86th Annual Academy Awards (2014) - Part 2

Poor Leo. I was rooting for him, but oh well.

Then again... the fact that Gary Oldman, Michelle Pfeiffer and Johnny Depp don't have an Oscar, means Leo should sleep quite soundly.

Depp hasn't done award worthy work in pretty much 11 years.

Oldman and Depp don't have Oscars yet??!!

I thought Margot Robbie was unlucky not to get a nom, I liked her the best of the performances in the film. Leo was entertaining as he chewed the scenery with a bunch of shouty Al Pacino-esque speeches, but it was never gonna be his year against the more subtle performances of McConaughey and Ejiofor, who portrayed more emotionally engaging people.

This entirely. DiCaprio was good, but it was not his best, much less the best performance of the year.

Well Leo is rumored to be doing a film with David O. Russell. It's kind of a perfect match. :p

He did do a film with Eastwood. It sucked.

And Wolf of Wall Street was independently financed. It was damn near NC-17 and hardly the kind of film a studio was ever going to sign off on, which they didn't.

Smaller budget films...Wolf of Wall Street had a budget of $100 million.

I am talking smaller budgets. You look at all these nominees they are all in smaller budget films

Nebraska, August Osage County, Her, etc...

I also want to see Leo in a Cohen's Bros film.

Leonardo will need to do a independent type film rather then these high profile films to get the oscar.

He needs cut his **** with Scorsese everytime and start working with Paul Thomas Anderson, Clint Eastwood, or find unique projects like MM did with Dallas Buyers Club.

Wolf of Wall Street is a great film, but its very Scorcese and we have seen that over the top stuff with Goodfellas and Casino.

Broaden the projects Leo.

I'm very happy to see Leonardo DiCaprio and Scorsese continue working together, as they bring good stuff out of one another. I for one do think The Wolf of Wall Street is career-best work for him. And DiCaprio has been fortunate to work with some great heavy-hitter directors: Tarantino, Spielberg, Eastwood, Nolan. But I definitely would be interested in seeing him do something with a more offbeat director, like David O. Russell as someone mentioned, or the Coens. His Jordan Belfort has me keen to see Leo continue to steer away from serious, brooding types and go more left-field into unusual territory.

Also, lets not feel bad for Leo...We all know at the end of his career if he still has not won a oscar he will get a honorary oscar. Just like Peter O'Toole did.

Travesty he never won it for Lawrence of Arabia.

I've seen some debate over Leo getting passed over for the Oscar this year.

IMO, I feel Leo does far too many roles in hopes of nabbing an Oscar instead of interesting projects. In general, his movies always come out during the Oscar season and he's more often than not in a Scorcese film.

Leo is an actor I've really come around on over the years. I personally would like to see him take on some roles outside the norm. Take part in a summer blockbuster (Not as serious or heavy as Inception) or partake in a comedy.

He will get his Oscar. If anything, it will take the pressure off and there will be less gossip during the Awards season. Either that or he will get Al Pacino'd and be given one based solely on the body of his work during a year when others truly deserved it

As an aside, I also really want to see Christian Bale in a Coen Brothers film. I think having him play one of their trademark straght-faced imbeciles would be a revelation! :woot:

Well, he was in Gatsby.

To be honest, I feel the pressure on Leo to get an Oscar is more external than coming from Leonardo DiCaprio himself. The fans and pundits go on and on about him getting snubbed, and make all these gifs about it, but Leo himself has always said that his priority is just doing movies that interest him. As I've said, The Wolf of Wall Street is most certainly NOT an Oscar-friendly role, or performance. That to me felt like Leo just cutting loose without any thought to expectation. And if you want him to partake in a comedy, The Wolf of Wall Street has him doing broad slapstick. And some of his most interesting stuff - like Shutter Island - has fallen well outside of prime Oscar season.

I wanna see Leo in a role that would normally go to somebody like Depp. I wanna see Leo try to be all weird and zany. It really is time for him to step out of his comfort zone. Which we did see a bit in Django and Wolf but I just really wanna see him doing something really different. He has the chops to pull of practically anything

I feel McConaughey was more deserving than Leto. McConaughey was excellent, but Leto's part was pretty insubstantial compared to some of the other Supporting Actor nominees, I felt. He was fine, but didn't particularly stand out in the film to me more than Jennifer Garner did. It was McConaughey's film.

Tell that to Judi Dench, who won her Oscar for an 8 minute long role, or Beatrice Straight, who won her's for a 6 minute long role. The size of the role is obviously not something the voters look at in the supporting categories.

Leo better get the pirate outfit ready.........:o

I was thinking more along the lines of a type writer and a suitcase full of hallucinogens ;)

I meant less in terms of screentime than in terms of screen presence.

Depp hasn't done award worthy work in pretty much 11 years.

He should have been nominated much more frequently than he was though.

I would have given him nods for:

- Edward Scissorhands
- Benny and Joon
- Ed Wood
- Dead Man
- The Libertine

Leo still has decades and decades left to go.

Seriously, people are talking like Leo's going to be dead in 5 years. The guy is barely 40. If Bruce Dern can still get a nomination, I wouldn't worry about poor old Leo and his perfect hair and millions of dollars and supermodel girlfriends.

Leo and Amy Adams will get their Oscars sooner or later. Both have years to go. It's not the Olympics where you have a limited shelf life to achieve greatness. With the Oscars, you can achieve greatness well into your 80's as we saw with Christopher Plummer a few years ago.

I can't believe how many people misunderstood McConaghey's speech

I did find all of the Leo gifs funny though.
