86th Annual Academy Awards (2014) - Part 2

Poor Leo. I was rooting for him, but oh well.

Then again... the fact that Gary Oldman, Michelle Pfeiffer and Johnny Depp don't have an Oscar, means Leo should sleep quite soundly.

Leo has been nominated more than most actors I think. I just hope he doesn't change what he's doing

Saying that Matt & Jared won because of the roles they played is kind of misguided. It sure didn't hurt in the grand scheme of things, but come on, Chiwetel plays a guy who is turned into a slave, Leo a master manipulator & degenerate, etc, etc, because these are the roles that are literally Oscar worthy, that"s what it takes.

Now, saying one performance is better than another when you got Leo, Chiwetel, Dern & Matt & Christian all doing fantastic work, it's silly. However, I doubt that Matt gets the Oscar solely for DBC, it's a culmination of his incredible comeback + True Detective probably helped him to win as well, it's not like it's a surprise or anything, he got ALL the awards that mattered prior to the Oscars (aside from BAFTAS where he wasn't nominated for some reason).

Matt was incredible, but I think what's being judged as well are the roles, how can you say OBJECTIVELY that one guy was better than the other when they don't even play the same roles, or one might have a showier role than the other.

Matt won, it's completely deserved & legitimate, end of story.

What's with all this ''playing it safe'' crap?

Ellen did a great job. Not every award ceremony has to be crass or like Ricky Gervais insulting everyone in the room.

The pizzas and selfie was brilliant.

This. The Oscars needs to be kept clean and classy. Most comedians today don't know how to be funny without being crass. I think Gervais is funny , but his type of humor wouldn't work for the ceremony either.

I'd still like to see Chris Rock host again.

very happy for McConaughey and especially Cate Blanchett. :hrt:

Anywhere I can go to catch the highlights without sorting through hundreds of youtube vids?

Didn't you know? "Playing it safe" is the next internet phrase that's going around that people like to throw out there for just about everything. First it was Marvel Studio films, now it's the Oscars. :whatever:

I take it this is directed at me as I am the one who brought up that point. I understand every point you have brought up and considered it in the formation of my opinion. That being said, I still feel that way. I too think the awards were deserved but I still feel that they weren't won by the quality of the performance.

Having seen Dallas Buyers Club, yes they most certainly were earned. McConcaughey and Leto's performances were extraordinary in that movie. I kind of think that in many other years, Leo might have had a really good shot at winning. It's just that this year was SO STACKED, and had SO MANY deserving candidates that it simply wasn't his year. That's true for most of the categories, they're were a lot of worthy candidates this year. ALL of the best actor nominees have award-worthy performances, but only one could win.

I know it's early, but who do you see getting BP nominations next year?

I feel McConaughey was more deserving than Leto. McConaughey was excellent, but Leto's part was pretty insubstantial compared to some of the other Supporting Actor nominees, I felt. He was fine, but didn't particularly stand out in the film to me more than Jennifer Garner did. It was McConaughey's film.

If Leo wants to win an Oscar so badly, he should think about writing something too.

Hard to say since a lot of movies haven't come out yet. If they're really good, I can see Interstellar (which also star McConaughey) and Transcendence potentially getting nominated. If it's REALLY good, then maybe Nolan will FINALLY get a Best Director nomination. If it's half as good as the first one, then How To Train Your Dragon 2 probably has a good shot at a Best Animated Picture nomination. Gone Girl (the new David Fincher movie) also might have a shot. Of course, all of this is predicated on these movie being good, which we don't know is the case or not yet.

I found this one of the more enjoyable Oscar ceremonies, Ellen was a lighthearted and laid back host, and since I didn't think any of the movies themselves this year were all that special I had no real vested interest in who won. I actually agreed with all of the winners bar best actress, but in most categotries I felt there was more than 1 good choice bar best picture.

I'd love to see less "Based on real events" movies in awards contention next year.

I thought Margot Robbie was unlucky not to get a nom, I liked her the best of the performances in the film. Leo was entertaining as he chewed the scenery with a bunch of shouty Al Pacino-esque speeches, but it was never gonna be his year against the more subtle performances of McConaughey and Ejiofor, who portrayed more emotionally engaging people.
