in combat or in Danger Room sessions. This can cause alarm for Prof X and Scott who talk about putting mental blocks in her head to control her massive head, but Xavier is apprehensive cause he still remembers what lead to her death in the OT.

Far as villains is concerned they can introduce Mr. Sinister and his mauraders pretty much taking the place of the Hellfire Club. He mind wipes/brainwashes Jean into becoming Dark Phoenix just like he did with Angel in the W&X-men cartoon, however she goes mad from feeling like people want to control and use her power. Far as the death part we don't need to see her die, there should be a scene where after the X-Men fight her Scott is the one to give the "killing" blow (like in the TAS) however her powers are so advance that the true Jean surfaces pleading for Scott to save her. From here idk should there be another psychic mind fight w/her and Charles?

We wanted magic/supernatural - but Doctor Strange is doing it first.

but did the audience really? Magic has never been a strong feature of the core X-men mythos outside of Magik and she is inherently tied to New Mutants, which is what people wanted. Even then that spinoff isnt about magic based stories, not like with Dr. Strange who revolves around that. I dont think there's been much clamoring for a film revolving around magic. Ive seen plenty of classic stories involving the other stuff you mention but magic? That would rank far on the bottom of the totem pole

Ha! I read that spoiler too. Wanda being Inhuman is the ultimate confirmation for those AvX crossover rumors out there.

Fox needs to introduce their Wanda.

With that said, the first two Singer movies, all of the Wolverine movies, and Deadpool were "ground level." I see the appeal, but in terms of escalation, it is about seeing something different.

Having the X-Men fight Sinister and a group of mutants in the sewers right after they fought Apocalypse in Egypt feels underwhelming. I think a back-to-basics approach like that will eventually be needed. But not until we do something crazily different for a movie or two.

Wouldn't Proteus and his reality warping abilities suffice then. Sounds pretty different to me.

Actually yes. I just like the idea of a non-mutant threat, and something cosmic could really shake things up. Eventually, the series has to get back to its classic M.O., but a few films off would be nice. With that said, Proteus would be very different from Apocalypse and the Four Horsemen. However, I think how far Doctor Strange goes with these ideas will be important as well.

Dark phoenix is a cosmic threat, much bigger than apocalypse so it makes sense they want to go bigger, but I hope they do make a smaller in scale x film after phoenix. And correct me if I'm wrong but didn't marvel say everything was science in mcu and no magic?

I just am not sure that they are holding back anymore. Time travel and the Sentinels felt pretty out there comic book-y stuff in DoFP... which did the whole 'evil robot army thing" way better than AoU. Apocalypse is getting to the ancient ultimate big bad who happens to be blue thing before DC or Marvel get to Darkseid and Thanos, respectively. Deadpool also got to the first mainstream R-rated superhero movie (as well as mainstream, self-aware superhero movie) first.

I honestly think Fox turned a corner in 2014 and are very much competing with at least WB (Marvel is in a class of its own in terms of box office, quality is more debatable). If Apocalypse is at least good, I hope people start seeing that.

I assume if it is two parts that the first film will be about the crystal or some cosmic threat where the team works together splendidly. I also would think they'd have to do it differently than the X2 cliffhanger. Something along the lines of Jean going Phoenix halfway through but it being a complete adventure with a beginning, middle and end like all the X-Men movies. The one after that would be where things go "dark."

I also doubt they will kill Jean off again. Like the cartoon, there are workarounds, and they need to differentiate it as something more grand and unique from what the old movies did twice.

Its not like the next film will come out next year. It wont be till 2018 or 2019 and as you mention we'll have other stuff in the mean time.. If they wait 2 years to start it, we may not get a new Xmen film till 2020 and IMO, thats too far out. There is momentum thats built and you can kill or derail it if you wait too long.

And besides Apocalypse will be the first movie since X3 in 2006 that will feature a team of X-men. Its been FAR too long since we've had that. DOFP did to a small extent but the future stuff was underutilized and not the focus of the film. It'll be good to have a team of X-men assembled again and we dont need a break from that

At the end of the day, after we see this movie we will know where the franchise stands and have a better idea of where it is headed (i.e. they will probably hint at it in the mid and/or post-credits). Either way, those spiffy new costumes they are getting are not just meant to be closure. They are a promise for more to come.

Phoenix arc is a two part thing. It begins with the Phoenix Saga and ends with the Dark Phoenix Saga. If and when they adapt Phoenix into the films, it should not be crammed into one film. You have to do one with her rising as Phoenix and the second is about her downfall as DP. It wouldnt be a 4 hour movie broken up into 2 parts, but it would be a saga told with 2 distinct Acts which are standalone. It wouldnt end on a cliffhanger as the first should conclude and with jump in time when they get to the DPS
