In addition to my above post on how X-Men: Apocalypse hurt Dark Phoenix, the reason Dark Phoenix works as a story is because of the attachment the audience has built with Jean, Scott, etc. We've been reading their exploits for years and we desperately want to see them save Jean from this dark force within her. But, X-Men: Apocalypse opted to not serve the young X-Men they introduce. Therefore, they're underdeveloped. Why do I care about Jean going all Dark Phoenix if I never cared about this version of Jean Grey, Scott Summers, etc in the first place? The Dark Phoenix in X3 at least had the OT cast and 2 prior movies going for it, so people cared more going in. Here, they just expect the name Dark Phoenix and Jean Grey and such to mean something, when the fundamental core of the story requires a level of character loyalty they haven't earned yet.

It was a mistake to use this storyline at this point in the franchise. It feels like old hat and recycled use of idea mixed with apathy towards these characters. This was doomed from the start. They needed an entirely new idea for a 90s X-Men film.

You nailed it, Spider-Fan. In the new franchise, we have links to Hank and Raven, Charles and Erik. Throw in Quicksilver.

For two "core" characters in Scott and Jean, they're just thrown at a wall with a bunch of other parts and expected to stick. Are they even a thing? Where's Logan in all this (I know the answer but he's a big part, and at least TLS paid homage to Logan/Jean's sacrifice).

What I look forward to with MCU X-men is a slow build, watching them grow and learning to love these characters. And when the story leads us to serious consequences, we will (hopefully) care. IW/Endgame had consequences and I can't speak for anyone else, but I certainly cared.

Also, we can hopefully just give the 90s thing a rest and start with young X-men in whatever timeframe the MCU will be in at that point.

You know what, just out of spite for there being a poll while the tomato meter is active and anyone voting can just be right by default now, I am voting Certified Fresh :o

It may challenge Blade: Trinity yet! :wow:

It really isn’t a 20% or under worthy movie it’s just overall whatever. What I saw was way better compared to Apocalypse. I hope this ends at least in the 30% range.

That’s all rooted in Kinberg who has been quoted as saying he can’t imagine doing one of these FC movies without the ‘FC trio.’

Obviously I haven't seen the film yet - but if I have to sit through another movie of Magento and Mystique "am I or am I not a villain" plotlines...

They really ran out of anything to do with these characters after DOFP.

It would have been so good to mix things up and do an Apocalypse/Dark Phoenix trilogy with Xavier, Jean, Scott and Storm as the main characters.

Cest la vie...

I brought this up before and they are right. Dark PhoeniX is going to taint the legacy of the X-Men franchise. Look what Spider-Man 3 did to the Raimi films. Just really terrible for foX to hand the franchise to someone like Simon Kinberg who is already a mediocre writer to begin with. And its one thing to underperform at the boX office but to have the final film so bad in a 20 year old franchise that managed to recover and survive this long, is just a shot through the heart.

The film is back to 22%. So far it has less than 160 reviews, so there might be a hundred more before it stabilizes.

But its definitely not topping Blade Trinity's 25% at this rate.

I ain't being funny but Avengers Endgame just came out.

A film like this just cant live up to that. Audiences ain't interested in "poor mans" versions anymore.

I agree. Endgame was a juggernaut. I don't think it was a good idea to release a poor ensemble type of CBM like Dark Phoenix that close after EG.

Such a bad move. They should have either got in ahead or released a lot later. Otherwise it’s the cruelest comparison of how to end a long running set of films.

It was supposed to be released last year, but Kinberg screwed up and they had to spend several months patching up the film with reshoots.

Down again to 21%. Watch out Ghost Rider spirit of Vengeance!
