All Things Superman: An Open Discussion - - Part 11

Basically the consensus is, if it takes itself too seriously, it's not really a comic book film. But if it takes itself too tongue in cheek, then it's suddenly too much like a comic book.

Yeah, people have their own idea of what comic book means when really as a medium it's as varied as anything else.

The amount of common sense displayed in the last two posts deserves to recieve applause so thunderous that buildings crumble for miles around.

If Superman throwing steels stars doesn't hurt Zod what would? What's the point of a fistfight if they can't be injured?

I'm assuming it's elemental - as in, Kryptonian elements on earth can hurt Superman, hence Zod's need for the armour.

They can hurt each other, but in terms of physical damage, I imagine it would be the same as two humans fighting. Whoever has the bigger muscles usually punches harder.

Kryptonian's can be hurt.

But only by other Kryptonians, or by something EXTREMELY powerful such as doomsday or darkseid, hen exposed to a yellow sun.

you forget magic, and their need for oxygen
not geting oxygen will not kill a Kryptonian.look at superman 2 with zod and company on the moon killing people and just hanging out up there.look at superman fighting Nuclear Man on the moon.in superman returns it look like he sleeping in space.

Eh, whatever they did in Reeve's universe may not apply now. To be honest, him just floating around in space without air looked goofy to me. I can buy that he was holding his breath in SR, but in my mind, Supes needs oxygen.

it's not just in the reeve movies it's in the comics too.on krypton they would need it because on krypton they just like humans on earth.

Superman IV is a terrible analogy for that... if we were to use Superman IV, then people can breathe in space as well.

thew comic book lists magic an breathing as part of Superman's weaknesses. before the Imperiex war, Mongul actually helped Superman learn how to hold his breath for longer periods of time so that he could stay longer in space to fight. also, right before he had his extreme power surge in the 90's, when he became a walking behemoth unable to control his powers, the very fight before all of it happened has him thinking to himself how he has to go back down for air, but suddenly the oxygen molecules in his blood increased (or something like that- been a long time since i've read that comic book)...

either way, Superman needs oxygen to breathe. Both Superman II and IV do not count mostly because of their storylines do not exist in the mainline DC universe.

I can but into him needing oxygen.I just can't buy into him dying from the lack of oxygen.

yea well i guess.

I've always wondered what relevance is magic? It's not specific at all. It's just common sense. If Samantha Stevens or Harry Potter comes along and tries to turn him into a frog, it would probably work. It's not as if an advanced molecular structure or a bio-electric aura is made to withstand something like that.

the Superman encyclopedia lists this as a weakness because even though Superman is invulnerable to many things, his invulnerability comes from natural phenomenon, not supernatural.

Which is a given because Superman's not a magical character. It's like saying gunshots are Batman's weakness.

Saw a short trailer in front of TDKR...very cool. I'm happy!

TDKR spoiler, of a sorts:

After seeing how John Blake was handled, diving more into the angst orphans can have I am officially beyond hyped for MAN OF STEEL. Smallville pulled it off perfectly how you can still be strong yet angst ridden about losing your biological parents and home planet. I have a feeling Nolan will as well after seeing TDKR. They said realistic? Well, realistic is we lost our parents, we're not 100% happy about it, but we're strong and although a curse it's also a gift because it can serve as a strength. And that's kind of what I saw from the teaser. So I am officially hyped. Nolan's got this down cold.

Just saw the teaser, it got me reinterested in this after being away from this boards for months. A couple questions

-Is the idea of Clark wearing glasses gone?
-JImmy Olsen and Lex Luthor were never cast right?
-Any vague story details?

Clark wears glasses. No word in Jimmy or Lex

Loved the teaser! The annoying people behind me kept saying it was Aquaman until the red cape.

-Clark has the glasses. They were in the Comic-Con footage.
-That we know of.
-Just that it's the origin, Zod is the villain, and they have a massive fight. He saves a schoolbus as a boy.
