86th Annual Academy Awards (2014) - Part 2

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or not but I do agree

Ellen was....OK.I mean it was some pretty corny stuff, but she was earnest. It wasn't like she fell on her face or anything.

I'd love to see Jim Carrey host one year.:awesome:

My favorite moment was Bill Murray's shout out for the late great Harold Ramis.:csad:

Nope, I actually changed my mind, you're probably right.

I understand if you're not used to reading those words on the hype, and that you find yourself totally confused now.

It really does confuse me. You don't hear those words in that particular order often here at all lol

I'm serious.

So why this recent trend anyway?

It wasn't the case in the years 2000-2005... Gladiator, Beautiful Mind, Lord of the Rings (ugh ...) , Departed, etc were very different.

It was a really strong year for film at the Oscars this year. So even where my top choice didn't win, I can't really begrudge the film or person that did.

I saw every Best Picture nominee except for PHILOMENA, and they were all great, with a few (12 YEARS A SLAVE, WOLF OF WALL STREET, HER) being bona-fide 5-star classics. So, I'm fine with 12 YEARS A SLAVE winning, but I think the best of the bunch was THE WOLF OF WALL STREET. That was an astounding film, one of Scorsese's best, and it's one I can see myself returning to and enjoying again and again in the years to come, one that, while divisive now, is going to enter the canon of definitive films of this decade in the future.

Best Actor was possibly the most competitive of all the categories, as every one of those performances was uniformly excellent. Again, Leonardo DiCaprio was my favourite, but I saw Chiwetel Ejiofor right up there with him among the most deserving winners. I'd also put Bruce Dern above McConaughey, but that's no slight on McConaughey, who was also great, so again, I can't begrudge his win.

A BEAUTIFUL MIND and CHICAGO were pretty woeful. I'd say this year was one of the strongest Best Picture shortlists in ages.

That poor bastard really wants an Oscar. lol

I can just imagine him now "Matthew ****ing McConaughey!!!!"

I quite liked A Beautiful Mind. It had very strong character and setting work.

I dont know. Various charitable donations and such? I mean, money is usually the motivation behind most things so I wouldn't see why it'd be different here

Money, or prestige, or just a reflection of cultural attitudes. I think we're agreeing that the current preference for best picture are movies that glorify the Hollywood Liberal consensus:
- 12 years a slave
- argo
- king's speech
- hurtlock
- slumdog millionaire
That's five movies of one kind in a span of six years. It's a significant contrast to the types of movies that won before, and the change was quite sudden in my opinion, beginning in 2008, with the possible exception of Crash.

There might be money to be made this way, but it's hard to follow.

Leo's internal monologue: "Suck it up Leo, don't let them see you cry. Yes you haven't got an Oscar, but look at all you've achieved, you've got a fantastic body of work, worked with some of the greatest directors in history, starred in the biggest..........oh **** you, **** you McConaughey, **** you to hell" :hehe:

WTF was The Artist about? I don't even remember ever hearing about it and it won in 2010 I believe. That never happens to me, where I forget about a particular movie winning BP. I've still never seen Slumdog or Argo but I've always been aware of them and I do want to see them at some point. I dunno

:lmao:

Yours was totally better than mine

Ha, wow. Is that actually from after MM took it out, or the memorium tribute or something? Jonah behind him is hilarious.

When was Crash? 2005? I thought that movie was garbage. One that won just because it was about racism.

I haven't seen 12 Years a Slave yet (I will), so I can't comment on that one. But I think it's funny that Ellen said something like this in her opening monologue "There are two possibilities for Best Picture tonight. 1- 12 Years a Slave wins. Or 2- You're all racist."
