88th Annual Academy Awards - Part 2

That's absolutely fair. I'm black and I still watched.

Did you enjoy the near constant black/white jokes and references to diversity throughout the show? Or did you think at was a little much when all was said and done?

Leo! So happy. YES!

Haha!

I think it was too much and I think it was done on purpose like that...because here in LA/Hollywood...that's all we heard all season

Why are people saying that Leo is an Oscar chaser? Is it because he chooses movies to act in that are actually good and not crappy rom com movies? I really can't see the justification for hating on a guy that likes to play serious parts instead of funny ones. Everyone has their niche.

I think he's a terrific actor and he owns the parts that he plays.

It's not matter of just not doing comedies. Some roles, like the revenant, or biopocs like j Edgar are pretty nakedly Oscar bait.

I don't think that really applies to most of his movies though. DiCaprio essentially collects directors. He has spoken about setting out at a young age with a running list of people he wanted to work with. Seeking out top tier directors leads to a lot of prestige pictures. The thing is, Leo's bankability led to him being stuck in the lead roles. Leo shines in a aller part in Django but that kind of role doesn't come around. Many of his movies only got funding because he was attached. He's not going to be in a side role. Scorsese actually spoke to this a few years ago. Along with being friends a major reason why he has worked with Leo so many times that his non Leo projects failed to garner investors.

So serious = automatically good

Funny = bad?

Funny = bad?

I didn't say that. But it's not uncommon for actors who have normally played serious roles (and good ones at that) to get flack for starring in a comedy (especially a really crappy comedy).

It just seems like people are hating on Leo for only playing serious roles. Like I said, everyone has their niche. That's why I asked why people were saying that he's an Oscar chaser. What is the reasoning behind it? I assumed it was because of the seriousness of the roles he chooses. Maybe that's not it.

Its their profession. They're not obligated to care about appeasing social justice warriors.

It's the people who are talking up a big game. Practice what you preach and show consistency. Until that day comes, they can clap all they want. The problem is these people think by clapping and giving standing ovations means they're helping. It's still not gonna make any difference. I just don't get it. You have that much money and resources you can a lot of good with it and they don't. These people are all talk. It's easier to just sit their and go along with things. At the end of the day they all went home and are doing just dandy. People want to appear they care but not many people want to take action. It's no different by liking something on facebook by showing that you care. We're a complacent species.

My God. And to think the Oscars used to be a dinner party. It has as much importance as the bus driver's and meatpacking industry awards.

Who are you speaking about specifically? I could list all the actors and actresses that have donated significant amounts of money to various charities and causes, along with starting their own, but the list would be too long.

John Williams has been nominated 50! fity!! times. More than any other soul.

I'm talking strictly in the sense of helping out minorities in Hollywood. Charities sure, there's donations all the time. But there's a real lack of these people using their standing in this industry to help people get opportunity with something to show for it.

Yea, people make fun of Redmayne for being an Oscar chaser, but Leo's been doing it just as hardcore for longer than Redmayne's even been around.
I had not herd that about Redmayne.
How did that get started?

Leo is a special talent that will always garner attention in his roles unless he slips and does something like white house down. I think his biggest non oscar bait film to date is inception

Just curious, when did everyone start hating Iñárritu so much? I don't remember this many people despising him last year.

Which, ironically, also was nominated for an Oscar, lol.

I'm wondering that myself. I'm glad he won it again.

Cant stand redmayne, comes off as phony and should be thankful hes getting work after jupiter ascending.

I started halfway through Birdman. Maybe earlier, after whatever passed for a first act of that dud.

Yeah. I wanted Miller to get it, but Innaritu would have been my second choice.

Really, the only award winners I had issues with last night were Rylance (Sly or Hardy should have gotten it) and Sam Smith (that song makes me want to gouge out my eardrums with a rusty pitchfork and deep-fry them in acid).

I forgot all about that, was it just best picture?

No, it was nominated for eight awards and it won for Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Visual Effects.

Nolan got snubbed though and didn't get a director nom.

/waits for slumcat to reappear under a new name and rant about how Nolan didn't deserve a nom even though the Oscars are bullsh** anyway and all they nominate is crap.
